The Audi CDNC is a high-output variant within the
second generation of the EA888 engine family, designated as the 2.0 TFSI.
Serving as the performance-focused counterpart to the CDNB, it was engineered
specifically for Audi’s longitudinal platform vehicles from 2008 to 2013. The
CDNC distinguished itself through a factory calibration that prioritized power
delivery, incorporating the Audi Valvelift System (AVS) on the exhaust camshaft.
This technology allowed for variable valve
lift, optimizing volumetric efficiency across the rev range. The result
was a turbocharged inline-four that balanced robust low-end torque with
a high specific output, becoming a cornerstone powertrain for the B8 A4,
first-generation A5, and original Q5 models.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron (GGG
40), a material choice retained to provide superior rigidity and bore stability
under high cylinder pressures generated by the turbocharging and direct
injection system. The block features an open-deck design to facilitate cooling
around the cylinders.
It incorporates a structural oil pan and a bedplate design - a lower crankcase
section that adds rigidity to the main bearing assembly. The cylinder bores are
not lined with sleeves; instead, they feature a honed surface treatment. The
engine mountings are positioned on the block to accommodate its longitudinal
orientation in the vehicle chassis.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and utilizes a cross-flow cooling design. It houses the dual overhead camshafts,
with the Audi Valvelift System (AVS) actuating the exhaust valves. AVS functions
through sliding cam lobes with differing profiles, switching between a low-lift
profile for fuel efficiency and a high-lift profile for maximum power.
The intake camshaft is equipped with a vane-type adjuster for continuous
variable timing. The valves themselves are arranged with a 26.0 mm (1.02 in)
intake diameter and a 22.0 mm (0.87 in) exhaust diameter. Valve stem seals are
designed for high-temperature durability. The cylinder head gasket is a
multi-layer steel (MLS) unit, providing a robust seal between the aluminum head
and iron block.
The CDNC engine employs a direct fuel injection system
known as FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection). A high-pressure fuel pump, driven by a
triple-lobe cam on the exhaust camshaft, generates fuel pressure up to 150 bar
(2175 psi). This pump delivers fuel to a common rail that supplies the four
solenoid injectors.
These injectors are mounted directly into the combustion chamber, allowing for
precise fuel metering and charge cooling. The engine management system operates
in two primary modes: homogeneous split mode during cold starts and high load
conditions, and homogeneous lean mode for normal operation. A low-pressure fuel
pump located in the fuel tank supplies the high-pressure pump.
The lubrication system is a full-flow pressure system
utilizing a gear-type oil pump. The pump is designed with a two-stage,
pressure-regulated mechanism to reduce parasitic losses; it operates at a lower
pressure during low-load conditions and switches to high pressure when
necessary.
Oil is drawn from a windage tray-integrated sump, passed through a full-flow
filter with an integrated check valve to prevent dry starts, and circulated
through the turbocharger bearing housing. The system capacity is 4.6 L (4.9 qt).
The engine requires oil meeting Volkswagen oil standards VW 502 00 or the
longer-life VW 504 00, with approved viscosities including 5W-30 and 5W-40
synthetic formulations.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-based
circuit with a total capacity of 8.0 L (8.5 qt). It features a map-controlled
thermostat, allowing the engine control unit to actively manage coolant
temperature for optimal performance and thermal efficiency.
A belt-driven coolant pump circulates the fluid through the cylinder block,
cylinder head, and the turbocharger core. The system includes a separate coolant
circuit for the oil cooler and the heater core. It requires Audi-approved G12++
or G13 coolant, distinguished by a pink or purple coloration, which uses
silicate and organic acid technology to protect the aluminum components and the
heater matrix.
The engine is equipped with a BorgWarner K03
turbocharger. It features an integrated wastegate actuator controlled by the
engine management system to regulate boost pressure, which is calibrated to
deliver the engine’s peak torque plateau from 1,500 rpm.
The engine utilizes a direct-acting coil-on-plug
system. Each cylinder has an individual pencil-style ignition coil mounted
directly over the spark plug. The spark plugs are NGK PFR7S8EG or equivalent,
with a factory-set electrode gap of 0.8 mm (0.031 in).
Exhaust System: A close-coupled catalytic converter is
integrated into the exhaust manifold to minimize light-off time and reduce
cold-start emissions. The system includes a primary oxygen sensor (pre-cat) and
a secondary oxygen sensor (post-cat) for monitoring catalyst efficiency.
Crankcase Ventilation: A complex integrated crankcase ventilation system is
housed within the cylinder head cover, incorporating a pressure regulating valve
and a cyclone oil separator to return oil to the sump while directing blow-by
gases into the intake tract.
