(27.6 inches).
Dry Weight (engine only, complete with turbo): 185-195 kg (408-430 lbs).
Engine Oil and Filter Change Interval: Critical. Every 8,000-10,000 km
(5,000-6,200 miles) or 12 months, using only premium full synthetic oil.
Severe or performance driving warrants 5,000 km intervals. Always allow
a 1-2 minute idle cooldown after any spirited or highway driving before
shutting off the engine. Spark Plugs (DI Cassette): Replace with
specified cold-range platinum plugs every 30,000-40,000 km
(18,600-24,850 miles).
Inspect plugs regularly for signs of detonation or lean conditions.
Timing Belt and Components: Replace timing belt, hydraulic tensioner,
and all idler pulleys every 80,000 km (50,000 miles) or 5 years,
whichever comes first. This is the single most important maintenance
task. Accessory Drive Belts: Inspect every service. Replace at signs of
wear. Coolant Replacement: Every 2 years or 40,000 km (24,850 miles).
Fuel Filter: Replace every 40,000 km (24,850 miles).
Air Filter: Replace with a high-quality panel filter every 20,000 km
(12,400 miles). Performance aftermarket filters are popular. PCV System
(Crankcase Ventilation): The oil trap ("PCV box") must be cleaned or
replaced every 40,000-60,000 km. A clogged PCV system is a common cause
of rear main seal and other oil leaks on high-boost B204 engines.
Intercooler Hoses: Inspect for cracking, swelling, or oil saturation.
The rubber hoses can degrade under high boost and heat.
Cylinder Head Bolts (M12): Torque-to-Yield (TTY). Must use new bolts.
Trionic Engine Procedure: Step 1: Tighten all bolts in sequence to 30 Nm
(22 lb-ft). Step 2: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg (1/4 turn).
Step 3: Wait 5 minutes. Step 4: Loosen all bolts completely. Step 5:
Repeat Step 1 (30 Nm). Step 6: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg
(1/4 turn) again. Follow exact factory sequence.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 110-120 Nm (81-89 lb-ft).
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 65-70 Nm (48-52 lb-ft) + 30-degree turn.
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 95-105 Nm (70-77 lb-ft) + 30-degree turn.
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt: 250-270 Nm (184-199 lb-ft). Requires special
holding tool.
Camshaft Sprocket Bolts: 40-45 Nm (30-33 lb-ft).

Intercooler Pipe Clamps: 3-5 Nm (2.2-3.7 lb-ft).
The Saab B204R engine was exclusively used in the high-performance
flagship models of the Saab 9000 series in the mid-1990s: Saab 9000 CSE
(1994-1997): The Saab 9000 CSE 2.0 Turbo with the B204R was a
sport-focused liftback. Saab 9000 CD (1994-1997): The Saab 9000 CD 2.0
Turbo sedan featured the B204R engine. Saab 9000 Aero (1994-1998): The
most famous application. The Saab 9000 Aero was the ultimate performance
variant, powered solely by the B204R engine. It was offered in both CSE
(liftback) and CD (sedan) body styles from 1994 onward. This model
cemented the B204R's legendary status.
The B204R was also used in some limited-edition models like the 9000
Griffin. It is important to distinguish it from the lower-output B204L
(low-pressure) and B204E (medium-pressure) engines used in other 9000
Turbo models. The B204R is the definitive "Aero" engine, delivering 220
PS and propelling the heavy 9000 to highly competitive performance
figures for its day.
