The Honda F23A1 is a 2.3-liter inline-four
gasoline engine belonging to the later generation of Honda’s F-series
engine family. It was primarily used in the North American Honda Accord
from 1998 to 2002 and in several regional Honda and Acura applications.
The F23A1 was engineered to deliver excellent fuel efficiency, reliable
low-to-mid-range torque, and smooth, quiet operation suitable for
midsize family sedans.
The Honda F23A1 is a four-stroke, water-cooled inline-four gasoline
engine with a displacement of 2,253 cc (137.5 cubic inches). Bore
measures 86.0 mm (3.39 inches), and stroke measures 97.0 mm (3.82
inches), creating a decidedly long-stroke configuration optimized for
torque and efficiency. The compression ratio is approximately 9.3:1
depending on model year.
Factory-rated power output is around 150 Hp (112 kW) at 5,700 rpm, with
peak torque of 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) at 4,900 rpm. Idle speed is set
between 700 and 750 rpm. Redline is near 6,500 rpm. The firing order is
1-3-4-2.
A cast-iron block provides excellent thermal stability and wear
resistance, while the aluminum cylinder head reduces weight and improves
heat dissipation. The F23A1 uses a belt-driven SOHC valvetrain with 16
valves and Honda’s VTEC system applied only to the intake side. The cam
profile primarily improves fuel economy and low-rpm torque rather than
high-rpm performance. Internally, the engine uses a forged steel
crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and cast-aluminum pistons.
The F23A1 cylinder block is made of cast iron, chosen for its long-term
durability and mechanical stability. The long-stroke design allows
strong low-rpm torque, making the engine responsive in everyday driving.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings that distribute loads
evenly and help maintain smooth engine operation throughout the rev
range.
Oil passages are cast into the block to ensure reliable lubrication of
the crankshaft journals, connecting rod bearings, and the upper
valvetrain. The coolant passages are strategically routed to ensure
uniform cooling around all cylinders, minimizing hot spots that could
lead to pre-ignition or head gasket deterioration. Accessory mounting
bosses allow easy installation of alternators, power steering pumps, and
A/C compressors.
The aluminum cylinder head houses a SOHC valvetrain with four valves per
cylinder. Intake valves measure approximately 34-35 mm, while exhaust
valves are roughly 28-29 mm. The head design focuses on efficient
airflow and combustion stability rather than maximum top-end power.
Honda’s VTEC system on the intake camshaft changes cam lift and duration
at specific engine speeds. For the F23A1, the VTEC engagement point is
tuned to improve fuel efficiency and low-rpm torque rather than high-rpm
Hp. The head uses rocker arms and screw-and-locknut valve lash adjusters
that require periodic maintenance. The combustion chambers use a
swirl-enhanced pent-roof layout for efficient burn and good emissions
control.
Fuel delivery is managed by Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point
injection system. The system uses an in-tank electric fuel pump and a
fuel pressure regulator that maintains pressure between 300 and 350 kPa
(43-51 psi). Multi-hole solenoid injectors deliver fuel with fine
atomization for clean and efficient combustion.
Sensors supporting fuel delivery include:
- MAP sensor
- TPS
- IAT sensor
- ECT sensor
- Upstream O2 sensor
- Downstream O2 sensor
- CKP and CMP position sensors
- Knock sensor
The ECU adjusts injector pulse width, ignition timing, and VTEC
activation based on engine load and operating conditions. Recommended
fuel is regular unleaded gasoline (87 AKI / 91 RON or higher).
The lubrication system uses a full-pressure wet-sump design. A
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump maintains strong oil pressure
throughout the rpm range.
Lubrication specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.3 liters (4.5 quarts)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: 320-450 kPa (46-65 psi)
- Idle pressure: 80-120 kPa (12-17 psi)
A full-flow oil filter captures contaminants. Oil is routed to all key
components including crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft journals,
rocker arms, and valvetrain. Recommended viscosity is 5W-30 or 10W-30
depending on climate. Oil change intervals range from 8,000 to 10,000 km
(5,000-6,000 miles).
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled closed-loop design. A belt-driven
centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block, head,
radiator, and heater core.
Cooling specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 6.2-6.7 liters (6.5-7.1 quarts)
- Thermostat opening temperature: 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: approx. 88-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
Coolant passages are carefully engineered to maintain uniform
temperature throughout the engine. The radiator uses a two-row aluminum
core with electric cooling fans activated by a temperature switch.
Coolant replacement is recommended every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two
years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system consists of a composite-plastic intake manifold
tuned for daily driving performance. The throttle body is cable-operated
and sized to support good throttle response across the rpm range. The
airbox includes a resonator-equipped design that reduces induction noise
without restricting airflow.
The exhaust system uses a cast-iron manifold connected to a
close-coupled catalytic converter for improved emissions control. A
secondary catalytic converter may be present depending on vehicle model.
Upstream and downstream O2 sensors provide real-time mixture feedback
for the ECU.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition is managed through a distributor-based system with integrated
crankshaft and camshaft sensors. The internal ignition coil provides
spark energy to the distributor rotor, which distributes spark to each
cylinder.
Electrical specifications:
- Spark plug gap: 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in)
- Alternator output: approx. 80-90 amperes
- Starter output: approx. 1.0-1.2 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
The ECU manages ignition timing using data from MAP, ECT, rpm, and O2
sensors. Spark plug replacement intervals range from 30,000-40,000 km
for standard plugs to 80,000 km for platinum plugs.
Other systems integrated into the F23A1
include:
- PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)
- EVAP charcoal-canister system
- EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system for NOx reduction
- IACV (Idle Air Control Valve)
- OBD-II diagnostic system
These systems help maintain emissions compliance and ensure smooth
operation under varying conditions.
- Length: 650 mm (25.6 inches)
- Width: 600 mm (23.6 inches)
- Height: 680 mm (26.8 inches)
Dry weight ranges from approximately 145-155 kg (319-342 lb) depending
on accessory configuration.
Recommended service intervals include:
- Oil and filter: 8,000-10,000 km (5,000-6,000 miles)
- Air filter: every 20,000-30,000 km
- Spark plugs: every 30,000-40,000 km (standard) or 80,000 km (platinum)

- Various engine swap applications due to its affordability and
reliability
