The Chrysler ERB Pentastar is a 60-degree V6,
double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 24-valve gasoline engine. This
3.6-liter powerplant represents a clean-sheet design, serving as the
cornerstone V6 engine for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), now
Stellantis, from its launch in 2010. The Pentastar family replaced
multiple older V6 designs across the corporate lineup. The ERB variant
is a high-feature, all-aluminum engine constructed with a deep-skirt
cylinder block and separate aluminum ladder frame for exceptional
bottom-end rigidity.
It is an interference engine design. The engine employs variable valve
timing (VVT) on all four camshafts and a two-stage variable intake
manifold. The Pentastar was engineered for flexibility, used in
longitudinal rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and transverse
front-wheel-drive applications. It delivers a strong balance of power,
fuel efficiency, and refinement, with an emphasis on reduced internal
friction and advanced thermal management.
Engine Type: 60-degree V6, liquid-cooled, four-stroke gasoline engine.
Bore: 96.0 mm (3.78 in).
Stroke: 83.0 mm (3.27 in).
Displacement: 3604 cc (219.9 cu.in).
Compression Ratio: 10.2:1 (early variants) to 11.3:1 (later PUG/PUG HP
variants).
Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6.
Cylinder Numbering: Left bank (cylinders 1-3-5) is the front bank on
transverse engines; cylinder 1 is at the accessory drive end. Right bank
(cylinders 2-4-6) is the rear bank on transverse engines.
Engine Rotation (viewed from the front): Clockwise.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded regular gasoline, 87 pump octane minimum (89
recommended for optimal performance).
Power Output: Ranges from 283 Hp at 6400 RPM to 305 Hp at 6350 RPM
(210-225 kW), depending on application and revision.
Torque Output: Ranges from 260 lb-ft at 4800 RPM to 268 lb-ft at 4350
RPM, depending on application and revision.
Oil Pressure (at operating temperature): 30-45 psi at 2000 RPM (minimum
6 psi at idle).
The cylinder block is a high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy with
cast-in, high-silicon aluminum cylinder bore liners. This parent
aluminum bore design utilizes a proprietary plating process for
durability and reduced friction. The block is a deep-skirt design that
extends well below the crankshaft centerline. It is complemented by a
one-piece cast aluminum structural oil pan/ladder frame that bolts to
the block's lower flange, providing exceptional main bearing cap
stability and overall engine stiffness.
The crankshaft is a forged steel unit with four main bearings.
Connecting rods are powdered metal with fracture-split caps. Pistons are
aluminum alloy with a low-friction polymer coating on the skirts. Piston
pins are full-floating and retained by spiral locks.
Each cylinder bank is equipped with a separate aluminum alloy cylinder
head employing dual overhead camshafts (DOHC). The cylinder heads
feature a compact pent-roof combustion chamber with centrally located
spark plugs. Each camshaft incorporates independent,
oil-pressure-actuated variable valve timing (VVT). The intake camshafts
provide up to 50 degrees of phasing authority, while the exhaust
camshafts provide up to 40 degrees.
The valvetrain uses direct-acting mechanical bucket tappets with shims
for valve clearance adjustment, located under the camshafts. The
camshafts are driven by a two-stage silent chain system with hydraulic
tensioners.
Valve Arrangement: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (24 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 35.8 mm (1.409 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 30.0 mm (1.181 in).
Intake Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.197 in).
Exhaust Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.197 in).
Valve Lift (Intake): 11.2 mm (0.441 in).
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 10.4 mm (0.409 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): Mechanical buckets with select-fit shims.
Clearance is 0.20-0.28 mm (0.008-0.011 in) for intake, 0.25-0.33 mm
(0.010-0.013 in) for exhaust, checked cold.
Camshaft Drive: Two-stage silent chain with hydraulic tensioners and
guides.
The fuel system is a direct-injection, sequential fuel injection (DSFI)
system on all current production versions. Earlier port-injected
variants exist but are superseded. The high-pressure direct injection
system operates at pressures up to 2200 psi (150 bar).
