The John Deere 6076T is a 7.6-liter,
turbocharged, in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine from the Series 400
family. Produced from the early 1980s through the late 1990s, this
engine represents the transition from naturally aspirated farm engines
to forced-induction power units. The "T" designation indicates a
turbocharger without an aftercooler, distinguishing it from later "HT"
(high torque) and "HFT" (high flow turbo) variants. This engine is a
mechanical-injection powerhouse known for its durability, high torque
rise, and serviceability in field conditions.
The 6076T was designed for intermittent heavy-duty cycles in
agricultural tractors, combines, and industrial equipment. It uses a
long-stroke configuration with a bore of 115.9 mm (4.56 in) and a stroke
of 120.7 mm (4.75 in), promoting high low-speed torque essential for
drawbar work. The engine employs replaceable wet cylinder liners, a
deep-skirt cast iron block, and a mechanical fuel injection system
either from Stanadyne (rotary pump) or Bosch (in-line pump).
Operators value this engine for its mechanical simplicity, absence of
electronic controls, and a torque rise of 20-25% that permits lugging
through heavy loads without downshifting. The 6076T remains popular in
the used equipment market for repowering older machinery and for
stationary industrial applications due to its robust construction and
parts availability.
The John Deere 6076T is a 4-stroke, compression-ignition, in-line
6-cylinder diesel engine. The engine is turbocharged without an
aftercooler. Total displacement is 7,645 cm3 (466 cu.in). The bore and
stroke dimensions are 115.9 mm x 120.7 mm (4.56 in x 4.75 in). This
long-stroke, undersquare design provides high piston speed for increased
low-end torque.
The compression ratio is 15.5:1, reduced from naturally aspirated
versions to control peak cylinder pressures under boost. The firing
order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, standard for in-line 6-cylinder engines. Rotation,
when viewed facing the flywheel, is counter-clockwise (CCW). The engine
is governed for intermittent duty cycles characteristic of agricultural
tractors and combines.
Rated Power (Agricultural, intermittent): 104-130 kW (140-175 hp) @
2,200 rpm
Rated Power (Industrial, continuous): 112-149 kW (150-200 hp) @ 2,200
rpm
Peak Torque: 650-720 Nm (480-530 lb-ft) @ 1,500 rpm

Rated Engine Speed: 2,200 rpm
Low Idle Speed: 800-850 rpm (adjustable via mechanical governor)
High Idle Speed (no load, governed): 2,420-2,450 rpm
Governor Type: Mechanical, centrifugal flyweight (variable speed)
The cylinder block is a one-piece, deep-skirt cast iron design. The deep
skirt extends below the crankshaft centerline, providing a rigid lower
crankcase that reduces bore distortion under high cylinder pressures
generated by turbocharging (approximately 120 bar / 1,740 psi). The
block features 7 main bearing supports, with each cap secured by two
bolts. The block incorporates cast-in water jackets that surround each
cylinder completely.
A defining feature is the use of replaceable wet cylinder liners. These
liners are centrifugally cast from high-chromium iron for wear
resistance. The flange at the top deck provides the sealing surface for
the cylinder head gasket. Each liner is sealed at the bottom with three
O-rings (two for coolant, one for oil) to prevent cross-contamination
between cooling and lubricating circuits. This wet liner design permits
in-frame overhaul without removing the engine from the chassis. The
crankshaft is forged from micro-alloy steel with induction-hardened
journal surfaces. Connecting rods are forged steel, machined as matched
sets.
Number of Main Bearings: 7
Main Bearing Journal Diameter: 90.0 mm (3.54 in).
Connecting Rod Length (center-to-center): 210.0 mm (8.27 in).
Piston Type: Aluminum alloy with a steel ring carrier for the top
compression ring.
Piston Cooling: Oil spray jets (piston cooling nozzles) aimed at the
underside of each piston crown.
The cylinder head is a single, reverse-flow cast iron casting spanning
all 6 cylinders. The reverse-flow design positions intake and exhaust
valves on the same side of the cylinder head (right side when viewed
from the flywheel). This configuration simplifies manifold packaging in
narrow engine compartments but creates a cross-flow limitation compared
to later designs. The valvetrain uses a camshaft located in the cylinder
block, actuating valves via mechanical lifters (tappets), pushrods, and
rocker arms. This cam-in-block arrangement is durable and easily
serviceable.
Each cylinder has two valves: one intake and one exhaust (12 valves
total). The combustion chamber is a direct-injection, bowl-in-piston
design. The cylinder head contains hardened valve seat inserts for both
intake and exhaust valves, pressed into the aluminum or cast iron head
depending on production year. Valve guides are replaceable sintered
iron. Valve lash adjustment is mechanical, performed via a setscrew and
locknut on each rocker arm. This requires periodic adjustment.
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valve, cam-in-block, pushrod actuated, 2 per
cylinder
Intake Valve Diameter: 51.0 mm (2.01 in)
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 44.5 mm (1.75 in)
Valve Lift (intake and exhaust): 11.5 mm (0.453 in)
Camshaft Drive: Gear train from the crankshaft (front-mounted,
helical-cut gears)
The fuel system uses mechanical injection without electronic control.
Two pump configurations exist depending on serial number and
application. Early models (serial numbers below 500,000) and some
agricultural tractors use a Stanadyne DB4 or DB6 rotary distributor
pump. This pump is compact and uses a single pumping plunger to
distribute fuel to each cylinder. Later models and high-output
industrial versions use a Bosch P3000 or P7100 in-line pump with a
separate pumping element for each cylinder. Both systems are
mechanically governed.
