The Caterpillar 3406E is one of the most
respected and widely used heavy-duty inline six-cylinder diesel engines
ever produced by Caterpillar. Introduced in the mid-1990s as the
electronic successor to the mechanical 3406C, the 3406E integrated
Caterpillar’s Advanced Diesel Engine Management (ADEM) electronics for
precise control of fuel delivery, emissions, and engine protection.
Known for its exceptional durability, strong low-end and mid-range
torque, long service life, and ease of overhaul, the 3406E quickly
became a favorite in heavy trucks, industrial equipment, generator sets,
and marine vessels.
Its robust cast-iron block, steel-forged rotating assembly,
electronically controlled unit-injector fuel system, turbocharging, and
flexible ratings made the 3406E ideal for long-haul trucking and
severe-duty applications. Many 3406E engines remain in service today
with well over a million km or tens of thousands of operating hours due
to their legendary reliability and rebuildability.
The Caterpillar 3406E is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged,
electronically controlled inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Total
displacement is 14.6 liters (893 cubic inches). Bore is 137 mm (5.40
in), and stroke is 165 mm (6.50 in). The long-stroke configuration
provides outstanding low-speed torque and excellent fuel economy at
cruiser RPM. Compression ratio varies by rating, typically 16.0:1 to
17.0:1.
Power ratings include:
– On-highway truck applications: 335–550 hp (250–410 kW) at 1,800–2,100
rpm
– High-performance variants: up to 600 hp (447 kW)
– Industrial machinery: 300–525 hp (224–391 kW)
– Generator-drive: 250–450 kW standby at 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque ranges: 1,800–2,500 Nm (1,327–1,844 lb-ft) at 1,200–1,500
rpm. Idle speed is typically 550–650 rpm. Maximum governed speed ranges
from 2,100–2,300 rpm depending on calibration.
The crankshaft is forged steel with induction-hardened journals,
supported by seven large main bearings. Pistons are aluminum-alloy with
reinforced crowns and internal cooling galleries. Connecting rods are
forged steel with replaceable big-end inserts. The gear-driven camshaft
ensures long-term timing stability.
The block is cast iron with extremely thick walls, deep cross-ribbing,
and strong main-bearing saddles. The engine uses replaceable wet
cylinder liners, allowing complete rebuilds without machining the parent
bore. Coolant passages surround each liner for uniform thermal
distribution.
The cylinder head is cast iron with six individual combustion chambers
and four valves per cylinder—two intake and two exhaust. The valvetrain
uses pushrods and rocker arms.
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.38–0.43 mm (0.015–0.017 in)
– Exhaust: 0.64–0.69 mm (0.025–0.027 in).
The 3406E uses electronically controlled unit injectors (EUI) driven by
the camshaft and controlled by the ADEM ECM. Fuel pressures exceed 1,200
bar at the injector tip. The ECM manages injection timing, duration, and
multiple injection events.
