General Technical Data
The Nissan CA20E is a 2.0-liter inline-four
gasoline engine belonging to Nissan’s CA-series family, produced
primarily throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. It was one of the
largest-displacement members of the CA lineup, designed to provide a
balance of reliability, fuel efficiency, and moderate performance for
everyday passenger cars. The CA20E was widely used in the Nissan
Bluebird, Nissan Stanza, Nissan Auster, and several export-market sedans
and coupes. It is known for its simplicity, long service life, and ease
of maintenance.
Featuring a cast-iron engine block, aluminum cylinder head, single
overhead camshaft (SOHC) valvetrain, and electronically controlled
multi-point fuel injection, the CA20E offers durability and efficiency
typical of Nissan’s engineering philosophy of the 1980s. Although not a
high-performance engine, it provides smooth operation, adequate torque,
and excellent longevity when properly maintained. Its robust
construction makes it a favorite among owners who prioritize reliability
and low operating costs.
The CA20E is a water-cooled, inline-four, single overhead cam, 8-valve
gasoline engine with electronic fuel injection. Total displacement is
1974 cc, or approximately 120.5 cubic inches. The engine uses a bore of
84.5 mm, or 3.33 inches, and a stroke of 88.0 mm, or 3.46 inches. The
long-stroke design enhances low-end torque and fuel efficiency at lower
rpm, providing good drivability in urban and mixed driving. The
compression ratio varies between 8.5:1 and 9.0:1 depending on market and
emissions calibration.
Factory power output for the CA20E ranges from approximately 100 to 105
horsepower, or 75 to 78 kW, at about 5200 rpm. Maximum torque is
typically between 160 and 170 Nm, or 118 to 125 lb-ft, at roughly 2800
to 3200 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Idle speed is controlled
electronically and is typically set between 750 and 850 rpm. The rev
limiter is generally near 6500 rpm, although the SOHC 8-valve design
favors mid-range torque rather than high-rpm operation. Despite this,
the bottom-end construction is strong and capable of long-term
durability under continuous load.
The engine block is cast iron and features integrated cylinder bores for
strength and temperature stability. Four cylinders are arranged in-line,
with five main bearings supporting the forged-steel crankshaft. The
crankshaft is designed with generous journal dimensions and high
rigidity to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).
The connecting rods are forged steel, and the
pistons are aluminum alloy with molybdenum-coated skirts for reduced
friction. Each piston uses two compression rings and one oil control
ring. Wrist pins are fully floating, improving durability under
sustained load and reducing wear.
The CA20E’s internal construction favors long-term reliability rather
than maximum performance. The block’s rigidity helps prevent warping
under thermal stress and minimizes head gasket issues. The oil passages
and coolant galleries are designed for uniform thermal distribution,
preventing localized hot spots.
The cylinder head is made of lightweight aluminum alloy and contains a
single overhead camshaft. The valvetrain consists of one intake and one
exhaust valve per cylinder, totaling eight valves. Valve actuation is
accomplished by rocker arms driven by the camshaft. The camshaft is
belt-driven via a toothed timing belt that must be replaced
periodically. Bucket lifters with shims are used for valve clearance
control; hydraulic lash adjusters are not included, so periodic manual
valve lash checks are required.
Valve clearances when cold are generally set to about 0.30 mm (0.012
inches) for intake valves and 0.35 mm (0.014 inches) for exhaust valves.
The combustion chambers use a semi-pentroof configuration providing good
airflow and efficient combustion. Even with only eight valves, the CA20E
breathes well at low and mid-range speeds, matching its design intent as
a smooth and efficient commuter engine.
Fuel System
The CA20E uses Nissan’s multi-point electronic fuel injection system.
Fuel is pumped from the tank by an electric pump and delivered to the
fuel rail at approximately 300 kPa, or 43 psi. A vacuum-referenced fuel
pressure regulator maintains constant differential pressure across the
injectors. Four solenoid-operated injectors deliver finely atomized fuel
into each intake port.
The electronic control unit (ECU) governs injection timing, duration,
and mixture corrections based on input signals from the mass air flow
(MAF) sensor, throttle position sensor (TPS), coolant temperature
sensor, intake air temperature sensor, crank angle sensor, and oxygen
sensor. The MAF sensor is of the hot-wire type, providing precise
airflow measurement.
