The Chrysler EGG engine is a 60-degree V6,
single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 24-valve gasoline powerplant. With a
displacement of 3.5 liters, this engine was a cornerstone of Chrysler's
passenger car and crossover lineup from its introduction in the late
1990s through the 2000s. This engine is a member of Chrysler's "EG"
engine family. Production versions utilize an aluminum cylinder block
with cast-in iron liners and aluminum cylinder heads.
The EGG is an interference engine design. A defining characteristic is
its timing belt drive system, which also drives the water pump. The
engine was engineered for longitudinal mounting in rear-wheel-drive and
all-wheel-drive applications, as well as transverse mounting in
front-wheel-drive applications. It delivers smooth power and respectable
torque, though its design presents specific maintenance considerations.
The engine's construction emphasizes lightweight materials and compact
packaging.
Engine Type: 60-degree V6, liquid-cooled, four-stroke gasoline engine.
Bore: 96.0 mm (3.78 in).
Stroke: 81.0 mm (3.19 in).
Displacement: 3518 cc (214.6 cu.in).
Compression Ratio: 9.9:1.
Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6.
Cylinder Numbering: Left bank (cylinders 1-3-5) is the rear bank on
longitudinal engines; cylinder 1 is at the front of this bank. Right
bank (cylinders 2-4-6) is the front bank on longitudinal engines.
Engine Rotation (viewed from the front): Clockwise.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 87 pump octane minimum.
Power Output: 247 Hp at 6400 RPM to 255 Hp at 6500 RPM (183-189 kW),
depending on application and model year.
Torque Output: 250 lb-ft at 4000 RPM to 258 lb-ft at 4000 RPM, depending
on application and model year. Oil Pressure (at operating temperature):
25-80 psi at 2000 RPM (minimum 4 psi at idle).
The cylinder block is a high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy. It
employs cast-in, pressed-fit gray iron cylinder liners. The block is a
closed-deck design for increased strength and rigidity. It incorporates
a deep skirt that extends below the crankshaft centerline. The
crankshaft is a nodular iron casting with four main bearings.
Connecting rods are forged steel with fracture-split powdered metal
caps. Pistons are hypereutectic aluminum alloy with a full-floating
piston pin retained by spiral locks. Each piston uses two low-tension
compression rings and a three-piece oil control ring.
Each cylinder bank is equipped with a separate aluminum alloy cylinder
head. Each head employs a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) operating four
valves per cylinder via roller-rocker arms. The rocker arms pivot on
stationary shafts and incorporate hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating
manual valve clearance adjustment.
The combustion chamber is a pent-roof design. The camshafts are driven
by a single, multi-ribbed timing belt. The left and right bank camshafts
are not directly linked; each is driven independently by the timing belt
from the crankshaft sprocket.
Valve Arrangement: SOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (24 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 35.0 mm (1.378 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 30.0 mm (1.181 in).
Intake Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.217 in).
Exhaust Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.217 in).
Valve Lift (Intake): 7.6 mm (0.299 in).
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 7.6 mm (0.299 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): Hydraulic lash adjusters; no manual adjustment.
Camshaft Drive: Single, multi-ribbed timing belt. Belt also drives the
water pump.
The fuel system is a sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection
(SFI) system. The system is a returnless design on most applications.
Primary components include an in-tank electric fuel pump, a
chassis-mounted fuel filter, a tubular steel fuel rail, and six
injectors. Fuel pressure is regulated by a diaphragm-type pressure
regulator, which is either mounted on the fuel rail or integrated into
the fuel pump module. The engine uses a drive-by-wire electronic
throttle control (ETC) system on later models.
Fuel Injection Type: Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI).
Fuel Pressure (at rail, static): 55 psi (379 kPa) with key on/engine off
for returnless systems.
Fuel Injector Flow Rate: 180-190 cc/min at 43.5 psi, depending on model
year.
Fuel Injector Resistance: 11.5-13.5 ohms.
Throttle Body Bore Diameter: 55 mm (2.17 in) to 60 mm (2.36 in)
depending on application.
Idle Air Control: Early models use a stepper motor; later drive-by-wire
systems control idle via the electronic throttle body.
Idle Speed (base, in neutral): 650 ± 50 RPM.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design with a
gear-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted inside the front engine
cover and is driven directly by the crankshaft. The system incorporates
a screw-on, disposable full-flow oil filter mounted remotely on the
cylinder block.
Oil is drawn from a baffled aluminum sump, pressurized, sent through the
filter, and then directed to the main oil gallery. A design
characteristic involves oil galley passages that can be prone to sludge
accumulation if maintenance is neglected. The system feeds the
crankshaft main and rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and hydraulic lash
adjusters. A pressure relief valve is located in the oil pump housing.
Oil Pump Type: Gerotor-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 5.0 US quarts (4.7 liters).
Oil Capacity (dry fill): 6.0 US quarts (5.7 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow, remote mount.
Relief Valve Opening Pressure: 55-65 psi (379-448 kPa).
Oil Type (recommended): API certified SM or later, 5W-30 viscosity.
The cooling system is a pressurized, pump-driven system with an aluminum
crossflow radiator. A critical design feature is the timing belt-driven
water pump. The water pump is mounted on the front of the engine and is
driven by the same multi-ribbed belt that drives the camshafts.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant temperature, opening at
approximately 195°F (91°C). Coolant circulates from the pump through the
block and cylinder heads. A known design element is a coolant crossover
pipe, often constructed of plastic, located beneath the intake manifold;
this component can become brittle and leak. The system includes a
plastic coolant recovery reservoir.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, pump-driven, with thermostatic
control.
Coolant Capacity: 12.0 US quarts (11.4 liters).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 195°F (91°C).
Radiator Cap Pressure Rating: 16 psi (110 kPa).
Water Pump Drive: Timing belt.
The ignition system is a distributorless waste-spark system. The system
uses three separate ignition coils, each coil firing two spark plugs
simultaneously (one cylinder on compression stroke, its paired cylinder
on exhaust stroke).
The Engine Control Module (ECM) triggers the coils based on signals from
the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensors. Spark plug
gap is 1.0 mm (0.039 in). Recommended spark plug type is platinum.
The engine is equipped with comprehensive emission controls. These
include a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system that has been
noted for potential inadequate crankcase ventilation under certain
conditions, an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, a charcoal
canister for evaporative emissions (EVAP) control, and pre-catalyst and
main three-way catalytic converters. The system uses heated oxygen
sensors (HO2S) before and after the catalytic converters.
Overall Length: 660 mm (26.0 in).
Overall Width: 710 mm (28.0 in).
Overall Height: 680 mm (26.8 in).
Approximate Dry Weight: 175 kg (386 lbs).
Service Intervals:
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Every 3,000 miles (5,000 km) under severe
conditions; up to 6,000 miles (10,000 km) under normal conditions.
Adherence to this schedule is critical to prevent oil sludge issues.
