The Deutz TD2011L04i is a 4-cylinder,
turbocharged diesel engine distinguished by an integrated oil cooling
system that eliminates the need for a separate liquid coolant circuit.
This engine belongs to the 2011 family, a platform designed for compact
machinery where simplicity, cold-start performance, and corrosion
resistance are priorities.
The TD2011L04i uses direct injection with a pump-pipe-nozzle fuel
system, a configuration that separates the injection pump, high-pressure
line, and nozzle for each cylinder while maintaining mechanical
simplicity. The engine meets EU Stage IIIA / US EPA Tier 3 emission
standards. Applications include articulated loaders, skid-steer loaders,
compact excavators, and other off-highway equipment where the absence of
a radiator and coolant reduces maintenance requirements.
The Deutz TD2011L04i is a 4-cycle, oil-cooled, turbocharged, inline
4-cylinder diesel engine. The integrated oil cooling system circulates
engine oil through an internal oil cooler mounted on the engine block,
dissipating heat without a separate coolant circuit.

Idling Speed (High): 2350 rpm.
The crankcase is constructed from high-grade grey cast iron with a
monobloc configuration, meaning the cylinders and crankcase form a
single integrated casting. The block houses five main bearing supports
for the crankshaft. The integrated oil cooling system eliminates water
jackets within the block; instead, oil passages direct lubricant through
an internal oil cooler mounted on the engine block.
This design removes corrosion and cavitation risks associated with
liquid-cooled engines. All service points, including the oil dipstick,
oil filter, and fuel filter, are located on one side of the engine to
simplify maintenance access in confined machinery compartments. A
pressed steel oil pan bolts to the lower flange.
The cylinder head is a single-piece, grey cast iron block-type casting
covering all four cylinders. The overhead valve (OHV) configuration
places the camshaft within the cylinder block. Pushrods and rocker arms
actuate the valves. Two valves per cylinder (one intake, one exhaust)
produce a total of 8 valves. Valve seats are pressed into the head and
machined to precise angles.
Valve guides are press-fit. The valvetrain uses mechanical lash
adjusters (screw and locknut type) requiring periodic manual valve
clearance adjustment. Valve Clearance (cold engine): Intake: 0.30 mm
(0.012 in). Exhaust: 0.50 mm (0.020 in). The cylinder head gasket is a
composite construction with steel fire rings at each cylinder bore.
The fuel system is a direct injection design with a pump-pipe-nozzle
configuration. Individual injection pumps for each cylinder are
integrated into the crankcase, a design that eliminates an external
high-pressure distributor pump. A gear-type fuel lift pump draws fuel
from the tank through a primary fuel filter with a water separator.
High-pressure lines connect each injection pump to its corresponding
nozzle. The injection nozzle is a multi-hole type, providing optimized
fuel atomization directly into the piston combustion bowl. A mechanical
centrifugal governor is integrated into the injection pump assembly to
regulate engine speed. An optional electronic governor is available for
applications requiring enhanced control.
The lubrication system serves dual functions: lubricating moving
components and removing engine heat through the integrated oil cooling
system. A gear-type oil pump, driven from the crankshaft nose, draws oil
through a strainer from the oil sump. Oil passes through a full-flow
spin-on canister filter before distribution to the main bearings,
connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker shaft, and valve
tappets.
A portion of the oil flow is directed through an integrated oil cooler
mounted on the engine block. The oil cooler is a liquid-to-air type,
dissipating heat directly to the surrounding air or through a forced-air
fan depending on the application. A pressure regulating valve maintains
system pressure.
Total Oil Capacity (with filter): 11.5 L (12.1 qt).
Oil Pressure (warm engine, at rated speed): 276 to 414 kPa (40 to 60
psi).
Oil Pressure Switch Activation: 152 kPa (22 psi).
Oil Temperature Switch Activation: 135°C (275°F).
Oil Change Interval: Up to 1000 hours.
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40 (standard fill). For ambient
temperatures below -15°C (5°F), synthetic 5W-30 may be used. For
temperatures between -20°C and 40°C (-4°F to 104°F), SAE 10W-40 is
suitable.
The Deutz TD2011L04i does not use a conventional liquid cooling system
with a radiator and coolant. The engine is oil-cooled using an
integrated oil cooler mounted on the engine block. Engine oil circulates
through the oil cooler, which transfers heat to the surrounding air or
to a forced-air stream from an engine-driven fan. This design eliminates
coolant-related maintenance including freeze protection, coolant
replacement, water pump replacement, and corrosion prevention.
The absence of a radiator reduces the engine's physical footprint and
weight. Cold-start performance is improved because oil does not freeze
at low temperatures. For applications requiring additional heat
rejection, an optional external oil cooler can be added to the system.
Electrical System: 12-volt or 24-volt negative ground, dependent on
application. A gear-reduction starter motor is standard. The engine does
not include a starter, alternator, or wiring harness in the basic
configuration; these components are added by the equipment manufacturer.
Engine Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor integrated into the
injection pump is standard. An optional electronic governor is available
for applications requiring remote speed control and diagnostics.
Air Intake System: Dry-type, two-stage paper element air cleaner with a
dust evacuation valve. The turbocharger draws air through the filter
before compressing it into the intake manifold.
Turbocharger: A fixed geometry turbocharger provides boost pressure. The
turbocharger is mounted on a single-entry exhaust manifold.
Exhaust System: Single exhaust manifold with outlet flange sized for
flexible exhaust piping. A muffler is standard for most applications.
Cold Start Aid: The engine exhibits best cold starting properties even
under extreme conditions due to the oil-cooled design. An intake air
heater (grid heater or flame-start type) is optional for ambient
temperatures below -10°C (14°F).
PTO Drive: An optional PTO (power take-off) drive is available from the
front gear train, reducing installation costs for hydraulic pump
applications.
Dry Weight: 250 kg (550 lb) depending on configuration.
Overall Length: 710 mm (28.0 in).
Overall Width: 530 mm (20.9 in).
Overall Height: 713 mm (28.1 in).
Oil Change Interval: 500 to 1000 hours for industrial duty under normal
operating conditions. Reduce to 250 hours for severe conditions
including dusty environments, sustained high ambient temperatures above
30°C (86°F), or operation with fuel sulfur content above 0.5%. Oil
Filter Replacement: At every oil change. Use a spin-on canister type
element. Oil Capacity (with filter): 11.5 L (12.1 qt).
Fuel Filter Replacement: 500 hours or annually. Drain water separator
weekly in humid climates. Valve Clearance Inspection: 500 hours. Valve
Clearance (cold engine): Intake: 0.30 mm (0.012 in). Exhaust: 0.50 mm
(0.020 in). Injector Service Interval: Test spray pattern and opening
pressure at 1000 hours. Replace injectors at 2000 hours. Timing Gear
Train: The 2011 series uses a gear train for camshaft drive.

blockage at 500 hours. Clean with compressed air. Air Cleaner Service:
Replace primary element when restriction indicator shows 6.2 kPa.
Replace secondary safety element every third primary change.
