Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is a one-piece cast iron construction. It uses a deep-skirt design that enhances rigidity and reduces vibration. Cylinder liners are replaceable, dry-type units manufactured from centrifugally cast iron. The block incorporates five main bearing caps, also constructed from cast iron.
Main bearing caps are secured with two vertical bolts per cap. Internal oil galleries and coolant passages are cast into the block. A one-piece gear case cover, mounted on the front of the block, houses the timing gears and front seal.
Cylinder Head and Valves
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component. It is secured to the block with a multi-bolt pattern requiring a specific tightening sequence. The head uses a direct injection configuration. It houses two valves per cylinder: one intake and one exhaust.
Valve seats are induction hardened for wear resistance. Valve guides are replaceable. Valve actuation is via pushrods and rocker arms from a single camshaft located within the cylinder block. The camshaft is gear-driven from the crankshaft. Valve stem seals control oil consumption.
Fuel System
The fuel system is a direct injection, mechanically governed system. A rotary-type injection pump, driven by the engine timing gears, delivers high-pressure fuel to individual injector lines. Unit injectors, one per cylinder, atomize fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
The system’s mechanical governor regulates fuel delivery to maintain the set engine speed under load variation. The fuel supply circuit includes a primary sediment filter with a water separator and a secondary spin-on fuel filter. A mechanical lift pump transfers fuel from the tank.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, full-flow filtration design. A gear-type oil pump, driven from the front gear train, draws oil from the sump through a pickup tube and screen. Oil is pumped through a full-flow, replaceable spin-on oil filter. An engine coolant-cooled oil cooler is standard equipment.
Pressurized oil is delivered to the crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, the camshaft bearings, the rocker arm shaft, and the valve train. The engine oil capacity is 10.2 liters (2.7 U.S. gallons). Oil must meet John Deere Plus-50 II or equivalent API CJ-4, ACEA E7 specifications.
Cooling System
The engine uses a pressurized, forced-circulation liquid cooling system. A centrifugal water pump, belt-driven from the crankshaft, circulates coolant. Coolant flows through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and oil cooler. System temperature is regulated by a thermostatic valve.
The system is designed for use with a radiator and fan. Coolant must be a 50/50 mixture of clean water and ethylene glycol antifreeze with a supplemental coolant additive (SCA). Total coolant capacity is 14 liters (3.7 U.S. gallons).
Other Systems

starter motor.

Machinery Applications
The John Deere 4045D is engineered for a broad spectrum of industrial and agricultural machinery. Its primary applications include agricultural tractors in the mid-power range, such as various John Deere 5000 Series tractors. The engine is common in industrial power units, driving hydraulic systems for log splitters, balers, and irrigation pumps.
It serves as a prime mover for generator sets in the 30-50 kVA range. Additional uses include powering air compressors, skid-steer loaders, and small construction equipment like rollers and trenchers. The engine's mechanical simplicity and proven durability make it a staple in equipment requiring reliable, continuous-duty power.
