The Honda J35A9 is a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline
engine belonging to the later production stages of Honda’s highly
successful J-series engine family. Used primarily in North American
Honda and Acura models during the mid-to-late 2000s, the J35A9
represents a refined, torque-rich, and durable evolution of the earlier
J35A variants.
It features an aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads, Honda’s advanced
VTEC valvetrain on the intake side, and the company’s Variable Cylinder
Management (VCM) system on certain platforms. Designed for smooth
operation, low emissions, and strong mid-range torque, the J35A9 is well
suited for larger passenger vehicles, crossovers, and premium sedans.
The J35A9 emphasizes practical performance - strong acceleration from
low and mid engine speeds, quiet operation, and high long-term
reliability. Engineers enhanced airflow in the intake and exhaust
tracts, improved cooling efficiency, strengthened internal components,
and revised ECU calibrations to produce a well-balanced engine that
performs smoothly under a wide range of load conditions.
Even at high mileage, the J35A9 is known for its durability, provided
that maintenance schedules are followed. The combination of lightweight
aluminum construction, precision electronic management, and optimized
combustion technology makes the J35A9 a dependable and efficient V6
suitable for both daily use and long-distance travel.
The Honda J35A9 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, 60-degree V6 gasoline
engine with a total displacement of 3,471 cc (212.0 cubic inches). Bore
is 89.0 mm (3.50 inches) and stroke is 93.0 mm (3.66 inches), creating a
long-stroke layout optimized for robust low-rpm torque. Compression
ratio is approximately 10.5:1, giving good thermal efficiency while
maintaining compatibility with regular unleaded gasoline.
Standard power output is around 268 Hp (200 kW) at 6,000 rpm. Peak
torque is generally 344 Nm (254 lb-ft) at about 4,700 rpm. The engine
idles at roughly 680 ± 50 rpm, and the rev limiter is set near 6,700
rpm. The J35A9 features an aluminum block and aluminum SOHC cylinder
heads, four valves per cylinder, and uses Honda’s i-VTEC variable valve
timing system. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The rotating assembly includes a forged steel crankshaft supported by
four main bearings, forged steel connecting rods, and aluminum alloy
pistons with molybdenum-coated skirts designed to reduce friction.
Cast-in iron cylinder liners provide wear resistance. The engine uses
multi-point programmed fuel injection, electronic throttle control, and
sophisticated knock and airflow monitoring systems.
The J35A9 block is an aluminum open-deck design featuring centrifugally
cast iron liners. The 60-degree V-angle reduces vibration and improves
packaging efficiency for transverse installations commonly used in
front-wheel-drive vehicles. Deep skirt architecture enhances stiffness
and minimizes block flex under load.
Oil passages are integrated to ensure consistent lubrication, while
coolant passages promote uniform temperature distribution. A structural
main bearing girdle ties all the main caps together, improving the
rigidity of the lower end and maintaining crankshaft stability at high
rpm. The crankshaft journals are sized for optimum bearing load
distribution, contributing to long-term reliability.
Each cylinder bank uses an aluminum SOHC head featuring four valves per
cylinder. The J35A9 uses Honda’s i-VTEC system on the intake camshaft,
combining variable cam phasing with variable lift and duration. This
system improves low-rpm torque and enhances high-rpm power production by
switching between mild and aggressive cam profiles.
Valve sizes are:
- Intake valves: 35 mm (1.38 inches)
- Exhaust valves: 30 mm (1.18 inches)
The valvetrain includes roller rocker arms for reduced friction and
improved responsiveness. Camshafts are driven by a silent-type roller
chain with an automatic hydraulic tensioner. The combustion chambers are
designed for efficient mixture swirl and stable ignition, optimizing
both power output and fuel economy.
The J35A9 uses Honda’s PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) sequential
multi-point fuel delivery system. Fuel pressure is maintained at
approximately 350-400 kPa (51-58 psi) using an in-tank pressure
regulator.
Key fuel system components and sensors
include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- Fine paper-element fuel filter (integrated in pump module)
- High-precision multi-hole injectors
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Wideband oxygen sensor (upstream)
- Conventional oxygen sensor (downstream)
- Throttle Position Sensor (built into electronic throttle body)
- Knock sensor
- Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) and Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
Honda calibrates the ECU to balance fuel efficiency with strong torque
delivery. The returnless system helps reduce evaporative emissions.
Recommended fuel is regular unleaded gasoline with at least 87 AKI (91
RON), though higher octane may enhance knock resistance under heavy
load.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design. A
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump draws engine oil through a mesh
pickup screen and pushes it through a full-flow spin-on filter before
distributing it to the main oil gallery.
Lubrication specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: approx. 350-500 kPa (51-72 psi)
- Idle oil pressure: approx. 70-120 kPa (10-17 psi)
The pistons use oil cooling jets to reduce thermal stress and prevent
detonation during extended load or high rpm operation. Recommended oil
viscosity is SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 depending on temperature. Oil change
intervals are every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) under normal use.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation design. A
belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the
aluminum block, cylinder heads, heater core, and radiator.
Cooling specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 7.0-7.5 liters (7.4-7.9 US quarts)
- Thermostat begins opening: approx. 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Thermostat fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: approx. 90-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
Dual electric radiator fans ensure sufficient cooling under heavy load
or hot weather conditions. Honda recommends a 50/50 mixture of ethylene
glycol antifreeze and distilled water, with replacement every 40,000 km
(25,000 miles) or two years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
