The Caterpillar C9.3B is a highly advanced,
electronically controlled, turbocharged diesel engine engineered for
modern off-highway, construction, agricultural, forestry, and industrial
power applications. As part of Caterpillar’s next-generation industrial
engine lineup, the C9.3B builds upon the C9.3 ACERT foundation but
incorporates major improvements in fuel efficiency, power density,
emissions compliance, reliability, and overall packaging. Designed for
global Tier 4 Final, Stage V, and equivalent emissions requirements, the
engine integrates high-pressure common-rail fuel injection, advanced
air-handling technologies, electronically managed aftertreatment, and
robust cast-iron structural components.
The C9.3B delivers outstanding torque rise, instantaneous throttle
response, and excellent fuel economy across continuous-duty cycles. It
is widely used in medium and large wheel loaders, forestry equipment,
agricultural tractors, excavators, pumps, and generator sets. With its
dense yet service-friendly packaging, the C9.3B provides OEMs a
powerful, durable engine capable of long service intervals, reduced
downtime, and long overhaul life.
The Caterpillar C9.3B is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged
inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is approximately
9.3 liters (568 cubic inches). Bore is 115 mm (4.53 in), and stroke is
149 mm (5.87 in), giving the engine a long-stroke configuration
optimized for high torque output at mid-range speeds.
Compression ratio ranges from 16.5:1 to 17.0:1 depending on emissions
calibration. Peak torque: 1,850–2,400 Nm (1,365–1,770 lb-ft) @
1,400–1,600 rpm. Idle speed: 650–750 rpm. Maximum governed speed:
2,100–2,300 rpm. Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
Power ratings (varies by OEM):
— Industrial: 313–456 hp (233–340 kW) @ 1,800–2,200 rpm
— Agricultural: 300–430 hp (224–321 kW)
— Forestry: 340–450 hp (254–336 kW)
— Generator sets: 200–350 kW @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
The crankshaft is a forged-steel, fully counterweighted unit supported
by seven main bearings. Pistons are steel-crown or composite
steel-aluminum designs with internal cooling galleries. Connecting rods
are forged steel with replaceable bearings. A gear-driven camshaft
provides stable long-term timing accuracy.
The cast-iron cylinder block uses a deep-skirt design for superior
rigidity and reduced vibration. Wet replaceable cylinder liners allow
complete overhaul and long-term field rebuild capability.
Block features include:
— Enlarged bearing saddles
— Deep structural ribbing
— Cross-bolted main-bearing architecture
— Full coolant circulation around liners
The cylinder head is cast iron and
incorporates:
— Four valves per cylinder
— Hardened valve seats and guides
— Direct-injection combustion chambers
— Rocker-arm valvetrain with pushrods
Cold valve-lash specifications:
— Intake: 0.25–0.30 mm (0.010–0.012 in)
— Exhaust: 0.30–0.40 mm (0.012–0.016 in).
The C9.3B employs a high-pressure common-rail injection system with
ECM-controlled injectors.
Key features:
— Injection pressures up to 2,500 bar
— Multi-event injection
— Electric lift pump
— Dual-stage filtration
— Integrated water separator
— Fuel-rail pressure and temperature monitoring
Fuel-system maintenance:
— Replace filters every 250–300 hr
— Drain water separator daily or as needed
— Injector inspection every 1,000–1,500 hr.
A full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system is used with a gear-driven
pump.
Oil capacity: 28–32 liters (29.5–33.8 qt).
Oil pressure:
— Operating: 300–450 kPa (44–65 psi)
— Idle: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi)
Recommended oils: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 meeting API CJ-4 or CK-4
Oil change interval: 250 hr for industrial duty.
Cooling uses a high-capacity centrifugal
water pump that circulates coolant through:
— Block and head passages
— Turbocharger center housing
— Oil cooler
— Radiator
— Aftercooler circuits (air-to-air or air-to-water)
Thermostat characteristics:
— Opening: 82°C (180°F)
— Full open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling-system capacity: 30–45 liters (32–47 qt)
Pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Turbocharging is standard; some versions use variable-geometry
turbochargers (VGT). Aftercooling is typically via charge-air cooler
(air-to-air) or jacket-water aftercooler (air-to-water).
Air filtration options:
— Dual-stage dry filters
— Heavy-duty forestry filters
— Cyclone pre-cleaners
Exhaust aftertreatment may include:
— DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst)
— DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
— SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)
