General Technical Data
The Mitsubishi 4G69 is a 2.4-liter inline-four gasoline engine developed as part of the Sirius engine family. Introduced in the early 2000s to replace the 4G64, the 4G69 retained the proven cast-iron block architecture but featured significant updates including a longer stroke, reinforced internals, improved cylinder head design, and in later versions, Mitsubishi’s MIVEC variable valve timing system. It was designed to offer a strong combination of torque, reliability, and efficiency for mid-sized cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles.
The engine appeared in a wide range of
Mitsubishi models such as the Outlander, Galant, Lancer, and Grandis, as
well as in select overseas applications under Proton and Dodge brands.
Known for its smooth power delivery, durable construction, and
adaptability to various emissions standards, the 4G69 represents the
culmination of Mitsubishi’s long experience with the Sirius family.
In its standard form, the 4G69 employed a single overhead camshaft
(SOHC) 16-valve configuration with a balance shaft system to reduce
secondary vibrations. Later versions, primarily the DOHC MIVEC variant,
introduced continuously variable intake valve timing for improved
efficiency and responsiveness. Depending on configuration and market,
power output ranged from 120 to 166 horsepower, and torque peaked
between 200 and 220 Nm. The 4G69’s long stroke design emphasized low and
midrange torque, making it particularly well suited for heavier vehicles
and urban driving conditions.
The Mitsubishi 4G69 has a total displacement of 2,378 cc (145.1 cubic
inches), achieved by a bore of 87.0 mm (3.43 inches) and a stroke of
100.0 mm (3.94 inches). The engine employs a robust cast-iron cylinder
block with integrated balance shaft system to counteract secondary
vibration typical of large-displacement inline-fours. The crankshaft is
forged steel running on five main bearings, with connecting rods made of
high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum alloy pistons.
The compression ratio varies depending on the
version and application, generally between 9.5:1 for early non-MIVEC
models and 10.5:1 for later MIVEC variants. The firing order is 1-3-4-2,
and the crankshaft rotates clockwise when viewed from the front.
The standard 4G69 uses a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) aluminum
cylinder head operating four valves per cylinder through roller rocker
arms and hydraulic lash adjusters. This configuration ensures quiet
operation and eliminates the need for periodic valve clearance
adjustment. The MIVEC version utilizes a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC)
design with Mitsubishi’s variable valve timing system on the intake
camshaft.
MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing
Electronic Control) allows continuous adjustment of intake valve timing,
optimizing performance and efficiency across the rev range. Valve
diameters are approximately 34 mm (1.34 in) for intake and 29 mm (1.14
in) for exhaust. Camshaft drive is via a toothed rubber timing belt that
also drives the water pump, with a hydraulic tensioner maintaining
proper belt tension. The belt replacement interval is 90,000 to 100,000
km (55,000–62,000 miles).
Output varies depending on configuration and market calibration. The
standard SOHC version typically develops 120 to 136 horsepower (88 to
101 kW, 118 to 134 bhp) at around 5,500 rpm, with peak torque of 198 to
210 Nm (146 to 155 lb-ft) at 4,000 rpm. The DOHC MIVEC version raises
output to approximately 160 to 166 horsepower (118 to 123 kW, 158 to 164
bhp) at 6,000 rpm and torque to around 215 to 220 Nm (159 to 162 lb-ft)
at 4,000 rpm.
The engine redline is around 6,500 rpm, and idle speed is 700 ± 50 rpm. Compression pressures for healthy cylinders measure around 1,200 to 1,400 kPa (174–203 psi) with no more than 100 kPa (15 psi) difference between cylinders.
Fuel System
The 4G69 employs an electronically controlled sequential multi-point fuel injection (MPI) system. Fuel is delivered from an in-tank electric pump through a high-pressure line to the fuel rail and individual injectors positioned at the intake ports. Injector resistance is approximately 12 ohms, and fuel pressure is maintained at roughly 300 kPa (43 psi) by a pressure regulator integrated into the rail. The fuel filter is replaceable and should be serviced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles).
