The Chrysler EXL engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6
diesel powerplant manufactured by VM Motori, belonging to the A 630 family. It
is distinguished by its use of a Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) cylinder block, a
material chosen for its exceptional strength and stiffness, which allows for a
lightweight and compact design without compromising durability.
This engine gained recognition for balancing high performance with fuel
efficiency, earning a place on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list. It was primarily
utilized in rear-wheel-drive platforms, serving as a premium diesel option for
various Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram vehicles, notably replacing previous
Mercedes-Benz-sourced diesel units in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Engine Type: 60-degree V6, 4-stroke diesel
Valvetrain: DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft), chain-driven, 4 valves per cylinder
with finger followers, totaling 24 valves.
Displacement: 2,987 cc (3.0 L; 182.3 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 83.0 mm x 92.0 mm (3.27 in x 3.62 in).
Compression Ratio: 16.5:1 (later high-output versions) to 18.0:1 (earlier
European specifications).
Aspiration: Single turbocharger with intercooler.
Fuel System: Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) with Bosch solenoid injectors,
capable of injection pressures up to 2,000 bar.
Performance Output (Standard): 218 hp (160 kW) at 3,800-4,000 rpm / 375 lb-ft
(510 Nm) at 1,600-2,800 rpm.
Performance Output (High-Output "Gen 3"): Up to 260 hp (194 kW) at 4,000 rpm /
480 lb-ft (651 Nm) at 1,800-2,800 rpm.
| Cylinder Block, Head, and Valves |
Cylinder Block: Constructed from Compacted Graphite
Iron (CGI) for high strength and reduced weight. The block features a stiffened
design with a CGI bedplate that serves as a rigid carrier for the crankshaft,
utilizing four-bolt main bearing caps.
Cylinder Head: Manufactured from aluminum alloy. Crankshaft: Forged steel,
externally balanced, with a length of 442.2 mm (17.41 in) to minimize packaging
requirements.
Connecting Rods: Cast iron, with a center-to-center length of 162.9 mm (6.41
in). Valves: Intake valves measure 28.0 mm (1.10 in) in diameter, while exhaust
valves measure 24.5 mm (0.96 in). Combustion chamber volume is 24.68 cc (1.51
cu.in).
Type: Common Rail Direct Injection with high-pressure
pump.
Injectors: Bosch solenoid-type injectors.
High-Pressure Pump: Bosch CP4.2 series pump.
Oil Pump: Rotary vane type.
Piston Cooling: Oil jets are integrated into the block to spray the underside of
the pistons for thermal management.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 9.5 liters (10.0 quarts) for most applications.
Recommended Oil: Fully synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-40 meeting Chrysler MS-11106 or
MS-12991 specifications, depending on the model year.
Crankcase Capacity: 7.7 liters (2.0 gallons).
Type: Liquid-cooled, with a water-cooled Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (EGR) cooler.
Coolant Capacity: 13.2 liters (14.0 quarts).
Emissions Control: The engine utilizes a Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF), a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), and Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) requiring Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection to meet
Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards.
Vacuum Pump: Integrated into one of the cylinder heads, driven by the camshaft.
Length: 695 mm (27.36 in), Width: 729 mm (28.70 in),
Height: 697.5 mm (27.46 in).
Weight: 220 kg (485 lbs) for the long block; fully dressed engine weight is 230
kg (507 lbs).
Oil Change Interval: Up to 16,000 km (10,000 mi) under
normal driving conditions; reduced intervals for severe duty. Fuel Filter
Replacement: Recommended every 30,000-40,000 km (18,000-25,000 mi).
Timing Drive: The engine utilizes a chain-driven valvetrain designed for the
life of the engine under normal conditions, requiring no regular replacement.
Coolant Change: 5 years or 160,000 km (100,000 mi), whichever comes first. Air
Filter Replacement: 30,000-50,000 km (18,000-30,000 mi).
Cylinder Head Bolts (M12): 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) + 90° +
90°.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts (Bedplate): 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) + 60° + 60°.