A gear-type transfer pump draws fuel from the tank and supplies it to
the injection pump at 3.5 bar (50 psi). The injection pump pressurizes
fuel to 450-750 bar (6,500-10,900 psi) depending on pump type and engine
speed. High-pressure lines deliver fuel to mechanical nozzle-and-holder
injectors. Each injector opens at a preset pressure (pop pressure) of
200-220 bar (2,900-3,190 psi). Excess fuel returns to the tank through a
leak-off line. A manual primer pump is located on the fuel filter
housing for bleeding air after filter changes.
Injection Pressure (maximum, in-line pump): 750 bar (10,880 psi)
Injection Pressure (maximum, rotary pump): 550 bar (7,980 psi)
Injector Type: Mechanical, single-orifice or multi-orifice nozzle
Injector Pop Pressure (new): 200-220 bar (2,900-3,190 psi)
Fuel Filtration: Single or dual spin-on filters with water separator and
sediment bowl
Governor Type: Mechanical, variable speed with torque control
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, forced-feed design using a
gear-type oil pump. The pump is mounted externally on the right side of
the cylinder block and driven by a gear from the camshaft. Oil is drawn
from the sump through a wire mesh strainer, pressurized by the pump, and
then routed through a full-flow oil filter (spin-on, cellulose media).
A bypass valve opens at 2.1 bar (30 psi) differential pressure if the
filter becomes restricted. After filtration, oil is distributed to the
main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and rocker
arm shaft. Piston cooling nozzles (jets) receive oil from the main oil
gallery to cool the underside of each piston.
The engine is equipped with a plate-and-fin oil cooler mounted on the
left side of the block. The oil cooler uses engine coolant as the
cooling medium and is thermostatically controlled. A replaceable bypass
oil filter (depth media) is optional on some industrial configurations
for extended oil change intervals.
Oil Capacity (standard sump, with filter): 19.0 L (20.1 U.S. qt)
Oil Capacity (deep sump option): 24.6 L (26.0 U.S. qt)
Oil Pressure (rated speed, 2,200 rpm): 345 kPa (50 psi)
Oil Pressure (low idle, 800 rpm, hot): 105 kPa (15 psi) minimum
Recommended Oil Viscosity: SAE 15W-40 (API CC, CD, or CE rating)
Oil Change Interval (agricultural duty): 250-300 hours
Oil Pan Type: Stamped steel or fabricated steel with removable clean-out
plate
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled design with a
centrifugal water pump. The water pump is belt-driven from the
crankshaft pulley and uses a sealed ball bearing and a carbon-ceramic
face seal. Coolant flows from the lower radiator tank into the pump,
then through the cylinder block water jackets, around the wet cylinder
liners, upward through the cylinder head, and out through the thermostat
housing. A separate coolant circuit serves the oil cooler. The cooling
system on turbocharged 6076T engines includes a coolant line to the
turbocharger center housing for bearing cooling.
The system incorporates a wax-pellet thermostat that begins opening at
82°C (180°F) and is fully open at 95°C (203°F). A bypass passage permits
coolant circulation through the block and head until the thermostat
opens. The radiator fan is direct-drive or viscous-drive, mounted on the
water pump pulley.
Coolant Capacity (engine only, no radiator): 15.1 L (16.0 U.S. qt).
Coolant Capacity (engine with standard radiator): 24.6-28.4 L (26-30
U.S. qt).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82°C (180°F).
Thermostat Fully Open Temperature: 95°C (203°F).
Radiator Cap Pressure: 70-100 kPa (10-15 psi).
Water Pump Flow Rate (at 2,200 rpm): 280 L/min (74 gal/min).
Coolant Type: Heavy-duty low-silicate ethylene glycol antifreeze mixed
50/50 with distilled water.
Air Intake and Turbocharging: The engine uses a single, fixed-geometry
turbocharger mounted on a cast iron exhaust manifold. The turbocharger
is either an Air Research (Garrett) T04 series or a Schwitzer S2 series,
depending on production date. Boost pressure at rated speed is 70-90 kPa
(10-13 psi). The turbocharger is wastegate-free; boost is controlled by
turbine housing size and engine load. An air-to-air aftercooler is not
present on the standard 6076T. The intake system includes a dry-type,
two-stage air cleaner with a restriction indicator. Late production
engines (serial numbers above 500,000) feature a revised front gear
train and an oil cooler with improved gasket retention.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a pulse-converted design with
grouped cylinder firing orders (1-2-3 and 4-5-6) to improve turbine
efficiency. The manifold is constructed from high-nickel ductile iron.
No exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or after-treatment system is present
on this pre-Tier 1 engine.
Electrical System: Available in 12-volt or 24-volt configurations. The
12-volt system uses a 3.5 kW (4.7 hp) starter motor and a 90 A
alternator. The 24-volt system uses two 12-volt batteries in series, a
7.0 kW (9.4 hp) starter, and a 120 A alternator. The starting system
includes a mechanical or magnetic disconnect switch.
Engine Control (Mechanical): No electronic control unit is present.
Engine governing is purely mechanical. The throttle lever connects to
the injection pump governor via a cable or linkage. The governor
maintains set speed regardless of load. An excess fuel button (on the
injection pump) provides additional fuel for cold starting.
