The Volvo Penta TAD1341GE is a
high-performance, in-line 6-cylinder, 12.78-liter diesel engine designed
exclusively for power generation applications. Manufactured by Volvo
Penta in Skovde, Sweden, this engine belongs to the TAD134xGE series and
is engineered for dual-speed operation at both 1500 rpm for 50 Hz power
and 1800 rpm for 60 Hz power.
The TAD1341GE features a turbocharged aspiration system with an
air-to-air charge air cooler, electronically controlled high-pressure
unit injectors (EUI), and the Volvo EMS 2 engine management system. This
engine configuration delivers exceptional load acceptance
characteristics, low noise levels, and reduced fuel and oil consumption
compared to previous generation power generation engines. The robust
cast iron construction with wet, replaceable cylinder liners ensures a
time between overhauls of 40,000 operating hours under rated conditions.
The Volvo Penta TAD 1341 GE is a 4-stroke, inline 6-cylinder diesel
engine designed for continuous stationary power generation. The engine
architecture follows a conventional inline configuration with an even
firing interval of 120 degrees. The bore and stroke relationship is
undersquare with a stroke significantly exceeding bore, promoting high
torque at the governed operating speeds of 1500 and 1800 rpm required
for generator synchronization. The engine features direct injection
combustion with a compression ratio optimized for generator load
acceptance.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast iron with a
deep-skirt design that extends the cylinder walls below the crankshaft
centerline, providing the rigidity required for sustained generator
operation at full load. The block incorporates replaceable wet-type
cylinder liners, allowing full engine rebuilds to original
specifications without block machining. Each wet liner contacts engine
coolant directly on its external surface, providing superior heat
transfer from the combustion zone to the cooling system.
The block contains seven main bearing bulkheads with reinforced ribbing
to support the forged steel crankshaft. The cylinder configuration is an
inline 6-cylinder layout designated as 6LTI. Cast-in water jackets
surround each cylinder liner with a directed coolant flow pattern to
maintain uniform cylinder temperatures under continuous full-load
operation. The crankcase incorporates a cast oil sump mounting flange
with a gasket sealing surface.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron and employs a
four-valves-per-cylinder configuration across all TAD1341GE variants.
The four-valve cylinder head design delivers superior airflow for
generator load acceptance and transient response. The valves are
arranged with two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder positioned
symmetrically around the centrally located electronic unit injector. The
cross-flow design places the intake manifold on one side of the cylinder
head and the exhaust manifold on the opposite side, keeping intake air
cooler and improving volumetric efficiency.
The valve actuation system consists of an overhead camshaft, roller
followers, and forged steel rocker arms. The overhead camshaft design
reduces valvetrain mass and improves high-speed stability at governed
operating speeds. Valve seats and guides are pressed into the head
casting and are replaceable during major overhaul. The cylinder head
gasket is a multi-layer steel design capable of sealing combustion
pressures generated by turbocharged operation.
Valves per Cylinder: 4 (2 intake, 2 exhaust)
Total Valves: 24
Valve Arrangement: Overhead camshaft (OHC), cross-flow
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
The fuel system employs an electronically controlled high-pressure unit
injector (EUI) system manufactured by Delphi. Each cylinder has a
dedicated unit injector actuated by the overhead camshaft. The EMS 2
engine control unit controls injection timing and duration by regulating
a solenoid valve on each injector. A gear-driven low-pressure transfer
pump draws fuel from the tank and supplies it to the unit injectors
through internal passages in the cylinder head.
A fuel filter with integral water separator and water-in-fuel sensor is
mounted on the engine or chassis frame. The system includes a fuel
cooler to maintain stable fuel temperatures under continuous generator
operation. The EMS 2 adjusts injection parameters based on engine speed,
load, coolant temperature, intake air temperature, boost pressure, and
barometric pressure.
