The Caterpillar 3056E is a modern,
electronically controlled, inline six-cylinder diesel engine designed
for construction machinery, industrial equipment, agricultural machines,
and power-generation units. As an evolution of the mechanical 3056, the
3056E incorporates advanced electronic fuel management, precise
emissions control, improved turbocharging, and enhanced diagnostics
through Caterpillar’s ADEM system. Its combination of mechanical
durability and electronic precision allows it to provide strong
mid-range torque, excellent fuel efficiency, and dependable performance
in demanding environments.
Built with a robust cast-iron block, high-strength rotating components,
and a fully integrated electronic control module, the 3056E meets
emissions standards while maintaining the reliability expected from
Caterpillar engines. Operators value the engine for its serviceability,
long overhaul life, and consistent performance under continuous heavy
load.
The Caterpillar 3056E is a four-stroke, water-cooled, direct-injection
inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is approximately
6.0 liters (366 cubic inches). Bore is 100 mm (3.94 in), and stroke is
127 mm (5.00 in). Compression ratio typically ranges from 17.0:1 to
18.0:1 depending on emissions package and configuration.
Power ratings vary by application:
– Industrial and construction versions: 100–175 hp (75–130 kW) at
2,200–2,400 rpm
– Agricultural and off-road machines: 110–160 hp (82–119 kW) at
2,200–2,400 rpm
– Generator-drive versions: 80–150 hp (60–112 kW) at 1,800–2,200 rpm
Peak torque typically ranges between: 450 and 650 Nm (332–479 lb-ft) at
1,400–1,600 rpm. Idle speed is approximately 750–850 rpm. Maximum
governed speed is 2,200–2,400 rpm. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is forged steel, fully counterweighted, supported by
seven main bearings. Pistons are aluminum-alloy with reinforced crowns
and combustion bowls optimized for direct injection. Rings include two
compression rings and one oil-control ring. The camshaft is gear-driven,
ensuring long-term timing accuracy.
The block is cast iron with thick walls for vibration control and
longevity. It includes deep reinforcing ribs and a stiff crankcase
structure capable of supporting heavy-cylinder pressures under
turbocharged operation. Coolant passages surround each cylinder for
uniform temperature control.
The head is cast iron with direct-injection combustion chambers and four
valves per cylinder—two intake and two exhaust—for improved breathing
and emissions control. Hardened valve seats provide durability.
Typical valve lash (cold):
– Intake: 0.20–0.25 mm (0.008–0.010 in)
– Exhaust: 0.30–0.35 mm (0.012–0.014 in).
The Caterpillar 3056E uses an electronically controlled fuel system
managed by the ADEM ECM. Fuel is supplied by a lift pump through dual
filters, then delivered to electronically actuated injectors. Injection
pressures exceed 1,000 bar under high-load conditions.
Fuel-system maintenance:
– Change filters every 250–300 hours
– Drain water separator as needed
– Inspect injectors at major intervals
– Keep oil clean for proper injector function.
The lubrication system is a high-capacity wet-sump configuration with a
gear-driven oil pump. Oil flows through a full-flow filter before
entering the main gallery.
Oil capacity typically: 13–16 liters (13.7–16.9 qt)
Normal oil pressure: 300–420 kPa (44–61 psi)
Idle pressure: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi).
Cooling is handled by a centrifugal water pump circulating coolant
through block, head, and aftercooler (if equipped). Thermostat begins
opening at 82°C (180°F) and is fully open at 95°C (203°F). Cooling
capacity typically: 20–25 liters (21–26 qt).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air filtration varies by application:
– Construction: dual-stage dry filters
– Industrial: cyclone or oil-bath filters
– Agricultural: heavy-duty housings
Turbocharging increases air density and torque. Some versions include
air-to-air aftercooling.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
Available in 12- or 24-volt configurations. ECM monitors boost pressure,
oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel temp, intake temperature, and
crankshaft position. Alternators: 45–90 amps. Starters: 3–5 kW.
Depending on application, the engine supports:
– PTO drives
– Hydraulic pumps
– Air compressors
– Remote cooling systems
– Generator heads.
Approximate dimensions:
– Length: 1,050–1,150 mm (41–45 in)
– Width: 720–800 mm (28–31 in)
– Height: 950–1,050 mm (37–41 in)
Dry weight: 520–650 kg (1,146–1,433 lb).
– Oil and filter: 250 hours
– Fuel filters: 250–300 hours
– Air filters: inspect 50 hours
– Coolant: replace every 2 years
– Valve lash: every 1,000 hours
