The Suzuki F8DN, designated internally as F8D, is a
0.8-liter naturally aspirated inline three-cylinder petrol engine developed by
Suzuki and manufactured extensively by Maruti Suzuki in India. This powerplant
represents a comprehensive modernization of the earlier F8B engine, evolving
from a 6-valve configuration to a 12-valve architecture to improve volumetric
efficiency and combustion quality.
The engine was engineered specifically to meet progressively stringent emission
regulations while maintaining the compact dimensions and lightweight
construction required for entry-level passenger vehicles. Employing a single
overhead camshaft operating four valves per cylinder, the F8DN delivers modest
power figures but emphasizes low-end torque characteristics suited for urban
driving conditions.
The transition to multi-point fuel injection replaced earlier carbureted
versions, enabling precise fuel metering and improved cold-start behavior.
Despite its diminutive displacement of 796 cc, the engine gained recognition for
durability, ease of service, and fuel economy exceeding 22 kmpl in real-world
driving scenarios.
Configuration: Inline three-cylinder, transversely mounted for front-wheel-drive
applications.
Valvetrain: Single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 12 valves with four valves per
cylinder.
Displacement: 796 cc (48.6 cu.in).
Bore: 68.5 mm (2.70 in).
Stroke: 72.0 mm (2.83 in).
Bore-to-stroke ratio: Undersquare design favoring torque production at lower
engine speeds.
Compression ratio: 9.2:1.
Firing order: 1-2-3.
Engine rotation: Clockwise when viewed from the crankshaft pulley end.
Maximum power output: 35 kW (47-48 hp) at 6,000 rpm.
Maximum torque: 69 Nm (51 lb-ft) at 3,500 rpm.
Engine idle speed: 750 rpm.
Maximum engine speed: 6,500 rpm governed.
Emission compliance: Euro 4 through Euro 6 (BS4 to BS6) depending on production
year, achieved through precise fuel control and catalytic converter
optimization.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron, a
material selection prioritizing durability, thermal stability, and
cost-effectiveness for high-volume production. The cast-iron construction
provides excellent wear resistance for the cylinder bores, eliminating the
requirement for separate cylinder liners. The block features a closed-deck
design where the cylinder bores are fully supported at the upper deck surface by
cast material between each bore, enhancing head gasket sealing and reducing bore
distortion under thermal and mechanical loads.
Three-cylinder architecture employs a crankshaft with four main bearings, with
the intermediate main bearings positioned between cylinders to support the
crankshaft across its length despite the uneven firing interval inherent to
three-cylinder configurations. The block incorporates integrated engine mount
bosses on the front and transmission sides, designed for transverse mounting in
compact vehicle chassis. Water jacket passages are cast around each cylinder
bore with optimized flow routing to the cylinder head.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
using permanent mold casting techniques to achieve precise port geometry while
maintaining lightweight characteristics. The cross-flow design positions the
intake manifold on the rear side and the exhaust manifold on the front side for
transverse engine installations, minimizing exhaust system routing complexity.
Combustion chambers employ a hemispherical configuration with four valves
arranged symmetrically around the spark plug location to promote rapid flame
propagation across the small-bore cylinders.
The single overhead camshaft is supported by four bearing journals machined
directly into the cylinder head casting. Valve actuation employs a system of
roller rocker arms pivoting on individual shafts, with the camshaft lobes acting
directly on the rocker arms to open the valves. This arrangement reduces
frictional losses compared to direct-acting bucket tappets. Valve lash
adjustment requires manual intervention using adjusting screws and lock nuts on
the rocker arms.
Valves: 12 (4 per cylinder).
Intake valve diameter: 28.0 mm (1.10 in).
Exhaust valve diameter: 24.5 mm (0.96 in).
Valve stem diameter: 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Camshaft drive: Rubber-toothed timing belt with automatic spring-loaded
tensioner.
Camshaft duration: Optimized for low-speed torque with moderate overlap for
emissions control.
