The Honda F22B1 is a 2.2-liter inline-four
gasoline engine produced during the mid-1990s as part of Honda’s widely
used F-series engine family. Installed primarily in the North American
Honda Accord EX from 1994 to 1997, the F22B1 served as a higher-output
variant of the SOHC F-series lineup. The defining feature of the F22B1
is its SOHC VTEC system, which improves air-flow efficiency during
higher engine speeds while maintaining smooth, economical behavior
during low-rpm operation.
The F22B1 combines a cast-iron cylinder block with an aluminum SOHC VTEC
cylinder head, multi-point PGM-FI fuel injection, and a long-stroke
configuration that favors usable mid-range torque. Owners praise the
engine for its balance of drivability, longevity, and low maintenance
cost. Despite its VTEC system, it is tuned for moderate performance
rather than aggressive high-rpm output, making the engine ideal for
daily-driven midsize sedans.
The F22B1 is a four-stroke, water-cooled inline-four gasoline engine
with a displacement of 2,156 cc (131.6 cu in). It uses an 85.0 mm (3.35
in) bore and a long 95.0 mm (3.74 in) stroke, giving it a distinctly
torque-oriented character. The compression ratio is approximately 8.8:1
or 9.0:1 depending on year and market.
Factory output:
- Power: approx. 145 hp (108 kW) at 5,500 rpm
- Torque: approx. 201 Nm (148 lb-ft) at 4,500 rpm
- Idle speed: approx. 700-750 rpm
- Redline: approx. 6,500 rpm
The firing order is 1-3-4-2. The engine uses a belt-driven SOHC
valvetrain with Honda’s VTEC applied to the intake cam lobe. Internally,
it uses a forged steel crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and
cast-aluminum pistons with friction-reducing coatings. The engine is
designed for smooth operation, predictable torque, and reliable
performance on regular unleaded fuel.
The F22B1 uses a cast-iron cylinder block, which provides excellent
rigidity and long-term durability. The long-stroke design enhances
torque production at lower engine speeds, making the engine well-suited
for heavier sedans and automatic transmissions. The crankshaft sits on
five main bearings, ensuring stability under varying loads and
contributing to smooth engine behavior.
Internal oil passages route lubrication to the crankshaft journals,
connecting rod bearings, piston oil jets, and valvetrain. Coolant
channels inside the block ensure uniform operating temperatures,
preventing localized overheating. The block’s accessory bosses allow
easy mounting of alternators, power-steering pumps, A/C compressors, and
other components. The combination of iron block and aluminum head
delivers good balance between weight, heat management, and structural
integrity.
The aluminum SOHC VTEC cylinder head is a defining feature of the F22B1.
It contains four valves per cylinder for a total of sixteen valves.
Valve sizes generally measure approx. 34-35 mm intake and 28-29 mm
exhaust. The VTEC system engages a high-lift cam profile at moderate
engine speeds to improve intake-side breathing efficiency.
The head uses rocker arms and screw-and-locknut valve lash adjustment,
which must be inspected periodically. The combustion chambers use a
compact pent-roof shape that promotes swirl and efficient flame travel.
The intake ports are designed for mid-range torque rather than high-rpm
flow. The camshaft is driven by a timing belt, which must be replaced
every 100,000 km (60,000 miles). The head gasket uses multi-layer
sealing to maintain durability under thermal cycling.
The F22B1 uses Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point fuel injection. An
electric in-tank pump feeds the fuel rail, and a vacuum-modulated
regulator maintains fuel pressure between 300-350 kPa (43-51 psi).
Multi-hole injectors atomize fuel for efficient combustion and
responsive throttle behavior.
Fuel and ignition are controlled via the
ECU, which processes signals from:
- MAP sensor
- TPS
- IAT sensor
- ECT sensor
- Upstream oxygen sensor
- Downstream oxygen sensor
- Knock sensor
- Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors
The ECU adjusts injector pulse width, VTEC engagement, and ignition
timing. The engine is designed for use with regular unleaded gasoline
(minimum 87 AKI / 91 RON), though higher octane may improve knock
resistance.
The lubrication system uses a full-pressure wet-sump design with a
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump. The oil pump delivers stable
pressure throughout the rpm range, even under heavy load.
Key specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.0-4.3 L (4.2-4.5 qt)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: approx. 320-450 kPa (46-65 psi)
- Idle pressure: approx. 80-120 kPa (12-17 psi)
A full-flow spin-on oil filter captures contaminants. Oil circulates
through the crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft journals, rocker arms,
and valvetrain. Recommended viscosities include 5W-30 or 10W-30
depending on climate. Oil changes are performed every 8,000-10,000 km
(5,000-6,000 miles) for optimal engine health.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, closed-loop design using a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulates through the
block, head, heater core, and radiator to regulate temperature.
Cooling system data:
- Coolant capacity: 6.0-6.5 L (6.3-6.9 qt)
- Thermostat opening: 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: approx. 88-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
The radiator uses an aluminum core with electric cooling fans controlled
by a temperature switch. Coolant replacement is recommended every 40,000
km (25,000 miles) or every two years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system consists of a composite intake manifold designed
for low-to-mid-range flow and efficient swirl generation. The throttle
body is cable-operated and sized to support smooth throttle response.
The airbox incorporates a resonator to minimize intake noise.
The exhaust system uses a cast-iron manifold designed for durability and
controlled heat transfer. A close-coupled catalytic converter reduces
emissions and contributes to faster catalyst warmup. Primary and
secondary O2 sensors provide closed-loop mixture feedback. The system is
tuned for quiet, efficient operation rather than performance.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition is provided by a distributor-based system with an internal
ignition coil. Sensors inside the distributor housing supply crankshaft
and camshaft position information to the ECU.
Electrical specifications:
- Spark plug gap: approx. 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in)
- Alternator output: approx. 80-90 A
- Starter output: approx. 1.0-1.2 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
The ECU manages ignition timing using data from MAP, IAT, ECT, knock
sensor, and oxygen sensors. Spark plugs require replacement every
30,000-40,000 km, or up to 80,000 km if platinum plugs are used.
Additional systems integrated into the
F22B1 include:
- PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)
- EVAP emission control system with charcoal canister
- EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve for NOx reduction
- IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) for stable idle
- OBD-II diagnostic system
These systems ensure compliance with emissions regulations and
contribute to consistent drivability.
