The International Harvester BD144 is a compact
four-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine designed primarily for the
British and European agricultural market. As a product of International
Harvester's British manufacturing operations, this engine is
characterized by its high compression ratio and durable construction for
its size. It provides economical power for light to medium-duty tractor
applications, with a design philosophy centered on simplicity and field
serviceability.
The engine employs an indirect injection combustion system, which
contributes to smoother operation and lower combustion noise, albeit
with a slight trade-off in outright fuel efficiency compared to direct
injection designs. Its reputation is one of steadfast reliability in
smaller farm tractors.
Engine Type: In-line, four-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled diesel.
Combustion System: Indirect injection, utilizing a pre-combustion
chamber (swirl chamber).
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated.

tractor model and configuration.
Maximum Torque: 105 lb-ft (142 Nm) at low engine speeds.
Governed Speed: 2000 rpm.
Weight (dry): 530 lbs (240 kg).
The cylinder block is a one-piece casting manufactured from high-grade
gray iron. It is a robust, deep-skirt design that provides a rigid
foundation for the rotating assembly. The cylinder bores are integral to
the block casting and are machined directly into the iron.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings, with the bearing caps
made of forged steel. These caps are secured by two vertical studs and
nuts per cap. The block incorporates a full-length water jacket
surrounding all cylinders for effective cooling. The front timing case
is integral to the block casting.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component. It is designed
to accommodate the indirect injection system, with a pre-combustion
(swirl) chamber for each cylinder located adjacent to the main
combustion space. The head uses a crossflow design.
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valves (OHV), actuated by pushrods and
rocker arms.
Valves per Cylinder: Two (one intake, one exhaust).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 1.50 inches (38.1 mm).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 1.28 inches (32.5 mm).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 deg.
Valve Stem Diameter: 0.3125 inches (7.94 mm).
Valve Lash (cold): Intake 0.010 inches (0.25 mm), Exhaust 0.015 inches
(0.38 mm).
Adjustment is performed with the engine cold.
The fuel system is an indirect injection design using in-line injection
pumps.
Injection Pump: A CAV BPE 4A four-cylinder in-line jerk pump.
This is a piston-plunger type pump with individual elements for each
cylinder, governed mechanically.
Injection Nozzles: Pintle-type nozzles designed for pre-combustion
chamber use.
Injection Pressure: 1065 to 1140 psi (73.5 to 78.5 bar).
Fuel Lift Pump: A camshaft-driven, diaphragm-type mechanical transfer
pump.
Fuel Filter: A dual-stage filtration system, often comprising a primary
sediment bowl with a felt or mesh filter and a secondary fine paper
element filter.
Static Injection Timing: Must be set precisely.
The common setting is 24 deg before top dead center.
Timing marks are provided on the flywheel and injection pump drive gear.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design.
Oil Pump: Gear-type, located in the engine sump and driven by the
camshaft.
Oil Capacity: 6 quarts (5.7 liters) including filter.
Oil Filter: A cartridge-type, replaceable element housed in a canister
on the side of the engine block.
Oil Pressure (operating): 40 to 50 psi at rated speed (2.8 to 3.4 bar).
Minimum idle pressure is 10 psi (0.7 bar).
Pressure Relief Valve: Located within the oil pump body.
Oil Cooler: Not fitted as standard equipment.
The cooling system is a pressurized, thermosiphon-assisted system with a
pump.
Water Pump: Centrifugal type, belt-driven from the crankshaft pulley.
Thermostat: Bellows or wax-pellet type, begins to open at 165 F (74 C).
Radiator Pressure Cap: 4 psi pressure cap (0.28 bar).
Coolant Capacity: 12 quarts (11.4 liters).
Coolant Recommendation: A mixture of water and ethylene glycol
antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Starting Motor: 12-volt, inertia-drive type. Later models may use a
pre-engaged starter.
Charging Dynamo/Alternator: Early models used a 12-volt DC dynamo.
Later production and replacements often utilize a 12-volt alternator
with an output of 22 to 35 amperes.
Battery Recommendation: A single 12-volt battery with a minimum of 70
ampere-hour capacity.
Air Intake System: Oil-bath air cleaner.
Regular servicing of this cleaner is critical for engine longevity in
dusty conditions.
Intake Manifold: Cast iron.
Exhaust Manifold: Cast iron, stud-mounted to the cylinder head.
Length (front of crankshaft pulley to rear of flywheel housing): 29
inches (737 mm).
Width (over cylinder head): 21 inches (533 mm).
Height (top of rocker cover to base of oil pan): 25 inches (635 mm).
Weight (dry, as described): 530 lbs (240 kg).
Engine Oil Grade: Use a high-quality diesel engine oil meeting API
service classification CC or CD. SAE 30 is recommended for ambient
temperatures above freezing; SAE 20W-20 or 10W-30 can be used for
multi-grade applications. Oil Change Interval: Under normal agricultural
service, change engine oil every 100 operating hours. In dusty
conditions, reduce this interval to 50 hours.
Oil Filter Change: Replace the canister filter element with every oil
change. Fuel Filter Change: Drain the primary sediment bowl daily.
Replace the primary felt filter and secondary paper element every 250
operating hours. Coolant Change: Drain, flush, and refill the cooling
system every 12 months. Check coolant level weekly. Air Filter Service:
Service the oil-bath air cleaner every 10 hours of operation in normal
conditions, and daily in extreme dust.
This involves cleaning the mesh and replacing the oil in the sump with
fresh engine oil to the correct level. Valve Lash Adjustment: Check and
adjust valve clearance every 500 operating hours. Injection Timing
Check: Verify static injection timing every 1000 operating hours or if
performance issues arise. Compression Check: Periodically verify
compression pressure to assess engine condition. All cylinders should be
within 10% of the specified 330-355 psi range.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Torque in the specified sequence to a final value
of 65 to 70 lb-ft (88 to 95 Nm).
Retorque after the first hour of operation on a rebuilt engine.
Main Bearing Cap Nuts: 45 to 50 lb-ft (61 to 68 Nm).
Connecting Rod Cap Nuts: 35 to 40 lb-ft (47 to 54 Nm). Secure with new
split pins (cotter pins).
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 45 to 50 lb-ft (61 to 68 Nm).
Injector Nozzle Holder (in head): 35 to 40 lb-ft (47 to 54 Nm).
Rocker Arm Shaft Bracket Bolts: 18 to 20 lb-ft (24 to 27 Nm).
Oil Pan Drain Plug: 20 to 25 lb-ft (27 to 34 Nm).
The International Harvester BD144 engine was the dedicated powerplant
for specific British-built International Harvester tractors. Its primary
and most recognized application is in the International Harvester B275
tractor. This engine also powered the early production models of the
International Harvester B414 tractor, before being replaced by other
engines in later B414 variants.
These tractors were widely used throughout the United Kingdom, Europe,
and other Commonwealth countries for small to medium-sized farming
operations. The engine was not commonly used in North American models.
Specific model identification should be confirmed via the engine serial
number plate and original tractor model designations.