The O2 sensor allows closed-loop operation to maintain optimal air-fuel ratios under light and moderate loads. The throttle body is cable-operated and includes an idle air control valve for cold-start enrichment and stabilized idle. Fuel filter replacement is recommended every 30,000 km, or 18,000 miles.
Lubrication System
The CA20E employs a pressurized, wet-sump lubrication system. A trochoid-type oil pump driven by the crankshaft draws oil from the sump through a strainer and sends it through a full-flow spin-on oil filter. Lubrication is delivered to the main bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and other engine components.
The system is engineered for consistent oil pressure under all operating
conditions. Oil pressure at 3000 rpm typically ranges between 350 and
450 kPa, or 50 to 65 psi, while idle pressure remains above 70 kPa, or
around 10 psi.
Total oil capacity with filter is approximately 3.5 liters, or 3.7 US
quarts, or 3.1 imperial quarts. Recommended viscosity is 10W-30 or
10W-40 depending on ambient temperature. Routine oil and filter changes
are critical for long-term valvetrain and bearing life.
Cooling System
The cooling system is a closed-loop, forced-circulation design. A
belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block,
cylinder head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat begins to open
at approximately 82°C, or 180°F, and is fully open around 95°C, or
203°F. Cooling system capacity is roughly 6.0 liters, or 6.3 US quarts.
A cross-flow aluminum radiator provides cooling, with either an electric
cooling fan or a mechanical fan depending on vehicle model and market.
Coolant should be replaced every 40,000 km, or 25,000 miles, to prevent
corrosion and maintain thermal efficiency. The cooling system includes a
coolant temperature sensor that sends information to the ECU for fuel
and ignition adjustments.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The induction system includes an air filter housing with a replaceable
paper element, an intake duct leading to the MAF sensor, and an aluminum
intake manifold designed for efficient distribution of air to all
cylinders. The throttle body includes an idle speed control valve that
maintains steady idle under varying loads.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron, delivering exhaust gases to a
catalytic converter on vehicles equipped with emissions controls. Oxygen
sensor feedback enables closed-loop fuel control. The exhaust design
prioritizes durability and reduced emissions rather than maximum flow.
Ignition and Electrical System
The CA20E uses an electronic distributor equipped with an internal crank
angle sensor to provide ignition timing data to the ECU. The ignition
coil supplies high voltage to the distributor, which routes spark to
each cylinder. The ECU controls ignition timing advance based on load,
rpm, and temperature.
Spark plugs are typically NGK BPR6ES or equivalent, gapped at about 1.1
mm (0.043 inches). Replacement is recommended every 20,000 to 30,000 km.
The alternator provides between 55 and 70 amperes depending on model.
The starting system uses a reduction-gear starter motor for reliable
cranking. The electrical system operates at 12 volts DC.
Emissions and Other Systems
The engine uses several emissions-reducing subsystems, including a PCV valve to route crankcase vapors back into the intake, an evaporative emissions control system to manage fuel vapors, and on many versions an EGR system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The ECU monitors key sensors and uses early diagnostic functions similar to OBD-I systems.
Dimensions and Weight
The CA20E engine assembly is similar in size to the CA18 engines but slightly taller due to its longer stroke. Overall length is approximately 680 mm, or 26.8 inches; width is about 610 mm, or 24.0 inches; and height is roughly 700 mm, or 27.6 inches. Dry weight is around 150 kg, or 331 lbs, depending on accessories and market configuration. The compact size allows installation in both front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive layouts.
Maintenance Data
Regular maintenance ensures long service life. Oil and filter changes are recommended every 5000 to 10,000 km, or 3000 to 6000 miles depending on usage. Air filter replacement should occur every 20,000 km. Fuel filter replacement every 30,000 km. Spark plug inspection every 20,000 km. Valve clearance inspection every 40,000 to 60,000 km. Coolant replacement every 40,000 km.
Timing belt replacement every 100,000 km, or 60,000 miles, including tensioner and water pump inspection. Idle speed should be around 800 rpm with accessories switched off. Compression pressure should range from 1300 to 1500 kPa, or 190 to 218 psi, with no more than 100 kPa, or 15 psi, difference between cylinders.
