The Ford B7JB is a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder gasoline
engine from the Ford EcoBoost family, specifically the "Fox" generation. It is
designed for transverse front-engine applications and is widely utilized in
European Ford models equipped with 48V mild hybrid (mHEV) technology. This
engine combines a compact cast iron block with an aluminum cylinder head to
balance structural integrity with weight reduction.
It features a turbocharger, direct fuel injection, and variable camshaft timing
(Ti-VCT) to optimize power delivery across the rev range. A notable innovation
is its cylinder deactivation system, which shuts off one cylinder under low-load
conditions to improve fuel efficiency. The valvetrain is driven by a timing
chain, though the oil pump is operated by a maintenance-sensitive "wet belt"
immersed in engine oil.
Engine Type: Inline 3-cylinder, turbocharged, 4-stroke
Family: EcoBoost (Fox)
Displacement: 999 cc (61 cu.in)
Valvetrain: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (12 valves total) with Ti-VCT
Bore x Stroke: 71.9 mm x 82.0 mm (2.83 in x 3.23 in)
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1
Fuel System: High-pressure direct injection (GDI)
Maximum Power: 125 hp (92 kW) at 6000 rpm
Maximum Torque: 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) at 1400-4500 rpm
System Torque (mHEV Overboost): Up to 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) during electric
assistance
Firing Order: 1-2-3
Emissions Standard: Euro 6d-ISC-FCM (WLTP)
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron,
providing a robust foundation capable of withstanding the high cylinder
pressures generated by the turbocharger. The engine has a closed-deck design to
enhance rigidity and minimize bore distortion under load.
The three cylinders are arranged in an inline
configuration. A unique maintenance feature is the "wet belt" system -
an oil-immersed rubber belt driving the oil pump - which requires
periodic inspection and replacement to prevent degradation.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum
alloy to reduce overall engine weight. It utilizes a Double Overhead Camshaft
(DOHC) design operating 12 valves via roller finger followers. Twin Independent
Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) allows for continuous adjustment of both
intake and exhaust camshaft phasing, optimizing volumetric efficiency across the
entire operating range.
The engine incorporates cylinder deactivation
technology, selectively closing the valves of one cylinder to improve
fuel economy during low-demand driving conditions.
The engine employs a high-pressure direct injection
(GDI) system where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This
system requires high-octane premium gasoline (recommended A-98) to maintain
optimal performance and prevent knock. The system operates at pressures
exceeding 200 bar (2,900 psi) to ensure fine atomization of the fuel for
efficient combustion.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.5 liters (4.8 US qt).
Oil Capacity (without filter): 4.3-4.4 liters (4.5-4.6 US qt).
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 meeting Ford specification
WSS-M2C947-A or WSS-M2C948-B. Maintenance: The system includes an oil-cooled
piston jet system to manage temperatures in the turbocharged environment.
Coolant Capacity (Engine): 8.3 liters (8.8 US qt).
Coolant Type: Ford WSS-M97B44-D or WSS-M97B44-D2 specification concentrate.
System Features: Includes a high-efficiency water pump and a separate cooling
circuit for the charge air cooler (intercooler) to manage intake air
temperatures.
Ignition: Individual coil-on-plug (COP) ignition system
controlled by the engine control unit (ECU). Turbocharger: Single twin-scroll
turbocharger (Continental unit) to minimize turbo lag and provide a broad torque
plateau.
Mild Hybrid System: Belt-integrated starter generator (BISG) operating at 48V,
which assists the engine during acceleration (overboost) and recovers energy
during braking. Starting System: Standard Start-Stop system integrated with the
mHEV architecture.
Dry Weight: 98-105 kg (216-231 lb)
Engine Length (Accessories included): 550 mm (21.7 in)
Engine Width: 650 mm (25.6 in)
Oil Change Interval: 12 months or 15,000 km (9,300
miles) under normal operating conditions. Oil Pump Belt: Requires inspection and
replacement at specific intervals (6-8 years or 100,000-120,000 km /
62,000-75,000 miles) due to the "wet belt" design. Failure to replace can lead
to oil pressure loss.
Timing Chain: Designed for the life of the engine under normal service
conditions; no routine replacement interval. Spark Plugs: Replacement interval
is 60,000 km (37,000 miles). Air Filter: Replacement interval is 45,000 km
(28,000 miles) or as required based on driving conditions.
Cylinder Head Bolts (Stage 1): 40 Nm (30 lb-ft)
Cylinder Head Bolts (Stage 2): 90° angle turn
Cylinder Head Bolts (Stage 3): 90° angle turn
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) + 90° angle turn
Connecting Rod Cap Nuts: 28 Nm (21 lb-ft) + 90° angle turn
Camshaft Cap Bolts: 12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
Spark Plugs: 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt: 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) + 90° angle turn
Wheel (TPMS) Sensor: 4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
