The Chrysler A588 is an inline-four cylinder,
single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 16-valve gasoline engine. This
2.0-liter powerplant belongs to Chrysler's modern "World Engine" family
lineage, succeeding the earlier ECB series. Production was centered on
the 2001-2005 model years. The A588 engine is constructed with a
cast-iron cylinder block and an aluminum cylinder head. It is a
non-interference engine design.
The primary update from the previous ECB engine is the implementation of
a different crankshaft trigger wheel to interface with the newer Next
Generation Controller (NGC) engine management computer. This change
renders the A588 not directly interchangeable with vehicles using the
older SBEC engine control systems. The engine was engineered for
transverse mounting in compact front-wheel-drive vehicles, balancing
fuel economy with adequate power output for its class.
Engine Type: Inline-four cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke gasoline
engine.
Bore: 87.5 mm (3.44 in).
Stroke: 83.0 mm (3.27 in).
Displacement: 1996 cc (121.8 cu.in).
Compression Ratio: 9.3:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Cylinder Numbering: Number 1 cylinder is at the accessory drive (front)
end.
Engine Rotation (viewed from the flywheel end): Clockwise.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 87 pump octane minimum.
Power Output: 132 Hp (98 kW) at 5600 RPM.
Torque Output: 130 lb-ft at 4600 RPM.
Governed Speed: 6250 RPM.
Oil Pressure (at operating temperature): 25-80 psi at 2000 RPM (minimum
6 psi at idle).
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron. It is a rigid design
that integrates the upper crankcase. The cylinder bores are machined
directly into the block material. The block assembly incorporates five
main bearing saddles. The main bearing caps, also constructed from cast
iron, are secured with two vertical bolts each.
The crankshaft is a nodular iron casting with five main journals and
four crankpins, featuring a unique trigger wheel for the NGC computer
system. Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearing
inserts. Pistons are constructed from aluminum alloy. Each piston uses
three rings: two compression rings and one oil control ring. The piston
pin is a press-fit in the connecting rod small end.
The cylinder head is an aluminum alloy casting with integrated camshaft
bearing journals. It employs a single overhead camshaft (SOHC)
configuration operating sixteen valves via a rocker arm arrangement. The
camshaft is chain-driven from the crankshaft. The valvetrain
incorporates hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating the need for manual
valve clearance adjustment. The combustion chamber is a multi-valve
pent-roof design.
Valve Arrangement: SOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (16 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 33.0 mm (1.299 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 28.0 mm (1.102 in).
Intake Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.217 in).
Exhaust Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.217 in).
Valve Lift (Intake): 6.85 mm (0.270 in).
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 6.85 mm (0.270 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): Hydraulic lash adjusters; no manual adjustment.
Camshaft Drive: Duplex roller chain with mechanical tensioner.
The fuel system is a sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection
(SFI) system. The system is a returnless design, a key update for the
NGC era, which uses a fuel pressure sensor and electronic control of the
in-tank pump to regulate pressure. Primary components include an in-tank
electric fuel pump module, a fuel filter, a fuel rail, and four
injectors. The fuel pressure regulator is integrated into the fuel pump
module within the tank.
Fuel Injection Type: Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI).
Fuel Pressure (at rail, static): 58 psi (400 kPa) with key on/engine
off.
Fuel Injector Flow Rate: 150 cc/min at 43.5 psi.
Fuel Injector Resistance: 11.5-13.5 ohms.
Throttle Body Bore Diameter: 52 mm (2.05 in).
Idle Air Control: Stepper motor type.
Idle Speed (base, in neutral): 750 ± 50 RPM.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design with a
rotor-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted to the front of the
cylinder block and is driven by the crankshaft via a direct tang
connection. The system incorporates a screw-on, disposable full-flow oil
filter. Oil is drawn from the sump, pressurized, filtered, and then
directed to the main oil gallery.
From the gallery, oil feeds the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod
bearings, and camshaft bearings. Oil also travels through a gallery to
the cylinder head to lubricate the rocker arms and hydraulic lash
adjusters. A pressure relief valve is integrated into the oil pump
housing.
Oil Pump Type: Rotor-type (gerotor), crankshaft-driven.
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 4.5 US quarts (4.3 liters).
Oil Capacity (dry fill): 5.0 US quarts (4.7 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow.
Relief Valve Opening Pressure: 55-65 psi (379-448 kPa).
Oil Type (recommended): API certified SL or later, 5W-30 viscosity.
The cooling system is a pressurized, pump-driven system with an aluminum
crossflow radiator. The water pump is mounted to the front of the
cylinder block and is driven by the serpentine accessory drive belt. A
wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant temperature, opening at
approximately 195°F (91°C). Coolant circulates from the pump through the
block and cylinder head, then returns to the radiator. A coolant bypass
circuit allows circulation during engine warm-up. The system includes a
plastic coolant recovery reservoir.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, pump-driven, with thermostatic
control.
Coolant Capacity: 6.5 US quarts (6.2 liters).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 195°F (91°C).
Radiator Cap Pressure Rating: 16 psi (110 kPa).
Water Pump Drive: Serpentine accessory belt.
The ignition system is a distributorless, coil-on-plug (COP) design.
This is a significant upgrade controlled by the NGC computer. Four
individual ignition coils mount directly atop each spark plug. The
Engine Control Module (ECM) triggers each coil independently based on
signals from the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position
sensor. Spark plug gap is 1.0 mm (0.039 in). Recommended spark plug type
is a platinum or double-platinum design for extended service life.
The engine is equipped with comprehensive emission controls managed by
the NGC computer. These include a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
system, an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, a charcoal canister
for evaporative emissions (EVAP) control, and a close-coupled three-way
catalytic converter. The system uses heated oxygen sensors (HO2S)
upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter.
Overall Length: 560 mm (22.0 in).
Overall Width: 590 mm (23.2 in).
Overall Height: 640 mm (25.2 in).
Approximate Dry Weight: 125 kg (276 lbs).
Service Intervals:
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Every 3,000 miles (5,000 km) under severe
conditions; up to 6,000 miles (10,000 km) under normal conditions with
recommended oil.
