The Nissan QG16DE is a 1.6-liter, inline-four,
four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine belonging to Nissan’s
QG-series engine family. Introduced in the early 2000s, the QG16DE
powered a variety of compact Nissan passenger cars such as the Nissan
Sunny, Nissan Almera, Nissan Pulsar, Nissan Wingroad, and several
regional derivatives. The engine was designed around three core
principles: mechanical durability, fuel efficiency, and low emissions.
Built with a cast-iron block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head, the QG16DE
incorporates multi-point electronic fuel injection, coil-on-plug
ignition, hydraulic lifters, and a timing-chain valvetrain system. These
features reduce maintenance requirements and contribute to the engine’s
strong reputation for longevity.
Although the QG16DE is not intended for high-performance applications,
it delivers dependable mid-range torque and smooth operation suitable
for urban driving and light-load highway cruising. Its design focuses on
refined combustion, low friction, and long service intervals.
The engine’s ability to run reliably even under poor maintenance
conditions in some markets made it especially popular in fleet and taxi
service. The QG16DE remains a respected small-displacement powerplant
known for predictable operation and low ownership cost.
The QG16DE engine displaces approx. 1,597 cc (97.5 cu in). Bore is
approx. 76.0 mm (2.99 inches), and stroke is approx. 88.0 mm (3.46
inches), giving it a long-stroke configuration optimized for torque and
efficiency.
Compression ratio varies slightly by market but is 9.5:1. Maximum power
output is 105-110 hp (78-82 kW) at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 105-112
lb-ft (142-152 Nm) at approx. 4,000 rpm. Idle speed is approx. 700-750
rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Redline is generally around 6,500 rpm,
depending on vehicle variant.
The cast-iron block contributes to strength and stability. The
crankshaft is forged steel and rotates on five main bearings for long
life. Pistons are cast aluminum alloy with low-friction coatings.
Connecting rods are forged steel with full-floating wrist pins. The
bottom-end assembly is balanced for reduced vibration. Oil galleries are
carefully routed to supply consistent lubrication across the engine.
The QG16DE uses an aluminum double-overhead-camshaft (DOHC) cylinder
head with four valves per cylinder.
The valvetrain system includes:
- Chain-driven camshafts
- Roller rocker arms for reduced friction
- Hydraulic lash adjusters
- Timing-chain tensioner (oil-pressure assisted)
The combustion chamber is compact and shaped for efficient swirl and
tumble characteristics. Valve timing is optimized for strong mid-range
torque and emissions compliance. The timing chain is designed for engine
life and does not require scheduled replacement under normal operating
conditions.
The QG16DE uses a multi-point electronic fuel-injection (MPFI) system.
System components include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole fuel injectors
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Throttle body (electronic or cable-operated depending on model)
Fuel pressure operates around 43-50 psi (3.0-3.5 bar).
The ECM controls injection timing and pulse
width based on input from:
- Oxygen sensors
- Crank and cam position sensors
- Coolant temperature sensor
- Throttle-position sensor
- Intake-air temperature sensor
The MPFI system enhances fuel economy, improves throttle response, and
reduces emissions.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 3.3-3.6 liters (3.5-3.8 US qt)
- Operating oil pressure: 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; 15-20 psi at idle
- Recommended oil: 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic-blend or full-synthetic
A crankshaft-driven oil pump circulates oil through the block,
crankshaft bearings, camshaft journals, timing components, and
valvetrain. The QG16DE uses a full-flow spin-on oil filter. Maintaining
high-quality oil is important for prolonging timing-chain and
hydraulic-lifter life.
The QG16DE uses a liquid cooling system
consisting of:
- Belt-driven centrifugal water pump
- Radiator (aluminum core)
- Thermostat
- Electric cooling fans
- Coolant passages in head and block
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins to open at approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open at approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity: 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.8 US qt)
Proper coolant maintenance prevents overheating and head-gasket
deterioration.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system is designed to optimize torque and fuel efficiency.
Components include:
- Air-cleaner housing
- Replaceable paper air filter
- MAF sensor
- Long-runner plastic intake manifold
- Electronic throttle body
The intake manifold’s design promotes strong low-speed airflow and
steady mixture distribution.
The exhaust system includes:
- Cast or stainless-steel manifold
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Underfloor catalytic converter (region dependent)
- Oxygen sensors (pre- and post-catalyst)
- Exhaust piping and muffler
This system is designed to minimize emissions while maintaining adequate
exhaust scavenging.
The ignition system on the QG16DE is fully electronic and uses
coil-on-plug (COP) ignition modules.
Components include:
- Four individual ignition coils
- Platinum or iridium spark plugs
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
Spark timing is controlled by the ECM and adjusted for load, rpm, and
knock sensor feedback. Spark-plug gap measures approx. 0.9-1.1 mm
(0.035-0.043 inches).
- Length: 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
- Width: 600-630 mm (23.6-24.8 in)
- Height: 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
Dry weight: 115-130 kg (253-287 lb) depending on accessories
Recommended intervals:
- Oil and filter: every 5,000-10,000 km (3,000-6,000 mi)
- Air filter: every 20,000 km (12,000 mi)
- Spark plugs: every 40,000-60,000 km
- Coolant: every 2-3 years