Primary components include a camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump
mounted on the left cylinder head, engine-mounted fuel rails, and six
solenoid-type injectors. A returnless low-pressure circuit with an
in-tank electric pump supplies the high-pressure pump. The system
employs a drive-by-wire electronic throttle control (ETC).
Fuel Injection Type: Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI).
High-Pressure Fuel Pump Pressure: Up to 2200 psi (150 bar).
Low-Pressure Supply Pressure: 55-65 psi (379-448 kPa).
Injector Type: Solenoid-activated, multi-hole.
Throttle Body Bore Diameter: 65 mm (2.56 in) to 75 mm (2.95 in)
depending on application.
Idle Speed Control: Managed entirely by the electronic throttle body and
engine control module.
Idle Speed (base, in neutral): 600 ± 50 RPM.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, variable-displacement design
with a vane-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted to the front of the
block and is chain-driven from the crankshaft. Its variable displacement
is controlled by engine oil pressure and engine speed to reduce
parasitic loss. The system uses a screw-on, disposable full-flow oil
filter mounted on the left side of the block.
Oil is drawn from the structural aluminum oil pan, pressurized,
filtered, and distributed through main galleries in the block and
cylinder heads. A dedicated oil spray jet cools the underside of each
piston. Oil passages feed the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings,
camshaft phasers, camshaft journals, and chain tensioners.
Oil Pump Type: Variable-displacement vane-type, chain-driven.
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 5.5 US quarts (5.2 liters).
Oil Capacity (dry fill): 6.0 US quarts (5.7 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow.
Oil Type (recommended): API certified SN PLUS or SP, 5W-30 viscosity
meeting FCA Material Standard MS-6395.
Oil Change Interval (normal service): Up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or
12 months as indicated by the Oil Life Monitoring System.
The cooling system is a pressurized, dual-circuit, pump-driven system
with an aluminum crossflow radiator. A belt-driven, centrifugal water
pump provides circulation. The system employs a dual-pass cooling
strategy. During warm-up, coolant circulates through the cylinder heads
and heater core first to bring the combustion chambers and valvetrain to
optimal temperature rapidly, then opens to the cylinder block circuit.
This strategy reduces warm-up time, emissions, and fuel consumption. A
wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow. An electric auxiliary
coolant pump may be present on some applications for post-shutdown
cooling of the turbocharger (if equipped) or for cabin heater
performance.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, pump-driven, dual-pass with
thermostatic control.
Coolant Capacity: 10.0 US quarts (9.5 liters) - varies by application.
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 203°F (95°C).
Radiator Cap Pressure Rating: 21 psi (145 kPa).
Water Pump Drive: Serpentine accessory belt.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based HOAT (Hybrid Organic Additive
Technology) coolant, specifically meeting FCA Material Standard
MS-12106.

A two-stage variable-length intake manifold is employed on many
applications. An intake manifold runner control (IMRC) valve switches
between long, low-RPM runners for torque and short, high-RPM runners for
power.
The exhaust manifolds are integrated into the cylinder heads as a "log"
style design, reducing weight and complexity. Later high-performance PUG
HP variants may feature a dual-path intake and revised exhaust
manifolds.
The ignition system is a coil-on-plug (COP) design. Six individual
ignition coils mount directly atop each spark plug. The Engine Control
Module (ECM) provides individual coil control based on inputs from the
crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensors, knock sensors,
and other parameters. The system uses iridium-tipped spark plugs with a
service life up to 100,000 miles (160,000 km).
Overall Length: 690 mm (27.2 in).
Overall Width: 720 mm (28.3 in).
Overall Height: 710 mm (28.0 in).
Approximate Dry Weight: 168 kg (370 lbs).
Service Intervals:
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Follow the instrument cluster Oil Life
Monitoring System. Under normal driving, intervals approach 10,000 miles
(16,000 km). Severe service dictates more frequent changes, such as
every 5,000 miles (8,000 km).
Spark Plugs: Replace every 100,000 miles (160,000 km) for iridium plugs.
