The International D360 is a durable,
mid-displacement, inline-six diesel engine produced by International
Harvester and later Case IH for agricultural, industrial, and
construction machinery. It was developed as a natural evolution of the
popular D310 and D358 engines, offering more displacement, improved
torque output, smoother operation, and greater load-handling capability
while preserving the rugged mechanical reliability that characterized IH
diesel powerplants of the era. The D360 was widely used in International
tractors such as the 766, 886, and several industrial machines and
loaders.
The D360 became known for its simplicity, ease of overhaul, and
dependability under heavy agricultural loads such as plowing, tilling,
and drawbar applications. Operators valued the engine’s ability to lug
down without stalling, tolerate dirty conditions and low-quality diesel
fuel, and perform reliably for thousands of hours. Its direct-injection
combustion system, cast-iron construction, and gear-driven valvetrain
ensured robust long-term performance even in remote operating
environments where service resources were limited.
The International D360 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is 5,899 cc (360 cubic
inches). Cylinder bore is 98.4 mm (3.875 inches), and stroke is 129 mm
(5.08 inches). This very long-stroke layout produces excellent low-speed
torque, ideal for tractors and industrial equipment.
Compression ratio ranges between 16.5:1 and 17.5:1 depending on
production year and application. Power output varies with tractor model
and governor settings but falls between 90 and 115 Hp (67-86 kW) at
approximately 2,300-2,500 rpm. Peak torque ranges from 380 to 440 Nm
(280-325 lb-ft), generally occurring at 1,300-1,500 rpm. Idle speed is
commonly set between 650 and 750 rpm. Governed maximum speed is usually
2,500 rpm. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is forged steel and fully counterweighted, supported by
seven main bearings for smooth and stable rotation under heavy loads.
Pistons are cast aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns and
direct-injection combustion bowls. The piston ring assembly consists of
two compression rings and one oil-control ring. Connecting rods are
forged steel with replaceable bearing inserts. The camshaft is located
within the block and is gear-driven, ensuring precise timing and
eliminating belt-maintenance requirements.
The cylinder block is a heavy cast-iron component engineered for maximum
durability, rigidity, and long service life. Deep webbing and reinforced
main-bearing saddles support the rotating assembly under constant
high-load agricultural work. Coolant passages are cast around each
cylinder liner, ensuring even temperature distribution and minimizing
distortion.
The D360 block is fully rebuildable. Cylinders may be bored oversize
during overhaul, and pistons are commonly available in standard and
various oversize increments. The block includes accessory mounting
bosses for alternators, hydraulic pumps, power-steering pumps, and
industrial attachments.
The cylinder head is cast iron and features a direct-injection
combustion chamber layout. Multi-hole injectors spray fuel into machined
bowls in the pistons. The head utilizes overhead valves actuated by
pushrods and rocker arms from the camshaft. Valve seats are hardened
steel, designed to withstand high thermal loads.
Valve-lash settings (cold):
- Intake: 0.25-0.30 mm (0.010-0.012 in)
- Exhaust: 0.30-0.35 mm (0.012-0.014 in)
The head gasket uses fire rings around each cylinder to maintain sealing
under high combustion pressures.
The D360 employs a fully mechanical direct-injection fuel system. A
mechanical lift pump draws diesel from the tank, sending it first
through a sediment bowl or water separator, then through a fine
paper-element fuel filter. The high-pressure mechanical injection pump—a
Bosch inline pump—meters quantity and controls injection timing.
Injection pressures generally range between 250 and 350 bar. Multi-hole
direct-injection injectors atomize fuel efficiently into the combustion
chamber. Fuel timing is adjustable through the pump mounting and
internal timing mechanisms.
Fuel system maintenance:
- Replace fuel filters every 250-300 hours
- Drain water separator as required
- Service injectors every 1,000-1,500 hours
- Check and adjust injection timing during major service
The lubrication system is a high-capacity, full-pressure wet-sump
design. A gear-type oil pump draws oil through a pickup screen and
forces it through a full-flow filter before distributing it to the main
oil gallery. All major components—including crankshaft bearings,
connecting rods, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and auxiliary
systems—receive oil under pressure.
Oil pressure:
- 250-350 kPa (36-51 psi) at operating speed
- 70-120 kPa (10-17 psi) at idle
Oil capacity generally ranges from 7.5 to 9.0 liters (7.9-9.5 US
quarts). Recommended oils include SAE 15W-40 or 20W-50 diesel-rated oils
meeting API CF or higher. Service intervals require oil and filter
changes every 200-250 operating hours.
Cooling is provided by a closed-loop, forced-circulation liquid system.
A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the
block, cylinder head, and radiator. The thermostat begins opening around
82°C (180°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). Cooling system capacity
is approximately 12-14 liters (12.7-14.8 US quarts). System pressure is
maintained by a radiator cap rated 70-90 kPa (10-13 psi).
Tractors and industrial machines using the D360 often include oversized
radiators to handle prolonged high-load field conditions. Radiator fins
must be cleaned regularly to prevent overheating.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake design varies by equipment:
- Agricultural tractors use dual-stage dry-element air filters
- Industrial units may use oil-bath or cyclone-type pre-cleaners for
dusty environments
The intake manifold is cast aluminum or cast iron depending on version.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron and engineered for continuous exposure
to high exhaust temperatures. Many applications use vertical exhaust
stacks; industrial versions may include mufflers or spark arrestors.
The D360 typically uses a 12-volt electrical system, though some
industrial machines employ 24-volt versions. Alternators commonly output
25-45 amperes. Starter motors provide approximately 2.5-3.0 kW of
cranking power. Cold-start aids include glow plugs or an intake manifold
heater depending on tractor model.
Depending on installation, the D360 may
support:
- hydraulic pump drives
- power-steering pump systems
- PTO drives
- generator heads
- industrial belt-driven equipment
- auxiliary pulley configurations
- Length: 880-940 mm (34.6-37.0 in)
- Width: 580-640 mm (22.8-25.2 in)
- Height: 930-980 mm (36.6-38.6 in)
