The Honda J35Z8 is a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline
engine developed as part of Honda’s late-generation J-series
architecture, engineered to provide a refined balance of performance,
fuel efficiency, durability, and low NVH (noise, vibration, and
harshness). Introduced for select late-2000s and early-2010s Honda and
Acura platforms, the engine represents a mature evolution of Honda’s
long-running J35 series.
It integrates modernized combustion chamber design, intelligent
electronic throttle control, highly adaptive ECU strategies, and
optional Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) to reduce fuel consumption
when cruising under light load. The J35Z8 generates smooth, usable
torque from low to mid-rpm ranges, making it well-suited for midsize
sedans, crossovers, and luxury-oriented models requiring confident
acceleration and quiet operation.
The engine follows Honda’s traditional philosophy of lightweight
aluminum architecture, strong bottom-end rigidity, and superb long-term
reliability. The pairing of an aluminum block with cast-iron liners
provides a favorable balance between cooling capacity and wear
resistance. Honda’s SOHC VTEC system on the intake camshaft further
increases airflow efficiency, allowing the J35Z8 to provide responsive
mid-range behavior and effortless daily drivability.
Although not a high-revving performance motor, the J35Z8 is widely
respected for its quiet operation, high dependability, and impressive
fuel economy - especially in VCM-equipped versions. With routine
maintenance, the J35Z8 commonly surpasses hundreds of thousands of km
with minimal internal degradation.
The J35Z8 is a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, 60-degree V6 with a total
displacement of 3,471 cc (212.0 cubic inches). Bore is 89.0 mm (3.50
inches), and stroke is 93.0 mm (3.66 inches), forming a long-stroke
configuration optimized for torque production. Compression ratio is
10.5:1, contributing to strong off-idle response, efficient combustion,
and compatibility with regular unleaded gasoline.
Factory power output ranges between 268 and 273 Hp (200-204 kW) at 6,200
rpm depending on application. Peak torque measures around 336-344 Nm
(248-254 lb-ft) at roughly 4,700 rpm. Idle speed is generally calibrated
near 680 ± 50 rpm. The engine is governed to a rev limit of around 6,700
rpm. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, the same used throughout the
J-series family, chosen for smoothness and minimal torsional vibration.
The rotating assembly employs a forged steel crankshaft running on four
main bearings. Forged connecting rods and lightweight aluminum pistons
with molybdenum-coated skirts ensure minimal friction and long component
life.
Cast-iron cylinder liners are centrifugally bonded into the aluminum
block, providing durable cylinder walls resistant to scoring,
distortion, and wear. The crankshaft journals are wide and precisely
machined, providing consistent oil film thickness and excellent
high-load durability.
The J35Z8’s aluminum open-deck block reduces overall weight while
providing sufficient cooling around the combustion chambers. Honda
integrates cast-iron liners into each cylinder, combining the superior
heat dissipation of aluminum with the wear resistance of iron. Deep
external skirts enhance block rigidity and reduce distortion under load,
improving long-term sealing and reducing NVH.
The lower end is reinforced by a heavy-duty main bearing girdle,
essentially a structural reinforcement plate that integrates all main
bearing caps into one rigid assembly. This minimizes crankshaft flex at
high rpm, improves oil control, and maintains consistent bearing
clearances. The block incorporates optimized coolant jackets around
combustion chambers and exhaust passages, promoting even temperature
distribution and prolonging head gasket life.
Oil jets mounted beneath each piston help reduce piston crown
temperature, crucial for maintaining knock resistance and piston
longevity during extended high-load operation. The internal oil
galleries distribute oil to crankshaft journals, connecting rod
bearings, camshaft journals, rocker shafts, and VCM rocker mechanisms
(if equipped).
The J35Z8 uses aluminum SOHC cylinder heads with four valves per
cylinder, providing a strong balance of airflow, efficiency, and
reliability. The valvetrain uses roller rocker arms to reduce friction
and extend service life. Hydraulic lash adjusters eliminate the need for
periodic valve clearance adjustment.
Honda’s i-VTEC system is located on the intake camshaft and adjusts both
cam phasing and lift. At low rpm, mild cam profiles maximize torque and
fuel efficiency. At higher rpm, the system transitions to a more
aggressive cam profile, increasing airflow and improving power delivery.
VTEC activation is electronically controlled and depends on engine load,
rpm, oil temperature, and other ECU inputs.
Valve diameters measure:
- Intake: 35 mm (1.38 in)
- Exhaust: 30 mm (1.18 in)
The combustion chambers use compact, swirl-enhanced pent-roof shapes
that ensure efficient air-fuel mixing, stable ignition, and low
emissions. The cylinder head also includes integrated coolant passages
designed to reduce hot spots and prevent detonation.
The J35Z8 uses Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point fuel injection with
a returnless fuel system. An in-tank pump supplies fuel to a
high-precision rail maintaining approximately 350-400 kPa (51-58 psi).
Multi-hole atomization injectors provide fine spray patterns for
complete combustion.
Key sensors:
- MAP, IAT, ECT, throttle-position (DBW)
- wideband upstream oxygen sensor
- downstream oxygen sensor
- knock sensor
- CMP and CKP position sensors
Fuel delivery is continuously adjusted via closed-loop feedback based on
oxygen-sensor data. Recommended fuel is 87 AKI (91 RON), though higher
octane may improve knock resistance under heavy load.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design using a
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 4.5 L (4.8 qt)
- Operating pressure at 3,000 rpm: 350-500 kPa (51-72 psi)
- Idle oil pressure: 70-120 kPa (10-17 psi)
A full-flow spin-on oil filter removes contaminants. Piston oil jets
reduce thermal loading, and the oil pump’s design ensures consistent
lubrication even during hard cornering or towing. Recommended oil
viscosity is SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20. Regular intervals of 10,000 km (6,000
miles) ensure long engine life.
The liquid-cooling system uses a belt-driven centrifugal pump.
Specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 7.0-7.5 L (7.4-7.9 qt)
- Thermostat opening: 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Full-open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: 90-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
The aluminum radiator is paired with electric fans programmed by the
ECU. Coolant must be replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two
years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Induction is handled by a composite intake manifold tuned for smooth
torque and efficient throttle response. A resonated airbox and
large-diameter intake tubing minimize noise without restricting airflow.
The throttle body is electronically controlled (drive-by-wire).
Exhaust components:
- cast stainless exhaust manifolds
- close-coupled catalytic converter
- secondary catalytic converter depending on platform
- wideband upstream and conventional downstream O2 sensors
The system is optimized for emissions compliance while preserving
mid-range torque.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition is delivered by coil-on-plug modules with ECU-controlled
timing. Iridium spark plugs ensure long life and stable ignition.
Electrical specs:
- Alternator: 110-130 A
- Starter: 1.6-2.0 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
The ECU manages ignition timing, VTEC, VCM (if equipped), throttle
modulation, cam phasing, and knock control.
Depending on vehicle configuration, the J35Z8 may feature Honda’s
Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). This system deactivates a group of
cylinders during light-load cruising by disabling valve actuation using
special rocker arm mechanisms and cutting fuel and spark to those
cylinders.
The ECU transitions between 6-, 4-, and 3-cylinder modes as needed. The
system is also supported by special engine mounts and active noise
cancellation to reduce vibrations.
