General Technical Data
The Caterpillar 3064T is a turbocharged, robust
four-cylinder diesel engine engineered for compact construction
machinery, industrial equipment, and agricultural machines requiring
strong low-end torque, high durability, and dependable performance under
continuous duty. As part of the 3064 engine family, the 3064T represents
the turbocharged enhancement of the base naturally aspirated version,
delivering superior power density, improved fuel economy, and better
altitude performance. It is widely used in CAT skid-steer loaders,
compact excavators, small dozers, generators, and hydraulic power units.
Built around a sturdy cast-iron block, direct injection, and a
gear-driven valvetrain, the 3064T maintains the traditional reliability
associated with Caterpillar mid-bore industrial engines. Its
turbocharging and efficient combustion design enable it to provide long
service intervals, smooth operation, and strong pulling power across a
broad RPM range even in demanding industrial environments.
The Caterpillar 3064T is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged
inline four-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is 4.2 liters
(259 cubic inches) depending on production series. Bore is approximately
94 mm (3.70 in), and stroke is about 120 mm (4.72 in), forming a
long-stroke configuration ideal for torque-heavy applications.
Compression ratio is typically between 17.0:1 and 18.0:1.
Power output
depends on application:
– Industrial and construction: 60–95 hp (45–71 kW) at 2,200–2,500 rpm
– Agricultural: 55–90 hp (41–67 kW)
– Generator-drive units: 30–65 kW standby at 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque typically ranges from: 220–300 Nm (162–221 lb-ft) at
1,400–1,800 rpm. Idle speed is normally 850–950 rpm. Maximum governed
speed is 2,400–2,600 rpm. Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The crankshaft is forged steel with five main bearings. Pistons are cast
aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns and machined direct-injection
bowls. Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable inserts. The
gear-driven camshaft provides precise timing and long-term durability.
The block is cast iron with parent-bore cylinders, deep structural ribs,
and a reinforced skirt. The coolant passages fully surround the
cylinders for uniform temperature regulation. The block includes
integrated mounting bosses for hydraulic pumps, alternators, air
compressors, and PTO-driven equipment.
The cylinder head is cast iron and features direct-injection combustion
chambers. Most configurations use two valves per cylinder—one intake and
one exhaust—although some versions incorporate improved porting for
better airflow. Rocker arms and pushrods operate the valves from the
gear-driven camshaft.
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.25–0.30 mm (0.010–0.012 in)
– Exhaust: 0.30–0.35 mm (0.012–0.014 in).
Fuel System
The 3064T uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system. Fuel is supplied by a mechanical lift pump and filtered through primary and secondary fuel filters before reaching the high-pressure mechanical injection pump.
Injectors atomize fuel directly
into the piston combustion bowl.
Injection pressures: 250–350 bar.
Fuel-system components include:
– Lift pump
– Water separator
– Fine paper-element filter
– Inline or rotary injection pump
– Mechanical injectors
Fuel-system service:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hours
– Drain water separator routinely
– Service injectors every 1,000–1,500 hours
– Check injection pump timing during overhauls.
Lubrication System
A wet-sump, full-pressure lubrication system is used. A gear-driven oil
pump delivers oil through a full-flow filter before distributing it to
bearings, camshaft, rocker assemblies, and the turbocharger.
Oil capacity: 7–9 liters (7.4–9.5 qt)
Operating oil pressure: 300–450 kPa (44–65 psi)
Idle oil pressure: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi)
Recommended oil: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 (API CI-4 or higher).
Cooling System
Cooling is provided by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulating
coolant through the block, head, and radiator. A thermostat regulates
temperature.
Thermostat:
– Opening: 82°C (180°F)
– Fully open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling capacity: 9–12 liters (9.5–12.7 qt)
Cooling system pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
Intake and Exhaust Systems
Turbocharging provides increased air density and torque.
Air intake systems vary by machine:
– Construction: dual-stage dry filters
– Agriculture: cyclone pre-cleaners
– Stationary engines: enclosed industrial canisters
Some versions use air-to-air aftercooling. Exhaust manifolds are cast
iron and designed for long-term thermal cycling durability.
Electrical and Starting Systems
Available in 12- or 24-volt configurations.
Components:
– Alternator: 40–90 amps
– Starter motor: 2.5–4.0 kW
– Sensors: coolant temperature, oil pressure, speed/tachometer pickups.
Other Systems
The engine supports:
– Hydraulic pump drives
– PTO systems
– Air compressors
– Generator heads
– Belt-driven industrial accessories.
Dimensions and Weight
Engine dimensions:
– Length: 700–800 mm (27.6–31.5 in)
– Width: 550–650 mm (21.7–25.6 in)
– Height: 700–850 mm (27.6–33.5 in)
