The Volvo Penta D2-75F is a modern,
four-cylinder marine diesel engine engineered for auxiliary propulsion
in sailing yachts and small powerboats. This engine incorporates
turbocharging and aftercooling technology within a compact design,
delivering increased power density and efficiency over naturally
aspirated predecessors.
It balances performance with low noise and vibration levels, facilitated
by its integrated driveline options. Compliance with contemporary
emissions standards ensures global usability. The D2-75F is a complete
marine propulsion package, recognized for its reliability and smooth
operation in recreational marine applications.

EPA Tier 3 recreational marine standards.
The cylinder block is a compact, high-strength grey iron casting. It
employs a rigid design with an integrated crankcase, providing a solid
foundation for the rotating assembly. Cylinder bores are machined
directly into the parent material, utilizing a monolithic construction
without separate liners.
The block features five main bearing supports with cross-bolted main
bearing caps. This cross-bolting technique enhances structural integrity
and reduces noise emissions. Internal coolant passages and oil galleries
are cast directly into the block structure for efficient heat management
and lubrication supply.
The cylinder head is a single-piece aluminium alloy casting. This
construction offers effective heat dissipation and weight reduction. The
head design incorporates a direct injection combustion system with a
central, vertically mounted fuel injector. It accommodates four valves
per cylinder: two inlet and two exhaust valves.
Valve seats are manufactured from hardened material and are press-fitted
into the aluminium head. Valve guides are replaceable. Valve actuation
is via bucket tappets driven by a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC)
arrangement, contributing to precise valve control and high-speed
capability.
The fuel system is a common rail direct injection (CRDi) design. A
high-pressure fuel pump supplies pressurized fuel to a shared rail. The
rail distributes fuel at a constant high pressure to electronically
controlled solenoid injectors at each cylinder.
The Volvo Penta Engine Management System (EMS) governs injection timing,
duration, and pressure, enabling multiple injection events per cycle for
optimized combustion, noise reduction, and efficiency. The system
includes a fuel cooler, a primary filter/water separator, and a
secondary fine filter. Fuel must meet EN 590 or equivalent standards.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design. A
trochoid-type oil pump, driven from the crankshaft, draws oil from the
sump through a pickup strainer. Oil is forced through a full-flow,
replaceable spin-on oil filter. An engine coolant-cooled oil cooler
maintains optimal oil temperature.
Pressurized oil is delivered to the crankshaft main and connecting rod
bearings, the dual overhead camshafts, and the turbocharger bearings.
The engine oil capacity, including filter, is 5.5 liters (1.45 U.S.
gallons). Lubricant must meet Volvo Penta VDS-3 or equivalent ACEA
A3/B4, API CF specifications.
The engine employs a dedicated freshwater (closed-circuit) cooling
system with a heat exchanger. A single, belt-driven centrifugal pump
circulates a coolant mixture (ethylene glycol and water) through the
engine block, cylinder head, and oil cooler. Heat is transferred to a
tube-type heat exchanger.
A separate raw seawater circuit, powered by an electric or engine-driven
impeller pump, flows through the heat exchanger tubes, absorbing heat
from the freshwater coolant before being expelled. A thermostatic valve
regulates the operating temperature of the freshwater circuit. Total
coolant capacity is 4.5 liters (1.19 U.S. gallons).
Starting System: A 12-volt electrical system with a high-torque starter
motor. Charging System: A 12-volt, 115-ampere high-output alternator
with a multi-sensor regulation system for efficient battery charging.
Air Intake System: Includes an air filter and piping to the
turbocharger.
The turbocharger is a wastegate-controlled unit. Exhaust System: A wet
elbow design mixes cooling water from the heat exchanger with exhaust
gases for silencing. Engine Management: A comprehensive EMS provides
electronic governing, diagnostic functions, and sensor monitoring. An
electric solenoid acts as the engine stop control.
Length (engine only, from front pulley to flywheel housing): 660 mm
(26.0 inches).
Width (overall, at mounting feet): 640 mm (25.2 inches).
Height (over valve cover): 650 mm (25.6 inches).
Dry Weight (engine with standard saildrive or transmission, without
fluids): 258 kg (569 lbs).
Engine Oil Change Interval: 200 hours or annually, whichever occurs
first.
Oil Filter Change: Every oil change interval.
Fuel Filter Primary (water separator): Drain water weekly. Replace
element every 200 hours.
Fuel Filter Secondary: Replace every 200 hours.
Coolant: Check concentration and condition annually. Replace every two
years or 400 hours.
Raw Water Impeller: Inspect every season; replace every year or 200
hours.
Valve Clearance Inspection: Check every 1000 hours. Adjustment is not
standard practice; components are replaced as required if out of
specification.
Belt Tension: Check and adjust alternator/water pump belt tension every
200 hours.
Cylinder Head Bolts (M10): Tighten in the specified multi-stage
sequence. Final stage: 90 deg angular rotation after specified
pre-torque.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts (M10): 50 Nm + 60 deg (37 lb-ft + 60 deg).
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts (M9): 25 Nm + 90 deg (18 lb-ft + 90 deg).
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts (M12): 85 Nm. (63 lb-ft).
Injector Clamp Bolt: 25 Nm. (18 lb-ft).
Oil Pan Bolts (M6): 10 Nm. (7.4 lb-ft).
The Volvo Penta D2-75F is designed exclusively for marine use in
recreational and light commercial vessels. Its primary application is as
auxiliary inboard propulsion for modern sailing yachts in the 35 to
45-foot range, commonly integrated with a Volvo Penta Saildrive for
space-efficient installation and improved vibration damping. It is also
employed as the main propulsion engine for small motor cruisers, fishing
boats, and pilot vessels.
Furthermore, this engine serves as a prime mover for hydraulic power
take-offs (PTOs) and for driving high-output marine alternator sets. Its
compact footprint, modern electronic features, and emissions compliance
make it a standard choice for new boat builds and repower projects where
a balance of performance and compact size is required.
