General Technical Data
The Mitsubishi 6A10 is a 1.6 liter V6 gasoline engine developed during the early 1990s as part of the Mitsubishi 6A engine family. It is one of the smallest production V6 engines of its period and was engineered to deliver smooth operation, compact packaging, and responsive performance in lightweight passenger cars.
The 6A10 uses an aluminum block, aluminum
cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank, and a 60
degree V6 layout to achieve refined running characteristics. The engine
was aimed at applications requiring a balance of performance and
efficiency in a compact design.
The 6A10 engine has a displacement of 1597 cc achieved through a bore of
73.0 mm and a stroke of 63.6 mm. This oversquare configuration allows
effective high rpm breathing and supports the sporty nature of the
engine. The block is cast aluminum with reinforced bulkheads and cross
bolting for rigidity.
The cylinder heads are aluminum alloy and feature dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder for a total of twenty four valves. The compression ratio is approximately 10.0 to 1 depending on the vehicle and model year. The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 and the crankshaft runs in six main bearings.
Power output ranges around 140 horsepower at approximately 7000 rpm and torque near 150 Nm at about 4500 rpm. Redline is about 7500 rpm. Idle speed is typically about 750 rpm. The engine uses lightweight pistons, forged connecting rods, and a balanced forged crankshaft to ensure smooth, high rpm operation.
Fuel System
The 6A10 uses electronic multi point fuel injection controlled by an engine control unit. Each cylinder is supplied by an injector located in the intake port. Fuel pressure is maintained by a regulator typically set around 300 kPa. An electric in tank pump provides fuel to the rail.
The ECU controls pulse width and timing based on throttle position, air flow, coolant temperature, oxygen sensor feedback, and engine speed. The system is designed for precise metering at high rpm and stable cold start behavior. Unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 95 RON or higher is recommended in performance oriented versions.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump type. A crankshaft driven trochoid pump draws oil from the sump and supplies it to all major bearing surfaces including main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, and valvetrain components. The oil filter is a spin on type located on the front side of the block. The system may include piston cooling jets depending on model.
Oil capacity is about 4.0 liters. Recommended oil viscosity is 5W-30 or 10W-30. Oil change interval is generally 10000 km under normal service. Maintaining clean oil is important for the high rpm valvetrain and camshaft lubrication passages.
Cooling System
The cooling system uses a belt driven water pump to circulate coolant through the block, heads, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat begins opening around 82 C and is fully open near 95 C. Cooling capacity is approximately 6 liters.
The radiator is aluminum with electric cooling fans for stable temperature control. Coolant replacement is recommended every 40000 km. A 50 50 mixture of antifreeze and water protects against corrosion and overheating.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The aluminum intake manifold uses tuned length runners for improved midrange torque. A cable operated throttle body meters incoming air. The air cleaner uses a paper element filter. Exhaust gases exit through cast iron exhaust manifolds that route flow to a catalytic converter.
The system is designed to reduce emissions while preserving high rpm breathing capability. Some versions use an exhaust gas recirculation system to control nitrogen oxide emissions.
Ignition and Electrical System
The ignition system uses either a distributor based design with a single coil or a distributorless ignition system on later versions. Ignition timing is controlled by the ECU. Spark plugs are generally gapped at about 1.0 millimeter and replaced every 30000 to 40000 km.
The electrical system uses a 12 volt alternator rated around 70 to 90 amps. The starter motor is a compact reduction gear unit. The engine block is grounded to the chassis at multiple points.
Valve Train and Timing Mechanism
The 6A10 uses a toothed timing belt to drive both intake and exhaust camshafts for each cylinder bank as well as the water pump. Camshafts act on valves through bucket type lifters. Belt replacement is recommended every 90000 to 100000 km including tensioner and idler pulley replacement.
Valve timing is fixed, and no variable valve timing is used in standard production models. Precision alignment marks on camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft pulley assist with service procedures.
Dimensions and Weight
The compact 60 degree V6 architecture provides minimal width and height. The dimensions are:Length 550 mm, Width 600 mm, Height 650 mm. Dry weight is approximately 150 kg depending on accessories. The aluminum construction keeps weight low and improves vehicle balance. The compact size allows installation in small engine bays used in Japanese domestic market vehicles.
