The Ford B7JA is a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged
petrol engine from the second generation of Ford’s globally acclaimed EcoBoost
family. Introduced in 2019, this power unit represents a significant evolution
over its predecessors, primarily engineered to deliver a balance of high
efficiency, reduced friction, and enhanced durability. It is designed as a
compact, front-transverse mounted engine, extensively employed in modern
European Ford models such as the Ford Puma and the seventh-generation Ford
Fiesta.
A defining characteristic of the B7JA is its integration of advanced
technologies to optimize performance under various loads. It features a
high-pressure direct injection system and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing
(Ti-VCT).
Many variants of this engine are equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system (mHEV),
utilizing a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BiSG) to enable seamless
start-stop functionality, energy recuperation, and electric torque assistance,
which effectively eliminates turbo lag and improves off-the-line responsiveness.
Furthermore, the engine incorporates cylinder deactivation technology,
seamlessly shutting off one of the three cylinders during low-demand cruising to
conserve fuel without compromising drivability.

total.

exhaust camshafts. Hydraulic Lifters: Equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters
(hydrocompensators) for maintenance-free valve clearance.

The cylinder block of the Ford B7JA is constructed from
cast iron. While aluminum is common in modern engine construction, Ford opted
for a cast iron block for this high-specific-output engine to provide superior
thermal stability and structural rigidity under high boost pressures. This
robust construction helps minimize bore distortion, ensuring better piston ring
sealing and long-term durability.
The closed-deck design further enhances the block’s strength. Within the block,
the crankshaft rotates on five main bearings. The engine is designed with a
specific focus on friction reduction, incorporating a low-tension piston ring
pack and a variable-displacement oil pump to minimize parasitic losses. The
overall cylinder block dimensions are compact, contributing to an installed
engine length of approximately 450 mm (17.7 in) and width of 650 mm (25.6 in)
when fully dressed with ancillaries.
The cylinder head is manufactured from lightweight cast
aluminum alloy to reduce overall engine mass and facilitate efficient heat
dissipation. It features a cross-flow design to optimize the intake and exhaust
paths. The DOHC arrangement actuates 12 valves, with four valves per cylinder
(two intake, two exhaust) arranged in a pent-roof combustion chamber design,
which is optimal for high compression ratios and efficient flame propagation.
The valves are actuated via the timing chain and camshafts, with the system
incorporating Ti-VCT. This allows the camshaft phasers to adjust valve timing
independently on the intake and exhaust sides, optimizing power delivery across
the rev range, improving idle stability, and contributing to reduced emissions.
The engine is equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating the need for
manual valve clearance adjustments throughout the engine’s life. The intake
valve diameter is 28.5 mm (1.12 in), while the exhaust valve diameter is 24.5 mm
(0.96 in).
The B7JA utilizes a high-pressure direct injection (DI)
system, where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than
the intake port. This system operates at pressures reaching 250 bar (3,626 psi),
atomizing the fuel for a more precise and complete burn.
Direct injection allows for very precise fuel metering, contributing to higher
power output, improved fuel economy, and lower CO2 emissions. The system is
integrated with the Ti-VCT and boost control to manage in-cylinder temperatures
and combustion stability across various engine loads. The fuel injectors are
centrally located between the valves to optimize spray pattern and combustion
efficiency. The fuel rail pressure is regulated dynamically by the engine
control unit based on load and engine speed.
The lubrication system is critical to the longevity of
this engine, featuring a sophisticated variable-displacement oil pump. This pump
adjusts its output based on engine demand, reducing the workload on the engine
when high oil pressure is not required, thereby saving fuel. Oil Capacity (with
filter): 4.6 liters (4.9 US qt).
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 5W-20 (meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C948-B) or
SAE 0W-20 (meeting WSS-M2C954-A1). The use of the correct low-viscosity oil is
mandatory to ensure proper flow through the narrow oil passages and to protect
the turbocharger and timing components.
Oil Pressure (idle): Approximately 1.5 bar (22 psi) at normal operating
temperature.
Oil Pressure (under load): 2.5-4.5 bar (36-65 psi).
The cooling system is designed for rapid warm-up and
precise temperature control to reduce friction and emissions. It utilizes a
water-cooled charge air cooler (integrated into the intake manifold) to reduce
the temperature of the compressed air from the turbocharger, increasing air
density and combustion efficiency.
The system features a map-controlled thermostat that can actively manage the
coolant flow to the cylinder head and block separately. This allows the engine
to reach its optimal operating temperature more quickly during cold starts. The
total coolant capacity for the engine and system is approximately 8.5 liters
(9.0 US qt).
The thermostat begins opening at 88°C (190°F), with full opening achieved at
98°C (208°F). The electric water pump integrated into the mHEV variants
continues coolant circulation after engine shutdown to protect the turbocharger
from thermal soak.
Cylinder Deactivation (CDA): A notable feature of this
engine is its ability to deactivate one cylinder. Under light load conditions
(such as highway cruising or deceleration), the engine can operate on only two
cylinders. The deactivated cylinder’s valves are held closed, acting as an air
spring, which reduces pumping losses and significantly improves fuel efficiency
by up to 6%. The transition is seamless and imperceptible to the driver.
Timing Drive: The primary valvetrain is driven by a durable timing chain, a
significant change from the first-generation 1.0 EcoBoost engines that utilized
a wet belt. This chain is designed for the life of the engine. However, the
engine retains a secondary oil pump drive belt that operates within the engine
oil; this component requires inspection and replacement at specified service
intervals to prevent potential oil starvation.
48V Mild Hybrid System (mHEV): In mHEV configurations, the engine is paired with
a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BiSG) and a 48V lithium-ion battery
with a capacity of approximately 0.5 kWh. This system recovers energy during
braking and coasting to recharge the battery. It provides up to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
of electric assistance to the engine during acceleration, contributing to the
peak torque figure, and enables a near-silent, ultra-fast start-stop function
that activates within 0.4 seconds.
Overall Engine Length (including ancillaries): 500 mm
(19.7 in)
Overall Engine Width: 650 mm (25.6 in)
Overall Engine Height: 650 mm (25.6 in)
Engine Weight: 99 kg (218 lb)

(4.9 US qt). Engine Oil Specification: SAE 5W-20 (WSS-M2C948-B) or 0W-20
(WSS-M2C954-A1). Coolant Capacity (engine + radiator): 8.5 liters (9.0 US qt).

12 months or 15,000 km (9,300 mi) as indicated by the Intelligent Oil Life
Monitor (IOLM).
Fuel Requirement: 98 RON premium unleaded. Service Intervals (Oil Pump Belt):
Replacement of the oil pump drive belt is a critical maintenance item,
recommended at intervals of 100,000 to 120,000 km (62,000 to 75,000 mi), though
specific intervals should be verified with the manufacturer for the individual
model year.

use of correct fuels and lubricants. Spark Plug Type: Iridium, with an electrode
gap of 0.7 mm (0.028 in). Spark Plug Replacement Interval: 60,000 km (37,000
mi). Air Filter Replacement Interval: 45,000 km (28,000 mi) under normal
