The Honda J35A7 is a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline
engine belonging to Honda’s highly successful J-series family. Used
primarily in the mid-2000s Acura MDX and select Honda/Acura SUVs and
crossovers depending on market, the J35A7 was engineered to deliver a
refined combination of smooth power, dependable torque, low emissions,
and excellent long-term durability.
This engine represents an evolution of the early J-series architecture,
incorporating enhanced cylinder-head airflow characteristics, improved
combustion efficiency, and strengthened bottom-end structure. Its focus
is not on high-rpm performance but on effortless, real-world
drivability, especially in heavier vehicles requiring strong mid-range
output and confident towing capability.
The J35A7 integrates Honda’s i-VTEC intake-side variable valve timing
system, multi-point PGM-FI electronic fuel injection, a lightweight
aluminum block, and aluminum SOHC cylinder heads with four valves per
cylinder. It offers a refined torque curve, smooth NVH characteristics,
and fuel efficiency appropriate for premium SUVs of its time. Known for
its reliability and ability to exceed high mileage with routine
maintenance, the J35A7 remains a respected member of Honda’s V6 lineup.
The Honda J35A7 is a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, 60-degree V6 gasoline
engine with a displacement of 3,471 cc (212 cubic inches). Bore is 89 mm
(3.50 inches) and stroke is 93 mm (3.66 inches), giving it a long-stroke
configuration optimized for torque delivery. The compression ratio is
approximately 10.0:1 depending on the model year.
Factory output:
- Power: approx. 253-260 hp (189-194 kW) at 5,500-5,800 rpm
- Torque: approx. 340-345 Nm (250-255 lb-ft) at around 4,500 rpm
- Idle speed: approx. 680 ± 50 rpm
- Rev limiter: approx. 6,500-6,700 rpm
The engine features a forged steel crankshaft supported by four main
bearings, forged connecting rods, and cast aluminum pistons with
molybdenum-coated skirts for reduced friction. Honda’s PGM-FI fuel
injection and i-VTEC intake-cam system improve airflow, fuel efficiency,
and emissions. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The J35A7 uses a strong yet lightweight aluminum open-deck block with
cast-iron cylinder liners for durability. The 60-degree V-angle provides
perfect natural balance for a V6 while allowing compact packaging in
transverse-mounted drivetrains. Deep skirt construction reduces block
flex, resulting in improved bottom-end rigidity and better NVH
performance.
The block features:
- cast-in coolant passages for uniform thermal distribution
- high-strength cast-iron liners for long wear life
- a heavy-duty main bearing girdle tying all main caps into a single
rigid structure
- oil galleries feeding crankshaft, rods, heads, and valvetrain
components
Oil jets located beneath the pistons spray oil onto the piston crowns,
reducing operating temperature and improving detonation resistance,
particularly under sustained load such as towing or climbing.
The aluminum cylinder heads incorporate SOHC architecture with four
valves per cylinder. The intake camshaft features Honda’s i-VTEC system,
combining variable lift and duration with adjustable cam phasing. This
gives the J35A7 an efficient powerband, strong mid-range torque, and
reduced fuel consumption during light-load cruising.
Valve diameters:
- Intake valves: approx. 35 mm (1.38 in)
- Exhaust valves: approx. 30 mm (1.18 in)
Roller rocker arms minimize friction and improve valvetrain efficiency.
Hydraulic lash adjusters eliminate the need for manual valve-clearance
adjustments, improving service simplicity. The combustion chambers are
swirl-enhanced pent-roof designs that produce efficient mixture motion,
stable flame propagation, and lower emissions.
The J35A7 uses Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point electronic fuel
injection. A returnless fuel system maintains fuel pressure around
350-400 kPa (51-58 psi). High-precision injector atomization supports
complete combustion and responsive throttle behavior.
Fuel-system sensors include:
- MAP sensor
- IAT sensor
- ECT sensor
- TPS (within the electronic throttle body)
- Upstream wideband oxygen sensor
- Downstream O2 sensor
- Knock sensor
- CKP (crankshaft) and CMP (camshaft) sensors
The ECU modulates injector pulse width, ignition timing, VTEC
activation, and throttle input to optimize fuel economy and performance.
Recommended fuel is regular unleaded gasoline of at least 87 AKI (91
RON).
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump type. A
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump ensures steady oil pressure across
the rpm range.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: approx. 350-500 kPa (51-72 psi)
- Idle oil pressure: approx. 70-120 kPa (10-17 psi)
The system includes a full-flow spin-on oil filter, piston cooling jets,
and optimized oil channels. Recommended oil viscosity is 0W-20 or 5W-20.
Change intervals are 10,000 km (6,000 miles) under normal driving
conditions.
The cooling system is a liquid, closed-loop design with forced
circulation using a belt-driven centrifugal water pump.
Cooling system specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 7.0-7.5 liters (7.4-7.9 US quarts)
- Thermostat opening temperature: 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Fully open temperature: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: approx. 90-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
The aluminum radiator is paired with dual electric cooling fans
controlled by the ECU. The coolant pathway is engineered to minimize
hotspots and maintain even temperatures across both banks. Coolant
service interval is every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or 2 years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes a composite intake manifold optimized for
mid-range torque and high airflow efficiency. The drive-by-wire throttle
body provides smooth throttle modulation.
The exhaust system uses:
- cast stainless exhaust manifolds
- close-coupled catalytic converter (primary)
- secondary catalytic converter (platform-specific)
- upstream and downstream oxygen sensors
The exhaust is tuned for efficiency, emissions performance, and quiet
operation.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition is delivered through a coil-on-plug system controlled by the
ECU. Iridium spark plugs ensure long life and reliable ignition at
varying engine loads.
Electrical specifications:
- Spark plug gap: approx. 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in)
- Alternator output: approx. 110-130 amperes
- Starter power: approx. 1.6-2.0 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
