The Ford 4CC engine is a robust,
medium-displacement, four-cylinder diesel engine developed by Ford Motor
Company for light commercial vehicles, industrial equipment, and utility
applications. Designed during Ford’s era of mechanically governed diesel
powerplants, the 4CC emphasizes durability, torque delivery,
serviceability, and long operational life rather than high specific
output. The engine is known for its simple mechanical fuel system,
strong cast-iron construction, and tolerance of harsh operating
conditions, making it suitable for fleets, agricultural use, and
off-road or stationary applications.
The 4CC belongs to Ford’s family of indirect-injection and early
direct-injection industrial diesel engines. It is characterized by a
conservative design philosophy, thick cylinder walls, a forged
crankshaft, gear- or belt-driven timing (depending on variant), and
minimal electronic dependency. These characteristics make the engine
easy to maintain in regions with limited diagnostic equipment and
variable fuel quality. When serviced correctly, the 4CC is capable of
extremely high service mileage or operating hours with minimal major
overhaul.
Engine type: Four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder diesel
engine
Combustion system: Indirect injection (IDI) or early direct injection
(variant dependent)
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
Displacement: approximately 2.5 liters (152 cubic inches)
Number of cylinders: 4
Cylinder arrangement: In-line
Firing order: 1-3-4-2
Rotation: Clockwise viewed from front
Governing: Mechanical centrifugal governor
Bore: 93.7 mm (3.69 in)
Stroke: 90.5 mm (3.57 in)
Compression ratio: approximately 21.5:1
Rated power output: 68-76 hp (51-57 kW) at 3,800-4,000 rpm
Maximum torque: 150-165 Nm (111-122 lb-ft) at approximately 2,000-2,200
rpm
Idle speed: 750 ± 50 rpm
Maximum governed speed: approximately 4,200 rpm
The engine’s square-to-slightly oversquare geometry provides balanced
characteristics, allowing reasonable high-speed operation while
maintaining strong mid-range torque. The long compression stroke and
high compression ratio support efficient combustion and reliable cold
starting.
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-grade cast iron with deep
skirts and substantial ribbing to resist distortion under load. The
block incorporates replaceable wet or semi-wet cylinder liners depending
on production version. These liners are precision-machined and sealed
with synthetic rubber O-rings at the lower section to prevent coolant
leakage into the crankcase.
Main bearing saddles are integrally cast and line-bored for accuracy.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings, each fitted with
steel-backed, tri-metal bearing shells. Thrust washers are located at
the center main bearing to control crankshaft end float. Oil galleries
are cast internally, distributing pressurized oil to the main bearings,
camshaft bearings, and valve train. External oil passages are minimized
to reduce leak points and improve durability.
The cylinder head is a heavy-duty cast-iron unit designed for thermal
stability and long service life. Combustion chambers are of the
pre-combustion (swirl chamber) type for IDI variants, promoting smooth
combustion and reduced diesel knock. Valves are arranged in an overhead
valve (OHV) configuration with one intake and one exhaust valve per
cylinder.
Valve diameters:
Intake valve: approximately 38 mm (1.50 in)
Exhaust valve: approximately 33 mm (1.30 in)
Valves are manufactured from heat-resistant alloy steel. Exhaust valves
are often stellite-faced for improved wear resistance. Valve seats are
replaceable inserts interference-fitted into the cylinder head. Valve
actuation is via a block-mounted camshaft operating tappets, pushrods,
and rocker arms. Valve lash is manually adjustable using
screw-and-locknut adjusters on the rocker arms.
Valve clearances (cold):
Intake: 0.30 mm (0.012 in)
Exhaust: 0.35 mm (0.014 in)
The camshaft is forged steel or chilled cast iron, mounted low in the
block. Drive is via a timing belt or gear train depending on variant and
application. Belt-driven versions utilize a reinforced toothed belt with
an automatic or semi-automatic tensioner. Timing belt replacement
interval: 80,000-100,000 km (50,000-60,000 miles). Timing gears, where
fitted, are hardened steel and provide lifetime service under normal
conditions. The timing system also drives the mechanical fuel injection
pump and oil pump.
The Ford 4CC employs a fully mechanical fuel system designed for
reliability and simplicity. Fuel is delivered from the tank by a
mechanical lift pump to a primary sedimenter and then through a fine
paper fuel filter before reaching the injection pump.
Injection pump type: Inline or rotary mechanical pump (CAV/Lucas or
Bosch type depending on market). Injection pressure: Approximately
140-180 bar (2,030-2,610 psi). Injectors are pintle-type with multi-hole
nozzles. Injection timing is mechanically set and adjustable during
servicing. Excess fuel is returned to the tank through a calibrated
return line. Recommended fuel: Automotive diesel fuel with cetane rating
45 or higher.
Fuel system maintenance:
Fuel filter replacement: every 15,000-20,000 km (9,000-12,000 miles)
Injector inspection: every 40,000-60,000 km (25,000-37,000 miles)
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design. A gear-type
oil pump driven by the camshaft or crankshaft draws oil from the sump
through a mesh strainer.
Oil is delivered to:
Main bearings
Connecting rod bearings
Camshaft bearings
Valve train components
Piston cooling galleries (where equipped)
Oil pressure:
Idle: 80-120 kPa (12-17 psi)
At 3,000 rpm: 300-450 kPa (44-65 psi)
Oil capacity (with filter): Approximately 6.5 liters (6.9 US quarts, 5.7
Imp quarts)
Recommended oil: SAE 15W-40 diesel-rated oil (API CF or higher)
Oil change interval: Every 7,500-10,000 km (4,500-6,000 miles) or 250
operating hours
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced-circulation liquid system. A
belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block,
head, radiator, and heater circuit.
Thermostat:
Opening temperature: 82°C (180°F)
Fully open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling system capacity: Approximately 9.0 liters (9.5 US quarts, 7.9
Imp quarts)
System pressure: 70-90 kPa (10-13 psi)
Recommended coolant: 50/50 ethylene glycol antifreeze and distilled
water
Coolant replacement interval: Every 30,000 km (18,600 miles) or 2 years
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake uses a dry-type paper filter housed in a steel or plastic air
cleaner. Some industrial versions employ oil-bath or cyclone
pre-cleaners for dusty environments.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron, designed for durability and uniform
exhaust gas flow. Naturally aspirated versions route exhaust directly to
a muffler or vertical stack depending on application.
