The Hyundai G4ED is a 1.6-liter, inline-four gasoline
engine belonging to the Alpha II series, a refined evolution of the original
Hyundai Alpha powerplant. Introduced around the year 2000, this engine served as
a cornerstone of Hyundai’s global compact vehicle lineup for over a decade,
valued for its robust mechanical simplicity and dependable operation. The G4ED
represents a significant development from its predecessor, the G4EC, achieved
primarily through an increased bore dimension that raised displacement to 1.6
liters.
This engine is characterized by a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) configuration
with sixteen valves, a design that prioritized volumetric efficiency and a broad
power band. In an era when many competitors in the segment employed simpler
single overhead camshaft designs, the G4ED offered a more sophisticated
valvetrain that contributed to responsive power delivery.
Its construction combines a durable cast iron cylinder block with a lightweight
aluminum alloy cylinder head, a hybrid architecture that balances structural
rigidity with weight management. The G4ED’s reputation for durability, coupled
with its straightforward maintenance requirements - including the use of
hydraulic lash adjusters that eliminate manual valve adjustments - cemented its
status as a reliable workhorse in applications ranging from subcompact
hatchbacks to sedans.
The G4ED is a naturally aspirated, water-cooled, four-stroke engine designed for
transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive vehicle architectures. Its design
prioritizes reliability and a smooth power delivery characteristic suited for
daily commuting and urban driving conditions.

The cylinder block of the G4ED is manufactured from
gray cast iron, a material chosen for its exceptional durability, dimensional
stability under thermal stress, and superior damping characteristics that
contribute to reduced engine noise and vibration. The block features a
closed-deck design, where the cylinder bores are fully surrounded by the water
jacket structure, providing maximum rigidity for the cylinder head gasket
sealing surface.
Cast-in-place iron cylinder bores are machined to precise tolerances without the
use of separate liners. The deep-skirt block design extends below the crankshaft
centerline, enhancing structural rigidity and providing robust support for the
main bearing caps. A cast aluminum oil pan is sealed to the lower crankcase,
contributing to overall engine weight reduction.
Block Material: Cast iron.
Bore Diameter (finished): 76.5 mm (3.01 in).
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, fractured-split design.
Cylinder Bore Deformation Limit: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft with five main bearings. Eight
counterweights are incorporated to balance primary and secondary rotating
forces. Connecting Rods: Powdered metal forged steel, fractured-cap design for
precision alignment.
The cylinder head is constructed from aluminum alloy to
reduce overall engine mass and improve heat dissipation. It utilizes a
cross-flow design where intake and exhaust ports are located on opposite sides
of the head, optimizing thermal efficiency and airflow. The DOHC valvetrain
operates sixteen valves, with each camshaft acting directly on bucket-type
tappets.
A distinctive feature of this engine is the incorporation of hydraulic lash
adjusters (HLAs) integrated within the tappets. These HLAs automatically
maintain zero valve clearance throughout the engine’s operational life by using
engine oil pressure to compensate for thermal expansion and component wear,
eliminating the need for periodic manual valve adjustment.
The camshafts are driven by a timing belt, but a small secondary timing chain
connects the two camshafts to one another. This hybrid system allows for a
single tensioner and simpler service procedures. The combustion chambers are of
a pent-roof design, promoting efficient flame propagation and allowing for a
high compression ratio.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder
Valve Diameter (Intake): 31.0 mm (1.22 in)
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 27.0 mm (1.06 in)
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.22 in)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
Hydraulic Lash Adjuster Oil Clearance: Self-adjusting
The G4ED employs a multi-point injection (MPI) fuel
system, also referred to as port fuel injection. This system utilizes fuel
injectors mounted in the intake manifold, positioned to spray fuel directly onto
the back of the intake valves. This design promotes excellent air-fuel mixture
preparation, immediate throttle response, and has the inherent benefit of using
the fuel to clean the intake valves, preventing carbon buildup.
Fuel delivery is managed by an engine control unit (ECU) that receives input
from sensors including the mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensors, throttle
position sensor, and crankshaft position sensor to calculate the optimal
injection duration and timing for all operating conditions.
A fuel pump assembly located within the fuel tank supplies pressurized fuel to a
fuel rail that distributes fuel evenly to all four injectors. A fuel pressure
regulator maintains a constant pressure differential across the injectors,
ensuring consistent fuel delivery regardless of intake manifold vacuum or boost
pressure.
Injection Type: Multi-point injection (port injection)
Fuel Pressure: 294-314 kPa (42.6-45.5 psi) with vacuum line disconnected
Fuel Injector Resistance: 13.8-15.2 Ohms
Fuel Requirement: 87 octane or higher (Research Octane Number 91 or higher)
Fuel Cutoff: 6,500 rpm
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws fluid from the oil pan through a strainer screen and
circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before delivering it
to the main oil gallery.
From the main gallery, pressurized oil is distributed to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and the hydraulic lash
adjusters. A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system
pressure within operational limits to prevent over-pressurization during cold
starts or high engine speeds.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 or 10W-40 (API SL, SM, or higher)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 3.3-3.7 liters (3.5-3.9 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-441 kPa (42.6-64.0 psi)
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven
Oil Filter Bypass Valve Opening Pressure: 98-118 kPa (14.2-17.1 psi)
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design employing a cross-flow aluminum radiator with a single electric cooling
fan. A centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing belt, circulates
coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, and the heater core.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature by bypassing the radiator until the engine reaches operating
temperature. The system is designed to provide consistent thermal management for
the aluminum cylinder head and cast iron block interface, maintaining uniform
temperatures across the cylinder head gasket sealing surfaces.

Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: A two-piece aluminum intake manifold
with variable intake length (VIS) on certain applications. The VIS system uses a
butterfly valve to alter the intake runner length, optimizing airflow for
low-end torque and high-end power.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold integrated into a single downpipe. A
heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is mounted upstream of the catalytic converter for
fuel trim feedback, with a second sensor downstream to monitor catalyst
efficiency.
Distributorless ignition system utilizing three
ignition coils in a wasted-spark configuration. Each coil fires two spark plugs
simultaneously (cylinders 1 and 4, and cylinders 2 and 3), with one cylinder on
the compression stroke and the other on the exhaust stroke. The system is
controlled by the ECU based on crankshaft position and camshaft position sensor
inputs.
Timing Drive: The primary timing drive is a reinforced
rubber timing belt with integral teeth, driven by the crankshaft sprocket and
tensioned by an automatic spring-loaded tensioner. A secondary, short timing
chain connects the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets. The engine is of
interference design; timing belt failure results in contact between valves and
piston crowns.
