The Isuzu 6BG1T engine is a turbocharged, heavy
duty inline six cylinder diesel engine engineered for medium and heavy
commercial vehicles, industrial machinery, and construction equipment.
As the turbocharged evolution of the naturally aspirated 6BG1, the 6BG1T
offers significantly increased torque and power output while retaining
the exceptional durability, long service life, and reliability of the BG
series.
Its cast iron block and head, direct injection combustion system, gear
driven camshaft and injection pump, and overbuilt lubrication and
cooling systems allow it to withstand continuous heavy load operation.
The engine is widely used in excavators, wheel loaders, generators,
buses, and off road machinery. The 6BG1T is known for smooth low speed
operation, excellent fuel economy at working rpm, and long overhaul
cycles.
The Isuzu 6BG1T is a four stroke, inline six water cooled diesel engine.
Displacement is approximately 6494 cc or 6.49 liters. Bore is 105.0 mm
or 4.13 inches. Stroke is 125.0 mm or 4.92 inches. This long stroke
design promotes strong torque at low engine speeds. Compression ratio
typically ranges from 17.0:1 to 18.0:1 depending on turbocharger and
market version.
Power output for common factory settings
includes:
- 150 to 200 horsepower at 2400 to 2600 rpm
- Industrial continuous duty ratings from 120 to 160 horsepower
- Construction equipment ratings up to 190 horsepower.
Torque output usually falls between: 550 to 680 Nm or 406 to 502 lb-ft
at 1500 to 1800 rpm. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Crankshaft
rotation is clockwise when viewed from the front. The crankshaft is
forged steel with seveNmain bearings to minimize flexing and ensure long
bearing life.
Pistons are aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns and are oil cooled
through piston cooling jets. Connecting rods are forged steel. The
cylinder block is cast iron with heavy webbing. The cylinder head is
cast iron with direct injection combustion chambers and hardened valve
seats.
The 6BG1T uses a mechanical direct injection system. A mechanical lift
pump draws fuel through a primary water separator and a secondary fine
filter. The inline mechanically governed injection pump meters fuel and
controls timing. High pressure steel lines deliver fuel to multi hole
injectors. Turbocharged engines use modified injection curves to match
boost pressure and maintain proper air fuel ratio.
Fuel system characteristics:
- Injection pressure: approximately 180 to 220 Mpa
- Lift pump type: mechanical diaphragm or plunger
- Injection timing: mechanically set at pump
- Return system: closed loop to fuel tank.
Fuel system service:
- Fuel filter every 20000 km or 12000 miles
- Water separator drainage at each service
- Injector nozzle cleaning every 60000 to 80000 km
- Pump calibration at 120000 km or overhaul.
The lubrication system is full pressure wet sump. A gear driven oil pump
draws oil from the sump and sends it through a full flow spin on filter.
Turbocharged versions include piston cooling jets. Oil flows to main
bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, rocker assemblies, and timing
gears.
Oil system specifications:
- Capacity: 15 to 17 liters or 15.8 to 17.9 quarts
- Operating oil pressure: 350 to 450 kPa or 51 to 65 psi
- Idle pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
- Recommended oil: SAE 15W 40 diesel grade.
Oil change intervals:
- 5000 to 8000 km in trucks
- 250 to 300 hours in industrial machines.
Cooling is liquid based using a belt driven centrifugal water pump.
Coolant flows through block passages, head passages, radiator,
turbocharger cooling jackets, and heater core if equipped. Thermostat
opens at approximately 82 C or 180 F and is fully open at about 95 C or
203 F.
Cooling data:
- Capacity: 24 to 28 liters or 25 to 30 quarts
- System pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
- Coolant mixture: 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent water.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The 6BG1T uses a turbocharger to increase intake air density and improve
combustion efficiency. Boost pressure typically ranges from 0.5 to 0.9
bar depending on variant. Some models include intercoolers. Air intake
uses a dry paper element filter with optional cyclone pre cleaner.
The exhaust manifold is heavy cast iron. Turbocharger mounts directly to
the manifold. Industrial versions may include spark arrestors. Some
emissions regulated units include EGR valves.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
The engine normally uses a 24 volt electrical system. Alternators
produce between 35 and 70 amperes. Starter motors are rated between 4.0
and 5.0 kW. Cold starting aids include intake air heaters or glow plugs
depending on model. Batteries range from 90 to 150 amp hours.
The camshaft and injection pump are gear driven. Valve actuation uses
pushrods and rocker arms.
Valve clearances (cold):
- Intake: 0.30 mm or 0.012 in
- Exhaust: 0.40 mm or 0.016 in.
Engine dimensions vary by accessory configuration.
Standard dimensions:
- Length: 1100 mm or 43.3 inches
- Width: 650 mm or 25.6 inches
- Height: 950 mm or 37.4 inches
Dry weight: 520 to 600 kg or 1146 to 1322 lbs depending on turbocharger
and accessories.
Recommended service intervals:
- Oil and filter every 5000 to 8000 km or 250 to 300 hours
- Fuel filter every 20000 km
- Air filter inspection every 10000 km
- Coolant replacement every 2 years or 40000 km
- Valve lash every 20000 km or every 500 hours
- Injector servicing every 60000 to 80000 km.
Compression pressures:
- Normal: 2800 to 3200 kPa or 406 to 464 psi
- Minimum: 2400 kPa or 348 psi.
- Cylinder head bolts: 160 to 180 Nm
- Main bearing caps: 210 Nm
- Connecting rod bolts: 110 Nm
- Flywheel bolts: 200 Nm
