The Nissan QR20DE engine is a 2.0-liter,
inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine belonging to
Nissan’s QR-series. Introduced in the early 2000s, the QR20DE powered
compact and mid-size Nissan vehicles such as the Nissan X-Trail T30,
Nissan Primera P12, Nissan Serena C24, and various regional models.
Designed to replace older SR-series engines, the QR20DE emphasizes fuel
efficiency, low emissions, strong mid-range torque, and mechanical
reliability.
It features an aluminum block, aluminum DOHC cylinder head,
four-valve-per-cylinder configuration, continuously variable valve
timing (CVTC), multi-point fuel injection (MPFI), a maintenance-free
timing chain, and low-friction internal components. The QR20DE is
engineered for dependable, long-life operation under daily driving
conditions, with smooth power delivery and efficient combustion.
The QR20DE displaces 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in). Bore is approx. 89.0 mm
(3.50 inches) and stroke is approx. 80.3 mm (3.16 inches). This slightly
oversquare configuration supports a blend of power and efficiency.
Compression ratio is 9.8:1 - 10.3:1 depending on market and emissions
requirements.
Maximum power output is 138-150 hp at 5,600-6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is
142-148 lb-ft (193-200 Nm) at 4,000 rpm. Idle speed is approx. 700-750
rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Redline is 6,500-6,700 rpm depending
on calibration.
The aluminum block reduces weight while providing thermal stability.
Cast-in steel cylinder liners improve wear resistance. The crankshaft is
forged steel and supported by five main bearings.
Pistons are aluminum alloy with low-friction coatings and optimized
crown geometry for efficient combustion. Connecting rods are forged
steel with full-floating wrist pins.
The QR20DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head with four valves per
cylinder.
Key features include:
- Chain-driven dual overhead camshafts
- Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control (CVTC) on the intake cam
- Roller-type cam followers
- Hydraulic lash adjusters
- Low-friction valve-train surfaces
The DOHC layout improves breathing at all engine speeds. The CVTC system
adjusts intake-valve timing to optimize torque, throttle response, and
emissions under varying load conditions. The timing chain uses an
oil-fed tensioner and guides designed for engine life.
The engine employs a multi-point electronic fuel-injection (MPFI) system
controlled by the ECM.
Fuel system components include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- Fuel-pressure regulator
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole fuel injectors
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Electronic throttle body (drive-by-wire on most models)
Fuel pressure normally ranges 43-50 psi.
The ECM calculates fuel delivery using data
from:
- O2 sensors
- Throttle-position sensor
- Crank and cam sensors
- Coolant temperature sensor
- MAF sensor
- Knock sensor
The MPFI system provides clean emissions, precise fuel metering, and
strong drivability.
A full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system is used.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 3.9-4.3 liters (4.1-4.5 US qt)
- Operating oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20
psi at idle
- Recommended oil: 5W-30 or 0W-20 synthetic (market dependent)
A crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump circulates oil through crankshaft
journals, rod bearings, camshafts, timing chain guides, and valvetrain
components. The QR20DE includes oil jets for cooling pistons. A spin-on
oil filter provides full-flow filtration.
The QR20DE uses a liquid cooling system
with:
- Aluminum-core radiator
- Belt-driven centrifugal water pump
- Thermostat
- Electric cooling fans
- Coolant expansion tank
Specifications:
- Thermostat opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity: 6.5-7.0 liters (6.8-7.4 US qt)
Proper coolant maintenance is essential for head-gasket preservation and
thermal efficiency.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-cleaner housing
- Replaceable paper air filter
- Intake snorkel
- MAF sensor
- Long-runner composite intake manifold
- Electronic throttle body
The intake manifold is tuned for mid-range torque. The MAF sensor
enables precise airflow measurement.
The exhaust system includes:
- Cast or stainless-steel exhaust manifold
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Underfloor catalytic converter (depending on model)
- Pre- and post-catalyst oxygen sensors
- Muffler system
This setup ensures emissions compliance and smooth exhaust flow.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
The QR20DE uses a fully electronic ignition system.
Components include:
- Coil-on-plug ignition (one coil per cylinder)
- Camshaft position sensor
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Knock sensor
- ECM-controlled spark advance
Spark plugs are platinum or iridium with a gap of approx. 0.9-1.1 mm
(0.035-0.043 inches). The ECM continuously adjusts ignition timing to
maintain efficiency and knock resistance.
- Length: 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
- Width: 600-630 mm (23.6-24.8 in)
- Height: 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
Dry weight: 125-145 kg (275-320 lb) depending on accessory
configuration.
Recommended intervals:
