The Suzuki F10D is a 1.1-liter,
inline-four-cylinder, single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 16-valve,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine. It is a member of Suzuki's
"F-series" of compact, lightweight, and efficient engines designed for
global subcompact and compact car applications in the 1990s and early
2000s. This engine represents a more conventional four-cylinder,
16-valve evolution of Suzuki's three-valve-per-cylinder designs,
offering improved breathing and higher specific output. It features a
simple yet effective SOHC 16-valve valvetrain, multi-point fuel
injection, and a compact aluminum block.
Designed for transverse front-wheel-drive layouts, the F10D prioritizes
smooth operation, good fuel economy, and adequate power for lightweight
vehicles like the Suzuki Swift/Ignis and Baleno. While not a
high-performance unit, it is celebrated for its exceptional reliability,
durability, and ease of maintenance. The engine is known for its smooth
and free-revving character, low vibration, and ability to achieve very
high mileage with basic care. It served as a dependable and economical
workhorse powering some of Suzuki's most successful global models,
embodying the company's philosophy of practical and robust engineering.
Engine Family / Model: Suzuki F-series (Inline), Model F10D.
Engine Type: Inline-four cylinder, transversely front-mounted,
four-stroke cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated gasoline engine.
Fuel Management: Electronic Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPFI/EFI).
Valve Configuration: Four valves per cylinder, 16-valve total, SOHC
layout.
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated.
Bore: 68.5 mm / 2.68 inches. Stroke: 72.0 mm / 2.83 inches.
Displacement: 1,061 cc / 64.7 cubic inches.
Compression Ratio: 9.9:1 or 10.0:1. Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Rotation Direction (from front/timing belt end): Clockwise.
Maximum Power Output (DIN/ECE): 50-55 kW (68-75 Hp) at 6,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 94-98 Nm (69-72 lb-ft) at 3,500-4,000 rpm.
Redline: 6,500-7,000 rpm. Fuel Requirement: Regular unleaded gasoline
(91 RON / 87 AKI).
Emissions Compliance: Euro 2 / Euro 3 standards.
Construction: Cast aluminum alloy with an open-deck design. This
lightweight construction contributes to overall vehicle fuel efficiency
and handling.
Cylinder Bores: Utilizes Suzuki's SCEM (Suzuki Composite Electrochemical
Material) linerless plating. A nickel-silicon carbide composite is
electroplated directly onto the aluminum bore surfaces, providing
excellent wear resistance and heat transfer while eliminating heavy iron
liners.
Crankshaft: Cast nodular iron, supported by five main bearings.
Main Bearings: Steel-backed, aluminum alloy shell bearings.
Pistons: Lightweight cast aluminum alloy with valve reliefs for the
16-valve head.
Connecting Rods: Forged steel or high-strength powder metal.
Balance Shafts: Not equipped. The inline-four configuration is
inherently balanced in primary and secondary forces, making additional
balance shafts unnecessary for this class of engine.
Oil Pan: Stamped steel oil pan.
Construction: aluminum alloy, cross-flow design.
Valve Arrangement: Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC), driven by a toothed
timing belt. Four valves per cylinder (16-valve total). A unique design
where a single camshaft operates all 16 valves via rocker arms.
Valvetrain: The camshaft has two lobes per cylinder: one lobe acts
directly on a forked rocker arm that opens the two intake valves; the
other lobe acts on a second rocker arm that opens the two exhaust
valves. This is a cost-effective method of achieving four-valve
operation with a single camshaft. Combustion Chamber: Pent-roof design
with a central spark plug, optimized for the four-valve layout to
promote efficient combustion. Valve Seat Angle: 45 deg.
Valve Diameter: Intake: 26.0-27.0 mm (1.024-1.063 inches). Exhaust:
23.0-24.0 mm (0.906-0.945 inches). Valve Clearance (Cold): Adjustable
via screw and locknut on the rocker arms. Clearance: Intake: 0.13-0.17
mm (0.0051-0.0067 in). Exhaust: 0.20-0.24 mm (0.0079-0.0094 in). Regular
adjustment is a key maintenance item. Camshaft Drive: Toothed rubber
timing belt with an automatic hydraulic tensioner and an idler pulley.
Injection System: Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPFI/EFI). Individual
injectors for each cylinder.
Engine Control Unit (ECU): Suzuki-specific digital ECU.
Fuel Injectors: Electromagnetic, top-feed injectors.
Fuel Pressure Regulator: Vacuum-referenced, mounted on the fuel rail.
Throttle Body: Single-bore, cable-operated.
Air Intake: Utilizes a vane-type Air Flow Meter (AFM) or a Manifold
Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor for load calculation, depending on model
year and market.
Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve: Maintains stable idle speed.
Type: Full-pressure, force-fed wet-sump system.
Oil Pump: Internal gear (trochoid) type, chain-driven from the
crankshaft.

Imperial quarts).
Recommended Oil Grade: API SH/SJ or later. Viscosity: SAE 10W-30 or
10W-40.
Operating Oil Pressure: At normal operating temperature: 294-441 kPa
(3.0-4.5 kgf/cm2 / 43-64 psi) at 3,000 rpm.
Type: Pressurized, forced circulation system.
Water Pump: Centrifugal, belt-driven from the crankshaft (via the timing
belt).
Thermostat: Wax pellet type. Opening temperature is 82°C (180°F) or 88°C
(190°F).
Radiator Pressure Cap: 88-108 kPa (0.9-1.1 kgf/cm2 / 13-16 psi).
Coolant Capacity (engine + radiator, approx.): 5.0 liters (5.3 US quarts
/ 4.4 Imperial quarts).
Coolant Recommendation: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze mixed with
demineralized water (50/50 ratio).

The Suzuki F10D 1.1L 16V engine was used in several key global Suzuki
models in the late 1990s and early 2000s: Suzuki Swift (Second
Generation, MK3) (1995-2003): A primary application, used in many
international markets as the 1.1L GL/GLi engine option. Suzuki Ignis
(First Generation, MF/ML) (2000-2008): Used as the base 1.1L engine in
many European and other markets. Suzuki Baleno (First Generation)
(1995-2002): Employed as the entry-level 1.1L engine option in certain
markets. Suzuki Wagon R+ (Second Generation, MH/MK) (1997-2003): The
"plus" version, which was larger than the Kei car Wagon R, offered the
F10D engine in some markets. Suzuki Alto (Sixth Generation,
International versions): Used in export-market Altos not bound by
Japanese Kei car regulations.
This 1.1L 16-valve F10D is distinct from the three-cylinder 1.0L F10D
used in Japanese Kei cars. It was part of Suzuki's global small car
strategy, providing a modern, multi-valve option that was more powerful
and efficient than older 8-valve 1.0L and 1.3L engines. It was
eventually succeeded by the K-series engines (e.g., K12B).