Fuel Type: Diesel (specific heat capacity 42.7 MJ/kg, density 0.84 kg/L)
Injection System: Electronic unit injector (EUI), Delphi
Injection Technology: Direct injection (DI-UI)
Low-Pressure Fuel Pump: Gear-type, camshaft-driven
Fuel Filter: Full-flow with water separator and water-in-fuel sensor
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, forced-feed design with a
gear-type oil pump driven from the engine timing gear train. The pump
draws oil from the sump through a submerged strainer and delivers it
under pressure to full-flow spin-on oil filters mounted on the engine
block. A bypass valve allows oil flow to the bearings if a filter
becomes restricted. Filtered oil is routed through a main oil gallery
machined into the cylinder block. Cross-drilled passages direct oil to
the seven main bearings.
Drilled passages in the crankshaft feed oil from each main bearing to
the adjacent connecting rod bearings. A full-flow plate-type oil cooler
using engine coolant stabilizes oil temperature under continuous
generator load. The system includes an oil pressure relief valve that
maintains operating pressure between 35 and 55 psi at rated speed. An
oil pressure sensor provides input to the EMS for monitoring and
shutdown functions. The oil pan is constructed from fabricated steel
with internal baffles.
Oil Type: Diesel engine oil meeting Volvo Penta specifications
Total Oil Capacity: 36 L (9.5 US gal)
Oil Consumption at 100% Load: 0.04 L per hour
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on, full-flow, disposable
Oil Cooler Type: Plate-type, engine-mounted, coolant-cooled
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced-circulation design with a
centrifugal water pump driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley.
Coolant is circulated through the cylinder block water jacket, around
the wet cylinder liners, and upward into the cylinder head. The charge
air cooler (intercooler) is an air-to-air type mounted separately from
the engine cooling system. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates engine
coolant flow to the radiator, with a thermostat design providing minimal
flow resistance.
An optional electronically controlled viscous fan is available for
generator set installations to reduce noise and fuel consumption under
partial load conditions. A coolant filter is installed in the cooling
system to remove contaminants and provide supplemental coolant additive
(SCA) release for liner cavitation protection. A coolant recovery tank
maintains system fill level.
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol antifreeze with supplemental coolant
additives
Engine and Radiator Coolant Capacity: 44 L (11.6 US gal)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-88 °C (180-190 °F)
Charge Air Cooler Type: Air-to-air
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, belt-driven
Coolant Filter: Full-flow with SCA dispenser
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Air enters through a heavy-duty dry-type air cleaner with
a restriction indicator sensor monitored by the EMS. A turbocharger
restriction sensor detects air cleaner element loading. Air then passes
through the turbocharger compressor housing. Compressed air flows
through the air-to-air charge air cooler before entering the intake
manifold. A boost pressure sensor and intake air temperature sensor
provide input to the EMS for fuel system control.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a single-piece cast iron unit
with six ports merging into a single outlet positioned for turbocharger
mounting. The engine is designed for industrial exhaust system
installation with an industrial-grade muffler. The TAD1341GE is not
equipped with exhaust aftertreatment systems including SCR (selective
catalytic reduction), EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), or DPF (diesel
particulate filter). Emission compliance is achieved through internal
engine measures and the EUI fuel system.
| Electrical and Electronic Systems |
0The engine is equipped with the Volvo EMS 2 engine management system
providing comprehensive monitoring, protection, and diagnostics. The EMS
2 includes engine speed governing, fuel system control, and generator
set integration. A standard SAE J1939 CAN bus interface allows
communication with generator set controllers, remote monitoring systems,
and parallel operation equipment.
The system monitors the following sensors: oil pressure, boost pressure,
fuel pressure, intake air temperature, oil temperature, coolant
temperature, fuel temperature, water-in-fuel, air filter restriction,
and two independent engine speed sensors. The EMS provides alarm and
automatic shutdown functions for critical faults. Electrical System
Specifications: System Voltage: 24V standard , Alternator Output: 80A,
Starter Motor Power: 7 kW, Minimum Starting Temperature: -15 °C (5 °F)

The TAD 1341 GE utilizes a fixed geometry turbocharger with a wastegate
mounted directly to the exhaust manifold. The wastegate controls maximum
boost pressure to prevent turbocharger over-speed at high-altitude or
cold ambient conditions. The turbocharger is oil-cooled and water-cooled
for durability under continuous generator operation. A boost pressure
sensor and exhaust gas temperature sensor are installed for engine
protection.
