The Hyundai D4HB, designated within the R-series engine
family and marketed as the 2.2 CRDi, is a 2.2-liter inline-4 turbocharged diesel
powerplant introduced in 2009. Developed as a high-performance diesel option for
Hyundai and Kia’s larger sport utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles, and
sedans, the D4HB represented a significant advancement over its D-series
predecessors.
The engine utilizes Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) for the cylinder block - a
material offering superior strength-to-weight ratio compared to conventional
gray iron - combined with a double overhead camshaft configuration and
piezoelectric common rail injection. This architecture enabled substantial
torque output from low engine speeds while meeting stringent Euro emissions
standards. The D4HB remained in production across multiple generations, with
continuous refinements to power output, fuel efficiency, and aftertreatment
systems.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, water-cooled, turbocharged diesel.
Displacement: 2,199 cc (134.2 cu.in).

Maximum Torque (Detuned variants): 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) @ 1,500-2,500 rpm.
Valvetrain Configuration: Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) operating 16 valves (4
valves per cylinder). The valvetrain incorporates direct-acting hydraulic lash
adjusters and roller finger followers, requiring no periodic manual valve
clearance adjustments. Camshafts are driven by a timing chain system with
automatic tensioning.
The cylinder block is constructed from Compacted
Graphite Iron (CGI), a material with 70-80% higher tensile strength and 40-50%
greater stiffness than conventional gray iron while maintaining comparable
weight characteristics. The CGI construction allows for reduced wall thickness
and lower overall engine mass without compromising structural rigidity under
high combustion pressures exceeding 180 bar (2,610 psi).
The block features a closed-deck design with deep-skirt architecture extending
below the crankshaft centerline, providing enhanced support for the main bearing
caps. Bore diameter measures 85.4 mm (3.36 in). The crankshaft is forged steel
with rolled fillets for improved fatigue resistance, supported by five main
bearings. Integrated within the block are oil galleries feeding six piston
cooling jets (one per cylinder) that operate continuously to manage thermal
loads.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and features a cross-flow design with dual overhead camshafts.
Valve Count: 16 total; 8 intake, 8 exhaust.
Intake Valve Diameter: 30.5 mm (1.20 in).
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 27.5 mm (1.08 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.20 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Valve Guides: Sintered iron guides with integrated sealing.
Valve Seat Inserts: Powder metal sintered alloy with a multi-angle seat geometry
optimized for swirl generation and thermal conductivity. Hydraulic Lash
Adjusters: Direct-acting units mounted in the cylinder head casting, operating
against the roller finger followers to maintain zero valve clearance throughout
the engine service life.
Camshafts: Hollow cast iron camshafts with induction-hardened lobes. The intake
camshaft incorporates a variable valve timing mechanism (CVVT - Continuously
Variable Valve Timing) on selected variants, providing optimized valve overlap
across the operating range. Glow Plugs: Ceramic glow plugs with rapid heating
capability, achieving 1,000 °C (1,832 °F) within 2 seconds for cold start
performance. Post-heating continues after start to reduce cold start emissions.
The D4HB employs a fourth-generation common rail direct
injection system operating at pressures up to 1,800 bar (26,107 psi). Fuel Rail:
Stainless steel common rail accumulator with internal damping characteristics to
reduce pressure pulsations.
High-Pressure Pump: CP4.2 type (radial piston pump with two pumping elements)
driven by a chain or gear drive from the crankshaft. The pump incorporates an
integral fuel metering valve to precisely control rail pressure.
Injectors: Piezoelectric injectors with eight-hole nozzles. Piezoelectric
actuation enables multiple injection events per combustion cycle - up to five
separate injections - including pilot, pre-main, main, post, and after-injection
events. Injector response times are under 0.15 milliseconds.
Fuel Filtration: Two-stage fuel filtration system incorporating a primary water
separator with water-in-fuel sensor and a secondary high-efficiency filter (3-5
micron rating). Rail Pressure: Idle pressure ranges from 300-400 bar
(4,351-5,802 psi); maximum pressure reaches 1,800 bar (26,107 psi) under full
load acceleration.
