The Volvo Penta D8-600 is a high-performance
variant of the 7.7-liter D8 series, representing the flagship offering
within this displacement family. This in-line 6-cylinder marine diesel
engine employs a unique dual-charging system that combines a twin-entry
turbocharger with a mechanical supercharger, delivering substantial
torque at low engine speeds and sustained power at the top end.
Introduced in 2016 as a gap-filler between the D6 (435 hp) and D11 (725
hp) models, the D8-600 was engineered for high-speed planing hulls
including motor yachts, sport cruisers, and performance craft in the
45-55 foot range. The engine operates within Volvo Penta’s fully
integrated Electronic Vessel Control system, supporting joystick
docking, dynamic positioning, and Glass Cockpit integration. Certified
to EPA Tier 3 and EU RCD Stage II emission standards, this power unit
delivers 600 hp with reduced CO2 output and improved fuel efficiency
compared to preceding models.
The D8-600 follows a compact inline 6-cylinder architecture optimized
for power density and weight reduction. The engine achieves its output
through a combination of common-rail fuel injection and a sequential
charging system.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with an integrated
ladder frame design that enhances structural rigidity and minimizes
vibration transmission to the hull. The ladder frame bolts to the main
bearing caps, creating a reinforced lower crankcase section that
supports the drop-forged crankshaft.
The crankshaft features induction-hardened bearing surfaces and fillet
radii for enhanced fatigue resistance under sustained high-load marine
operation. Replaceable dry-type cylinder liners prevent coolant leakage
into the combustion chamber while allowing in-chassis overhaul without
block replacement. Five main bearings support the crankshaft, each with
individual oil feed passages drilled within the block casting.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron unit featuring a single
overhead camshaft (SOHC) arrangement operating 24 valves total (4 valves
per cylinder). The cross-flow port design positions intake ducts on one
side and exhaust ducts on the opposite side, optimizing air movement
through the cylinder head. Roller rocker arms transfer camshaft lobe
motion to the valve stems, reducing friction compared to sliding finger
followers.
Valve seats are replaceable pressed-in inserts manufactured from
wear-resistant alloy. Valve guides are precision-fitted and available as
service components. The overhead camshaft design eliminates pushrods,
reducing reciprocating mass and improving valve train stability at the
3000 rpm rated speed.
The fuel system is an electronically controlled common-rail direct
injection system operating at high injection pressures. A gear-driven
high-pressure fuel pump supplies fuel to a common accumulator rail
mounted on the cylinder head. From the rail, fuel is distributed to
solenoid-type injectors controlled by the Engine Control Unit. The ECU
manages injection timing, duration, and multiple injection events
including pilot and main injections.
Pilot injection reduces combustion noise, a key feature for marine
applications where on-board comfort is prioritized. A single spin-on
fuel filter with integral water separation protects the injection
system. The system is compatible with diesel fuel and HVO (Hydrotreated
Vegetable Oil). Excess fuel returns to the tank through a cooling
circuit.
The lubrication system is a pressurized wet-sump configuration. A
gear-type oil pump driven from the crankshaft draws oil through a
strainer and passes it through a full-flow spin-on filter. The main oil
gallery distributes lubricant to the crankshaft main bearings,
connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and rocker shaft assembly.
Cast-aluminum pistons feature internal oil galleries that receive
pressurized oil jets for cooling, maintaining piston crown temperatures
under continuous high-load operation. A seawater-cooled tubular oil
cooler maintains oil temperature within operational limits. The oil pan
is constructed from fabricated steel.
Total Oil Capacity (including filter): 29.5 L (7.8 gal / 31.2 qt)
Oil Pressure at Rated Speed: 400-500 kPa (58-72 psi)
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40 or SAE 5W-30 meeting Volvo Penta VDS-4
or VDS-5
The cooling system operates as a freshwater closed-loop configuration
with a seawater-cooled tubular heat exchanger. Coolant circulates
through the cylinder block and cylinder head, absorbing combustion heat,
then passes through the heat exchanger where seawater absorbs the
thermal energy before discharge overboard. The thermostat, rated at
82-88°C (180-190°F), regulates coolant flow to maintain stable operating
temperature.
A seawater impeller pump, driven by the front accessory belt, supplies
raw water for both the heat exchanger and the charge air cooler. The
charge air cooler is seawater-cooled, reducing intake air temperature
after the turbocharger compression stage. A coolant expansion tank
accommodates thermal volume changes.
Coolant Capacity (engine only): 15.0 L (15.9 qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82°C (180°F)
Maximum Coolant Temperature (normal operation): 95°C (203°F)
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: Dry-type replaceable paper element air cleaner with a
restriction indicator. The sequential charging system comprises a
mechanical supercharger for low-speed response (below approximately 1500
