The Volvo B4164T is a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder,
turbocharged and intercooled gasoline engine, developed as part of a
collaborative effort between Volvo and Ford under the "GTDi" (Gasoline
Turbocharged Direct Injection) nomenclature. This powerplant was a key
component in Volvo's T4 and T5 badged models of the early 2010s,
representing the brand's adoption of downsized, forced-induction
technology for improved efficiency and specific output. It features an
all-aluminum construction, dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with variable
valve timing on the intake cam, direct fuel injection, and a single
turbocharger.
The B4164T is engineered to deliver strong mid-range torque and
competitive power from a compact displacement, focusing on drivability
and reduced fuel consumption. While sharing its fundamental architecture
with Ford's EcoBoost 1.6L, Volvo's calibration and integration emphasize
smooth power delivery and refinement. This engine marked Volvo's
transition towards widespread turbocharging across its model range,
though its complex direct injection system introduced characteristic
maintenance challenges such as intake valve carbon buildup.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, transverse-mounted, liquid-cooled,
turbocharged and intercooled, gasoline direct injection (GTDi).

Fuel Requirement: Premium unleaded gasoline, 95 RON (91 AKI) minimum.
Emission Standards Compliance: Euro 5 / US LEV II.
Material: Aluminum alloy with cast-in iron cylinder liners. This design
reduces overall weight while maintaining cylinder bore durability.
Construction: Open-deck design. The crankshaft is supported by five main
bearings. The block is designed for compact packaging in transverse
applications.

direct injection combustion process. Pistons are oil-jet cooled.
Connecting Rods: Powdered metal connecting rods with fracture-split big
end caps.
Material: Aluminum alloy.
Head Construction: Dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16-valve design (4
valves per cylinder). The camshafts are driven by a timing chain.
Valve Arrangement: Pent-roof combustion chamber. Valves are actuated via
roller-finger followers with hydraulic lash adjusters, providing
maintenance-free valve operation. This is an interference engine.
Variable Valve Timing: Intake camshaft only, utilizing a vane-type
phaser (VVT).
Valve Diameters: Intake: 30.0 mm / 1.181 in. Exhaust: 26.0 mm / 1.024
in.
Injection Type: Direct fuel injection. High-pressure fuel is injected
directly into the combustion chamber.
Engine Management: Bosch MED 17 or Siemens engine control unit (ECU).
Fuel Delivery: A camshaft-driven, high-pressure mechanical fuel pump
(HPFP) supplies the fuel rail. An electric in-tank lift pump provides
feed pressure.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Common rail system with solenoid-activated,
side-mounted direct injectors. Operating pressure reaches 150 bar.
Turbocharger: Single, water-cooled turbocharger (e.g., BorgWarner K03 or
similar).
Intercooler: Air-to-air intercooler.
Throttle Body: Electronically controlled (drive-by-wire) throttle body.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a variable displacement
oil pump.
Oil Pump: Vane-type, variable displacement pump driven by the
crankshaft, optimizing pressure for reduced parasitic loss. Oil Filter:
Cartridge-type, mounted on the top or side of the engine.
Oil Cooler: Not standard on all applications.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 4.3 L / 4.5 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: Full synthetic engine oil meeting Volvo oil
standard VCC RBS0-2AE or ACEA A5/B5. Viscosity: 0W-30 or 5W-30.
Operating Oil Pressure: 1.5 bar at hot idle, 2.5 - 3.5 bar at 2000 rpm.
Imperial: 22 psi (idle), 36 - 51 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, dual-circuit system. Includes an auxiliary electric
pump for turbocharger after-run cooling. Water Pump: Centrifugal pump,
driven by the accessory serpentine belt.
Thermostat: Map-controlled thermostat for precise temperature
management.
Coolant Capacity: 6.5 L / 6.9 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: Volvo-specific coolant meeting VCS specification.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. High-output alternator.
Ignition System: Coil-on-plug (COP) individual ignition coils.
Engine Management: Bosch MED 17 or Siemens ECU as stated. The system
uses a hot-film mass air flow (MAF) sensor and two knock sensors.
Crankcase Ventilation: Closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
system with an integrated oil separator. Exhaust Gas Recirculation
(EGR): Cooled EGR system for emissions reduction.
Overall Length: 500 mm / 19.7 in.
Overall Width: 650 mm / 25.6 in.
Overall Height: 600 mm / 23.6 in.
Dry Weight: 110 kg / 243 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Every 15,000 km or 12 months (as per Volvo's
LongLife service schedule). Shorter intervals of 10,000 km (6,200 miles)
are often recommended. Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Fuel Filter
Change: Integrated with the in-tank fuel pump module; replacement is not
a regular service item. Air Filter Change: Every 60,000 km (37,300
miles) or as inspected.
Timing Chain Service: Officially a "lifetime" component, but the chain,
guides, and tensioner require inspection for wear and stretch at high
mileage (beyond 150,000 km / 93,000 miles). Spark Plug Replacement:
Specified long-life iridium spark plugs require replacement every 60,000
km (37,300 miles).
Coolant Replacement: Every 120,000 km (74,600 miles) or 8 years. Carbon
Cleaning: A necessary high-mileage service. Walnut shell blasting of
intake valves to remove carbon deposits is required every 80,000 -
100,000 km (50,000 - 62,000 miles) due to direct injection. PCV System:
The PCV diaphragm is a known wear item; inspection is recommended around
100,000 km (62,000 miles).
