The Caterpillar C1.5 is a compact,
fuel-efficient, and durable small-displacement diesel engine designed
for light construction machinery, compact agricultural equipment,
industrial power units, and generator sets. As part of Caterpillar’s
micro-engine lineup, the C1.5 balances simple mechanical reliability
with modern performance characteristics including strong low-speed
torque, low noise output, clean combustion, and ease of maintenance. The
engine's robust cast-iron construction, straightforward fuel-system
architecture, and long service intervals make it a popular choice for
OEMs and operators who depend on reliable continuous-duty operation in
tight installation spaces.
With displacement just under 1.5 liters, the C1.5 delivers impressive
operational stability and efficiency for equipment such as mini
excavators, compact generators, small mobile lifts, agricultural
sprayers, trench rollers, and industrial pumps. Its naturally aspirated
(NA) and turbocharged (T) versions enable flexible power configurations,
while its mechanical fuel system simplifies servicing and ensures
long-term durability even under demanding field conditions.
The Caterpillar C1.5 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline
three-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of approximately 1.496
liters (91.3 cubic inches). Bore is typically 84 mm (3.31 in), while
stroke is about 90 mm (3.50 in), producing a torque-optimized
long-stroke configuration ideal for low-speed pulling power. The block
and head are both cast iron for strength and excellent heat management.
Compression ratio varies by configuration:
— Naturally aspirated: 22:1 to 23:1
— Turbocharged: 19:1 to 20:1
Power ratings:
— Naturally aspirated versions: 18–26 hp (13–19 kW) at 2,200–2,800 rpm
— Turbocharged versions: 25–36 hp (19–27 kW)
— Generator-drive configurations: 10–30 kW @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque values typically range from: 60–95 Nm (44–70 lb-ft) at
1,400–1,800 rpm. Idle speed: 900–1,000 rpm. Maximum governed speed:
2,400–2,800 rpm. Firing order: 1-2-3.
The crankshaft is forged steel and supported by three main bearings.
Pistons are cast-aluminum alloy with combustion bowls optimized for
direct injection. Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable
bearing inserts. The camshaft is gear-driven from the crankshaft to
maintain long-term timing accuracy with minimal maintenance.
The cylinder block is cast iron with parent-bore cylinders, providing
excellent strength, heat dissipation, and rebuildability. Structural
ribbing minimizes vibration and enhances durability during long-duty
operation. Coolant passages fully surround each cylinder to maintain
stable operating temperatures, supporting longevity and reduced thermal
fatigue.
The cylinder head is cast iron with direct-injection combustion chambers
and features two valves per cylinder—one intake and one exhaust. The
valvetrain uses rocker arms actuated by pushrods from the gear-driven
camshaft. Valve seats are hardened for long service life under
continuous high-temperature operation.
Typical cold valve lash:
— Intake: 0.15–0.20 mm (0.006–0.008 in)
— Exhaust: 0.25–0.30 mm (0.010–0.012 in).
The C1.5 uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system. The system
consists of a mechanical lift pump, dual-stage filtration (water
separator + fine filter), and an inline or rotary mechanical injection
pump feeding mechanical injectors.
Common features:
— Injection pressures: ~200–350 bar
— Simple mechanical governor
— High reliability and low maintenance requirements
Fuel-system service:
— Replace filters every 250–300 hr
— Drain water separator daily
— Service injectors every 1,000–1,500 hr
— Check injection-pump timing at major service intervals.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design with a
gear-driven oil pump. Oil is filtered through a full-flow replaceable
filter.
Oil pressure:
— Operating: 250–350 kPa (36–51 psi)
— Idle: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi)
Oil capacity: 4–5 liters (4.2–5.3 qt). Recommended oil grades: SAE
10W-30 or 15W-40 diesel oils (API CI-4, CJ-4, or CK-4). Oil change
interval: 250 hours.
Cooling is provided by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulating
coolant through the cast-iron block and head, radiator, and optional oil
coolers. A thermostat regulates coolant flow.
Thermostat characteristics:
— Opening: 82°C (180°F)
— Fully open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling-system capacity: 5–7 liters (5.3–7.4 qt)
Cooling-system pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake configuration varies by
application:
— Naturally aspirated
— Turbocharged (T variants)
Air filtration options:
— Single-stage dry filters
— Dual-stage filtration for dusty environments
— Cyclone pre-cleaners (agriculture and construction)
Turbocharged versions offer improved torque and higher altitude
capability.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron, built to withstand repeated thermal
expansion cycles.
