General Technical Data
The Honda J30AC engine is a 3.0-liter V6, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine engineered for smooth performance, refined operation, and long-term durability. Part of Honda’s J-series engine family, it was produced for select regional applications requiring strong low and mid-range torque, reliable operating characteristics, and minimal maintenance cost.
The engine uses an aluminum cylinder block with
cast-in iron cylinder liners for strength, along with aluminum cylinder
heads to ensure effective heat dissipation. The engine configuration
includes a 60-degree V6 layout for optimal balance. It is known for
stable idle quality, quiet mechanical operation, and consistent
performance over high mileage. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The J30AC engine displaces 2997 cc (2.997 liters / 182.9 cubic inches).
Bore is 86.0 mm (3.39 inches) and stroke is 86.0 mm (3.39 inches),
forming a square design that balances torque and high-RPM breathing
characteristics. Compression ratio typically averages around 9.4 to 1.
Power output ranges from 190 to 205 horsepower (142 to 153 kW / 193 to
207 PS) depending on calibration, achieved around 5500 rpm.
Torque output ranges between 187 and 195 lb-ft
(254 to 264 Nm) near 4500 rpm. Idle speed is usually set between 650 and
700 rpm. The crankshaft is supported by four main bearings, contributing
to rigid rotational stability. Lightweight aluminum pistons use a
three-ring configuration, and forged steel connecting rods provide
strength under continuous load.
The aluminum engine block houses cast-in iron cylinder liners to provide
wear resistance and structural stability. Integrated oil passages and
coolant channels ensure uniform lubrication and cooling. The crankshaft
rotates within four main bearings and drives the oil pump and camshaft
timing system. The block also contains mounting structures for accessory
systems, including alternator, power steering pump, and air-conditioning
components.
The aluminum alloy cylinder heads use a single overhead camshaft layout
for each cylinder bank. The valvetrain includes four valves per
cylinder, operated through rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters.
Intake and exhaust ports are engineered to deliver efficient airflow.
Combustion chamber geometry is designed for clean combustion, good
mixture motion, and controlled emissions. Valve seat inserts and guide
materials provide durability over extended service life.
Fuel System
Fuel is delivered through a multi-point programmed fuel injection system. An electric in-tank fuel pump supplies fuel through a filter to the high-pressure fuel rail. Solenoid-type injectors meter fuel into each intake port. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 350 kPa (51 lbs per square inch).
The engine control unit adjusts pulse width and injection timing using inputs from the throttle position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, intake air temperature sensor, coolant temperature sensor, oxygen sensors, and crank-angle sensor. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91 to 92 RON).
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump arrangement using a crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump. Oil is routed through a pickup screen and full-flow filter before passing through the main oil gallery to lubricate main bearings, connecting rods, camshaft journals, and valvetrain components.
Oil capacity ranges from 4.5 to 5.0 liters (4.8 to 5.3 US quarts). Recommended viscosity includes SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on operating environment. Normal oil pressure at cruising speed is approximately 300 to 450 kPa (44 to 65 psi).
Cooling System
Cooling is handled by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulating coolant through the block, heads, radiator, heater core, and bypass passages. Thermostat opening temperature is approximately 82 C (180 degrees F) with full opening at about 95 C (203 degrees F).
Cooling system capacity ranges from 7.0 to 7.5 liters (7.4 to 7.9 US quarts). Radiator cap pressure ranges from 88 to 108 kPa. Recommended coolant mixture is 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent distilled water.
Other Systems
The engine includes a positive crankcase ventilation system, evaporative emissions controls, and exhaust gas recirculation depending on market requirements. The ignition system is distributorless with coil packs or coil-on-plug configurations depending on variant. Spark plug gap is approximately 1.1 mm (0.043 inches). Alternator output ranges from 90 to 110 amperes. System voltage is 12 volts.
Dimensions and Weight
Overall engine length ranges from 680 to 710 mm (26.8 to 28.0 inches). Width is approximately 650 to 690 mm (25.6 to 27.2 inches). Height ranges from 700 to 740 mm (27.6 to 29.1 inches). Dry weight averages 155 to 175 kg (342 to 386 lbs) depending on configuration.
Maintenance Data
Maintenance intervals include oil changes every 5000 to 7500 km (3000 to 4500 miles), air filter replacement every 20,000 km (12,400 miles), fuel filter every 40,000 km (25,000 miles), coolant every 40,000 km or two years, and spark plugs every 20,000 to 40,000 km.
Valve clearance inspection is recommended every 40,000 to 50,000 km. Timing-belt replacement is required every 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles).
