The Honda F20C is a 2.0-liter high-performance
inline-four engine engineered specifically for the Honda S2000.
Introduced in 1999 for the AP1 chassis, the F20C quickly became one of
the most respected naturally aspirated engines ever installed in a
production vehicle. Its ability to deliver extraordinarily high power
density, combined with an unmatched 9,000-rpm redline, positioned it as
a marvel of mechanical engineering.
The F20C displaces 1,997 cmі (121.9 inі) using an 87.0 mm (3.43 in) bore
and an 84.0 mm (3.31 in) stroke. This slightly oversquare geometry
supports elevated piston speeds and high airflow capability. Compression
ratio is approximately 11.0:1 for AP1 models.
Output ranges from 237 hp (177 kW) at 7,800 rpm
in U.S. models to 247-250 hp (184-186 kW) at 8,300 rpm in JDM models.
Peak torque is approximately 218 Nm (161 lb-ft) at 7,500 rpm. Idle speed
is around 900 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The F20C block is cast aluminum and features FRM (Fiber Reinforced
Metal) cylinder liners composed of carbon and ceramic fibers embedded
within an aluminum matrix. The block uses a deep-skirt architecture to
enhance rigidity and reduce distortion when exposed to extreme rpm.
The crankshaft is forged steel with five main bearings, designed to
withstand high inertial forces. Piston cooling jets direct oil to the
underside of the piston crowns for thermal control during sustained
high-rpm operation.
The aluminum DOHC head contains 16 valves and uses VTEC on both intake
and exhaust camshafts. Valve sizes are approximately 35 mm (intake) and
30 mm (exhaust). The head features lightweight valvetrain components,
including hollow camshafts and low-mass rocker arms.
VTEC engages a high-lift cam profile above 6,000 rpm, enhancing
volumetric efficiency at elevated engine speeds. The port design
emphasizes straight, high-flow intake paths and efficiently scavenging
exhaust runners.
Fuel is delivered through Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point
injection system. Fuel pressure ranges from 350-400 kPa (51-58 psi).
Multi-hole injectors provide atomization necessary for efficient
combustion at high piston speeds.
Sensors include MAP or MAF (region-dependent), TPS, IAT, ECT, knock
sensor, primary and secondary oxygen sensors, CKP, and CMP. The ECU
manages injector timing, ignition timing, and VTEC engagement.
The lubrication system uses a high-capacity crankshaft-driven trochoid
oil pump. Oil pressure is approximately 350-600 kPa (51-87 psi) at 3,000
rpm and 80-150 kPa (12-22 psi) at idle. Oil capacity is around 4.7 L
(5.0 qt).
Piston cooling jets and high-capacity galleries maintain oil stability
during extended high-rpm use. Recommended viscosity includes 10W-30 or
5W-40 depending on climate.
The F20C uses a closed-loop liquid cooling system with a belt-driven
water pump and aluminum radiator. Coolant volume is 6.0-6.5 L (6.3-6.9
qt). Thermostat opening begins at 78-82°C (172-180°F) and fully opens at
around 95°C (203°F).
Cooling system pressure is 88-110 kPa (13-16 psi). Coolant passages are
optimized for high-heat regions near exhaust valves.