The fuel system employs a multi-point fuel injection
(MPFi) configuration with sequential firing capability. Fuel delivery is managed
by an in-tank electric fuel pump maintaining constant pressure at the injector
rail. Injectors are mounted in the intake manifold runners adjacent to the
intake ports, firing once per intake cycle for each cylinder. The engine
management system utilizes mass airflow or manifold absolute pressure sensing
depending on market specification, combined with oxygen sensor feedback for
closed-loop fuel control.
Injector flow rate: 120 cc/min at 3.0 bar (44 psi) nominal system pressure.
Fuel requirement: Unleaded petrol with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91
RON).
Fuel rail construction: Stainless steel with integrated pressure damper.
Throttle body: Cable-actuated, 40 mm (1.57 in) bore diameter with integrated
idle air control valve.
Fuel pump pressure: 3.0-3.5 bar (44-51 psi) regulated by returnless system in
later models.
The lubrication system operates as a fully pressurized
wet-sump configuration utilizing a rotor-type oil pump mounted internally within
the timing cover and driven directly by the crankshaft. Oil pickup is located at
the lowest point of the stamped steel oil pan to maintain suction under dynamic
driving conditions. A full-flow spin-on oil filter mounted externally on the
cylinder block removes particulate contamination before oil distribution to the
main gallery. From the main gallery, oil is routed to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and valve actuation
components.
Oil pump type: Internal rotor design.
Oil pressure at idle (warm): 0.8-1.2 bar (12-18 psi).
Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: 3.0-4.0 bar (44-58 psi).
Oil capacity with filter change: 3.2 liters (3.4 US qt).
Oil viscosity specification: 5W-30 or 10W-30 meeting API grade SG or higher.
Oil pan construction: Stamped steel with pressed baffle to control surge.
Oil filter thread: M20 x 1.5
Cooling system circulation is managed by a belt-driven
centrifugal water pump mounted on the cylinder block. Coolant flows from the
pump into the cylinder block water jacket, passing around the cylinder bores
before circulating upward through the cylinder head gasket orifices into the
cylinder head. The thermostat housing is mounted at the cylinder head outlet,
controlling flow to the radiator based on coolant temperature. A coolant bypass
circuit maintains circulation through the heater core and engine during warm-up
to ensure consistent temperature distribution and rapid cabin heating.
Coolant capacity: 3.6 liters (3.8 US qt) including heater core. Thermostat
opening temperature: 82°C (180°F). Water pump drive: Driven by the same timing
belt as the camshaft in an integrated arrangement. Radiator fan control: Single
electric fan with thermostatic switch integrated into the radiator. Coolant
specification: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors, 50
percent concentration recommended for most climates.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: A composite plastic intake manifold with
integrated resonance chamber reduces induction noise while maintaining flow
efficiency. The manifold incorporates tuned runners of equal length to promote
even cylinder filling across the three cylinders. An idle air control valve
mounted on the throttle body manages air bypass during cold starts and idle
speed regulation under accessory loads.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with integrated flange connections to
the catalytic converter positioned directly beneath the manifold. The
close-coupled catalytic converter achieves rapid light-off to reduce cold-start
emissions. A single heated oxygen sensor is mounted upstream of the catalyst for
fuel control, with a secondary sensor downstream in post-2005 models for
catalyst efficiency monitoring.
The ignition system utilizes a distributor-less
configuration with a waste-spark arrangement. Three ignition coils are
integrated into a single assembly mounted on the cylinder head, with each coil
firing two spark plugs simultaneously. The engine control module determines
ignition timing based on crankshaft position sensor input, engine load, and
coolant temperature.
Knock control is not employed in this engine,
requiring consistent fuel quality for optimal operation. Spark plug
type: NGK BKR5E-11 or equivalent nickel-alloy electrode. Spark plug gap:
1.1 mm (0.043 in). Ignition timing: 5-10 degrees before top dead center
at idle, advanced to 30-35 degrees under part-throttle conditions.
