The Nissan QG15DE engine is a 1.5-liter,
inline-four, water-cooled, four-stroke gasoline engine developed as part
of Nissan’s QG-series. Introduced in the early 2000s, the QG15DE became
a widely used small-displacement engine in compact Nissan vehicles
including the Nissan Sunny, Almera, Pulsar, Wingroad, AD Van, and
various regional sedans and hatchbacks.
It replaced earlier GA-series engines, offering improved fuel
efficiency, smoother operation, cleaner emissions, and reduced
maintenance. The QG15DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head, a cast-iron
block for durability, four valves per cylinder, a chain-driven
valvetrain, and multi-point fuel injection for precise mixture control.
Although modest in displacement, the QG15DE is known for dependable
service life, low running costs, and stable performance in urban and
mixed driving. It is not designed as a performance engine, but rather as
a reliable, economical, and easy-to-maintain powerplant. Its long-stroke
layout and efficient combustion design provide good fuel economy and
useful torque for small passenger vehicles. The QG15DE remains popular
in markets requiring robust engines that can handle varied fuel quality
and high mileage.
The QG15DE engine displaces 1,498 cc (91.4 cu in). Bore is approx. 73.6
mm (2.90 in). Stroke is approx. 88.0 mm (3.46 in), giving the engine a
long-stroke profile that emphasizes torque at lower rpm. Compression
ratio is 9.9:1 - 10.2:1. Maximum power output ranges 105-109 hp at 6,000
rpm depending on model and region. Maximum torque is approx. 100-103
lb-ft (135-140 Nm) at approx. 4,000 rpm. Idle speed is 700-750 rpm. The
firing order is 1-3-4-2. Redline is 6,500-6,700 rpm depending on ECU
calibration.
The cast-iron block provides structural rigidity and excellent
durability under long-term use. The forged-steel crankshaft rotates on
five main bearings to ensure smoothness and stability at all engine
speeds.
The pistons are lightweight aluminum alloy with low-friction skirt
coatings. The connecting rods are forged steel with full-floating wrist
pins. The bottom end is engineered for prolonged daily operation with
minimal wear when using proper lubrication.
The QG15DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder
head with:
- Chain-driven dual overhead camshafts
- Four valves per cylinder
- Roller rocker arms for reduced friction
- Hydraulic lash adjusters for zero-maintenance clearance
- Timing-chain tensioner (oil-pressure assisted)
The combustion chambers are compact and shaped for optimum swirl and
mixture homogenization. Intake and exhaust ports are designed to balance
airflow velocity and emissions performance. The chain-driven valvetrain
is designed for the life of the engine and does not require routine
replacement under normal service conditions.
The QG15DE uses a multi-point electronic fuel-injection (MPFI) system.
Components include:
- In-tank electric fuel pump
- Fuel-pressure regulator (return or returnless depending on market)
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole injectors
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Throttle body (cable or electronic)
Fuel pressure generally ranges approx. 43-50 psi.
The ECM adjusts fuel delivery based on:
- Oxygen sensors
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
- Knock sensor
- Coolant-temperature sensor
- Intake-air-temperature sensor
- Throttle-position sensor
The MPFI system improves fuel economy, throttle response, and emissions
consistency.
The lubrication system is a wet-sump, full-pressure system.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 3.0-3.5 liters (approx. 3.2-3.7 US qt)
- Oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20 psi at
idle
- Recommended oils: 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic or semi-synthetic
A crankshaft-driven oil pump provides lubrication to crankshaft
journals, connecting rods, camshafts, timing chain, and valvetrain. The
QG15DE uses a spin-on oil filter for easy service. Proper lubrication is
essential for timing-chain longevity and hydraulic-lifter function.
The QG15DE uses a liquid-cooled forced-circulation cooling system.
Components include:
- Belt-driven water pump
- Aluminum-core radiator
- Thermostat
- Coolant expansion tank
- Heater core
- Temperature sensors
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins opening approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System capacity 6.0-6.5 liters (approx. 6.3-6.8 US qt)
The cooling system protects the cast-iron block from thermal stress and
ensures emissions stability through consistent operating temperatures.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-cleaner housing
- Paper air filter
- Intake snorkel
- MAF sensor
- Throttle body
- Long-runner plastic intake manifold
The intake manifold is tuned for efficient low- and mid-range torque.
Airflow is managed precisely to maintain stability with CVT
transmissions used in many applications.
The exhaust system features:
- Cast-steel or stainless-steel exhaust manifold
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Underfloor catalytic converter (region dependent)
- Upstream and downstream oxygen sensors
- Resonator and muffler system
The exhaust layout supports low emissions, low noise, and consistent
torque characteristics.
The ignition system is electronically controlled and uses coil-on-plug
ignition modules.
System features:
- Four individual ignition coils
- Platinum or iridium spark plugs
- Crank-angle sensor
- Cam-angle sensor
- ECM-controlled ignition timing
Spark-plug gap measures approx. 0.9-1.1 mm (0.035-0.043 in). The ECM
manages spark advance dynamically to prevent detonation and optimize
efficiency.
- Length 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
- Width 580-620 mm (22.8-24.4 in)
- Height 640-700 mm (25.2-27.6 in)
Dry weight: 110-125 kg (243-276 lb) depending on accessories.
Recommended intervals:
- Oil and filter every 5,000-10,000 km (3,000-6,000 mi)
- Air filter every 20,000 km
- Spark plugs every 30,000-60,000 km
- Coolant every 2-3 years
- Drive belts inspect every 20,000-30,000 km
- Fuel filter usually non-serviceable (in-tank type)
Compression pressure:
- Approx. 160-190 psi
- Variation between cylinders should be less than 10 percent
A stable idle speed of approx. 700-750 rpm indicates proper maintenance.
- Cylinder-head bolts: approx. 75-85 lb-ft (102-115 Nm)
- Main-bearing caps: approx. 55-65 lb-ft (75-88 Nm)