The lubrication system utilizes a variable displacement
oil pump to reduce parasitic losses and optimize oil flow based on engine
operating conditions. Oil Pump Type: Variable displacement vane-type pump
mounted to the front of the crankshaft. Oil pressure is regulated by the engine
control unit via a solenoid valve that adjusts the pump’s displacement. Oil
Capacity: 6.5-6.7 liters (6.9-7.1 qt) including oil filter replacement.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: 5W-30 or 5W-40.
Oil Quality Requirement: ACEA C3 (mid-SAPS) for vehicles equipped with a Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF); ACEA C2 for variants requiring lower high-temperature
high-shear (HTHS) viscosity. API classification is not applicable due to DPF
compatibility requirements.
Oil Pressure: At warm idle, pressure ranges from 1.2-1.8 bar (17-26 psi). Under
load, the variable displacement pump adjusts to maintain pressure between
3.5-5.0 bar (51-73 psi) based on engine speed and temperature. Oil Cooler:
Liquid-to-oil plate-type heat exchanger integrated into the oil filter housing,
utilizing engine coolant for thermal stabilization.
Piston Cooling Jets: Six solenoid-controlled piston cooling jets. The engine
control unit activates these jets above predetermined load and speed thresholds
to optimize oil flow and reduce parasitic drag during low-load operation.
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced circulation
design with a water pump driven by the timing chain or accessory belt, depending
on vehicle platform. Water Pump Type: Centrifugal pump with a die-cast aluminum
housing and stamped steel impeller. Thermostat: Wax-pellet type with integrated
housing. Opening temperature is 82-88 °C (180-190 °F). Full opening occurs at 95
°C (203 °F). System Pressure: Radiator cap rated at 1.1 bar (16 psi).
Coolant Capacity: 8.8-9.5 liters (9.3-10.0 qt) inclusive of engine block,
radiator, heater core, and oil cooler circuits. Coolant Specification: Phosphate
and silicate-free ethylene glycol-based coolant meeting Hyundai/Kia
specifications for aluminum and CGI compatibility.
Radiator: High-density aluminum cross-flow core with plastic end tanks. Cooling
fan configuration consists of dual brushless electric fans controlled by
pulse-width modulation (PWM) for variable speed operation based on coolant
temperature, charge air cooler requirements, and air conditioning system
pressure.
Aspiration System: Electronically managed Variable
Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) manufactured by BorgWarner or Mitsubishi. The
turbine housing features adjustable vanes controlled by an electric actuator
(replacing vacuum-actuated systems in later production years) to optimize
turbine inlet pressure across the engine speed range. Maximum boost pressure
ranges from 1.8-2.0 bar (26-29 psi) absolute.
Intercooler: Air-to-air charge air cooler integrated into the front-end cooling
module, reducing intake air temperature after compression by 40-60 °C (72-108
°F) under full load conditions.
Timing System: Maintenance-free timing chain system utilizing a single roller
chain driving both camshafts and the high-pressure fuel pump. The system
incorporates a hydraulic chain tensioner supplied by the engine lubrication
circuit and two fixed guide rails. The timing chain is intended for the engine
service life, though tensioner wear is monitored during routine maintenance.
Exhaust Aftertreatment: Variants are equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF) with integrated Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). Regeneration occurs
through post-injection fuel events. Later variants incorporate Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with AdBlue injection for Euro 6 emissions compliance.
Engine Management: Bosch EDC17 or Hyundai-sourced engine control unit managing
fuel injection, boost pressure, glow plug operation, variable oil pump control,
exhaust aftertreatment regeneration, and (where equipped) variable valve timing
and SCR dosing.
Crankcase Ventilation: Closed-loop system with integrated oil separator
(cyclonic and baffle combination) incorporated into the valve cover. Blow-by
gases are routed to the turbocharger compressor inlet through a heated hose to
prevent ice formation in cold climates.
Overall Length: 620 mm (24.4 in) measured from
accessory drive pulley face to transmission mounting flange.
Overall Width: 680 mm (26.8 in) inclusive of common rail fuel system, intake
manifold, and turbocharger assembly.
