The Mercedes-Benz OM460LA is an inline-six
cylinder, overhead camshaft (OHC), turbocharged and intercooled diesel
engine. This heavy-duty commercial vehicle engine belongs to the
Mercedes-Benz OM400/OM500 series, designed for long-distance trucking,
construction, and heavy transport applications. Production spans from
the early 2000s onward, with configurations meeting Euro III through
Euro V emission standards.
The OM460LA is a large-displacement, direct injection diesel engine
constructed with a reinforced cast-iron cylinder block and a separate
cast-iron cylinder head. It is a non-interference engine design. Key
features include an Electronic Unit Pump (PLD) fuel system, air-to-air
intercooling, a single turbocharger with wastegate control, and an
integrated engine brake. The engine is engineered for longitudinal
mounting in truck chassis, delivering high torque at low rotational
speeds to promote driveline longevity and fuel efficiency under extreme
load conditions over operational lifespans exceeding one million km.
Engine Type: Inline-six cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke,
turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine.

intercooler.
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel conforming to EN 590 standard.
Power Output: Ranges from 350 Hp at 1800 RPM to 450 Hp at 1800 RPM
(260-333 kW), with common outputs of 394 Hp and 435 Hp.
Torque Output: Ranges from 1350 lb-ft at 1100 RPM to 1900 lb-ft at 1100
RPM, with common ranges between 1350-1550 lb-ft.
Governed Speed: 1800-2100 RPM.
Oil Pressure (at operating temperature): 4.0-5.0 bar (58-73 psi) at 2000
RPM (minimum 1.0 bar / 15 psi at idle).
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength grey cast iron. It
is a rigid, deep-skirt design with extensive external ribbing for
structural integrity and vibration dampening. The block integrates the
upper crankcase. Cylinder bores are machined directly into the block
material. The block features seven main bearing saddles of generous
proportions. The main bearing caps are made from forged steel or
high-grade cast iron and are secured with four vertical bolts each.
The crankshaft is a forged steel unit with large-diameter journals,
designed for extreme torsional and bending loads. Connecting rods are
forged steel I-beam design. Pistons are aluminum alloy with a Ferrotherm
crown insert (a steel alloy band in the top ring groove) to withstand
high combustion pressures and temperatures. Each piston uses three
rings: a plasma-coated top compression ring, a tapered second
compression ring, and a three-piece oil control ring.
The cylinder head is a separate, heavy-section cast-iron component. It
employs an overhead camshaft (OHC) configuration. The camshaft is
gear-driven from the crankshaft via intermediate idler gears, ensuring
precise timing under high loads. The cylinder head uses four valves per
cylinder (24 total), arranged in a cross-flow design.
The valve train uses roller rocker arms actuated by the camshaft, with
valve clearance adjusted via screws and locknuts on the rocker arms. The
cylinder head incorporates individual replaceable valve seat inserts and
valve guides. The design provides high airflow capacity for efficient
combustion and low emissions.
Valve Arrangement: OHC, 4 valves per cylinder (24 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 44.0 mm (1.73 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 40.0 mm (1.57 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): Adjustable via screw and locknut on rocker arm.
Specification is 0.30 mm (0.012 in) for intake and exhaust, checked
cold.
Camshaft Drive: Gear train with intermediate idler gears.
The fuel system is an Electronic Unit Pump (EUP) system, known by
Mercedes-Benz as Pump-Line-Nozzle (PLD) with electronic control. Each
cylinder has a separate, camshaft-driven high-pressure pump (unit pump)
mounted in the cylinder block. Each pump generates high pressure in a
short fuel line connected to a mechanical injector in the cylinder head.
The engine control unit (ECU) controls injection timing and duration by
activating a solenoid valve on each unit pump. This system achieves high
injection pressures (up to 2000 bar / 29,000 psi) for fine atomization.
A secondary electric lift pump supplies fuel from the tank to the unit
pumps.
Fuel Injection Type: Electronically controlled Unit Pump (PLD).
Injection Pressure: Up to 2000 bar (29,000 psi).
Injection Control: Solenoid valve on each unit pump, managed by ECU.
Fuel Filter: Dual cartridge-type filters with water separator and
heater.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design with a
gear-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted externally and is
gear-driven from the crankshaft. The system employs a by-pass filtration
circuit in addition to the main full-flow filter. The oil cooler is
water-cooled and integrated into the engine cooling circuit.
Oil is drawn from a large-capacity, baffled cast-aluminum oil pan,
pressurized, sent through the cooler and filter, and distributed via a
main gallery. Dedicated spray jets cool the underside of each piston.
The system lubricates the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings,
camshaft bearings, gear train, and unit pump camshaft.
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Capacity (including filters): 38.0 US quarts (36.0 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow, plus a by-pass filter
cartridge.
Oil Type (recommended): Mercedes-Benz approved heavy-duty diesel engine
oil, specification 228.31 or 228.51, SAE 10W-40 or 15W-40.
Oil Change Interval: Up to 60,000 miles (100,000 km) using specified oil
and filter, as determined by service computer.
The cooling system is a pressurized, high-capacity pump-driven system. A
gear-driven centrifugal water pump provides circulation. The system uses
a map-controlled thermostat for optimal temperature regulation. The
air-to-air charge air cooler (intercooler) is separate from the engine
coolant circuit. The cooling system incorporates a water-cooled oil
cooler and a water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler on
applicable emissions versions. An electrically driven auxiliary coolant
pump may provide post-shutdown circulation.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, gear-driven pump, with map-controlled
thermostat.
Coolant Capacity: 55.0 US quarts (52.0 liters).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: Electronically controlled, nominal 83°C
(181°F).
Water Pump Drive: Gear-driven from the front of the engine.
Coolant Type: Mercedes-Benz approved coolant with corrosion inhibitor,
mixed with deionized water.
The engine is equipped with an integrated, camshaft-activated engine
brake (compression release brake). The system uses a dedicated lobe on
the camshaft and an extra rocker arm per cylinder to open the exhaust
valve near top dead center on the compression stroke, converting the
engine into an air compressor to dissipate vehicle kinetic energy.
0Depending on the emissions variant, the engine incorporates
multiple systems: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) with a cooler to
reduce NOx, a closed crankcase ventilation system, and for Euro V
versions, a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using Diesel
Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue) and a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). Earlier
Euro III/EPA04 versions may use in-cylinder measures and EGR only.