The fuel type is unleaded gasoline, with a recommended octane rating of 95 RON (91 AKI). The ECU governs injector pulse width, ignition timing, and idle air control based on inputs from the oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and manifold absolute pressure sensor. Later MIVEC-equipped engines use electronic throttle control (ETC) for improved precision and integration with the variable valve timing system.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a pressurized, full-flow wet sump type driven by a trochoid oil pump located within the front cover and operated directly by the crankshaft. Oil from the sump is drawn through a pickup strainer, filtered through a full-flow spin-on cartridge filter, and distributed to main bearings, connecting rods, camshafts, and valve train components.
Piston cooling oil jets are incorporated to reduce piston crown temperatures under load. Nominal oil pressure is around 400 kPa (58 psi) at 3,000 rpm and approximately 100 kPa (15 psi) at idle. Oil capacity is 4.3 liters (4.5 US quarts, 3.8 Imperial quarts) including filter. Mitsubishi recommends engine oils meeting API SJ or higher, SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on ambient temperature.
Oil and filter replacement interval is every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or six months under normal conditions. The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system is integrated into the rocker cover to maintain proper internal pressure and control oil vapor emissions.
Cooling System
The 4G69 features a liquid-cooled system with a belt-driven centrifugal water pump ensuring even coolant distribution through the block, head, and radiator. The thermostat begins to open at 82°C (180°F) and is fully open at 95°C (203°F). The radiator is aluminum with plastic end tanks, and cooling fans are either electric or viscous clutch-driven depending on vehicle application.
The system operates under a pressure of approximately 88 kPa (13 psi) and has a total capacity of about 7.0 liters (7.4 US quarts). Coolant mixture should consist of a 50/50 blend of ethylene glycol-based antifreeze and distilled water, providing freeze protection to –35°C (–31°F).
Mitsubishi specifies coolant replacement every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years. The cooling system also includes sensors for the ECU and temperature gauge, along with a bypass circuit to ensure even thermal control during warm-up.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
Air induction is through a plastic or aluminum intake manifold optimized for midrange torque. The throttle body diameter is approximately 60 mm (2.36 inches). The air filter is a dry paper element located in a sealed air box, replaced every 20,000 km (12,000 miles). Exhaust manifolds vary between cast-iron and tubular stainless steel depending on the application.
The MIVEC version typically features a more free-flowing design with an integrated catalytic converter. An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is fitted on some versions to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The ECU manages air-fuel ratio control using upstream and downstream oxygen sensors.
Ignition and Electrical System
Early SOHC versions employ a distributorless ignition system with a single ignition coil and high-tension leads. Later and MIVEC versions use direct ignition with coil-on-plug modules, one per cylinder. Spark plug type is NGK BKR6E-11 or equivalent, gapped to 1.1 mm (0.043 in). Spark plug tightening torque is 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).
Spark plugs should be replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The alternator output ranges from 85 to 100 amperes depending on vehicle, and the starter motor is a 1.2 kilowatt reduction gear type. The electrical system operates at 12 volts DC with negative ground.
Emissions and Control Systems
The 4G69 complies with Euro 3 to Euro 4 emission standards in most configurations, employing a three-way catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, and evaporative emission control (EVAP) system. The ECU monitors various sensors and actuators to maintain stoichiometric combustion and reduce exhaust pollutants. On MIVEC models, valve timing adjustment enhances combustion efficiency under different loads. The system is OBD-II compliant, capable of self-diagnosis and fault-code storage.
Dimensions and Weight
The external dimensions of the 4G69 engine assembly are approximately 670 mm (26.4 inches) in length, 630 mm (24.8 inches) in width, and 700 mm (27.6 inches) in height. The dry weight is around 155 kg (342 lbs) for SOHC versions and about 160 kg (353 lbs) for DOHC MIVEC variants. Engine mounts are arranged in a three-point pattern with hydraulic isolation to reduce vibration transmission. The oil pan is made of pressed steel or aluminum depending on vehicle type.
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance ensures reliable performance and longevity. Oil and filter changes are required every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Spark plugs are replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The air filter element should be renewed every 20,000 km (12,000 miles), and the fuel filter every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The timing belt, tensioner, and water pump should be replaced at 90,000 to 100,000 km (55,000–62,000 miles).
Coolant is changed every two years or 40,000 km (25,000 miles). Idle speed should remain at 700 ± 50 rpm. Compression pressure when new is about 1,300 kPa (190 psi). Minimum acceptable pressure is 1,000 kPa (145 psi), with allowable variation not exceeding 100 kPa (15 psi) between cylinders.
