The Honda J32A2 is a 3.2-liter V6 gasoline
engine developed as one of the highest-performance variants of Honda’s
J-series engine family. Introduced in the early 2000s, it powered
performance-oriented Acura models, most notably the Acura TL Type-S and
the Acura CL Type-S. The J32A2 represents Honda’s engineering approach
to naturally aspirated refinement, combining smooth power delivery,
high-flow cylinder heads, aggressive camshaft profiles, and precision
electronic management.
Despite lacking forced induction, the engine delivers strong mid-range
power and a wide usable torque band, making it suitable for both sporty
driving and daily use. Known for reliability, low NVH levels, and
durability under high-load operation, the J32A2 remains a favorite among
enthusiasts and tuners.
The Honda J32A2 is a 3,210-cc (195.9 cu in) 60-degree V6 gasoline engine
operating on the four-stroke Otto cycle. Bore is 89 mm (3.50 in), stroke
is 86 mm (3.39 in), and the compression ratio is approximately 10.5:1.
The aluminum block and cylinder heads contribute to reduced weight and
improved heat dissipation.
Factory power output is 260 Hp (194 kW) at around 6,200 rpm. Peak torque
is rated at approximately 323 Nm (238 lb-ft) at around 3,500-4,000 rpm.
Rev limiter is set near 6,800 rpm, and idle speed is approximately 700 ±
50 rpm. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The crankshaft is a forged-steel unit supported by four main bearings.
Connecting rods are high-strength steel components optimized for
durability under sustained high-rpm operation. Pistons are lightweight
aluminum alloy with molybdenum-coated skirts for friction reduction.
Intake and exhaust manifolds are designed to improve airflow efficiency
and torque characteristics across the rpm range.
The J32A2 uses an aluminum open-deck engine block incorporating
cast-iron liners for durability. The 60-degree V-angle provides inherent
balance without the need for balance shafts. Deep skirt architecture
improves rigidity and vibration control.
The main bearing girdle reinforces the bottom end to reduce crankshaft
flex during high-load conditions. Oil and coolant passages are cast to
ensure uniform cooling and lubrication. The forged-steel crankshaft is
engineered to provide long service life even under spirited driving
conditions.
The engine features an aluminum SOHC (single overhead camshaft) cylinder
head per bank, operating four valves per cylinder for a total of 24
valves. Honda’s VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control)
is used on both intake and exhaust cam lobes, enabling two levels of
valve lift and duration depending on engine load and rpm.
Valve sizes:
- Intake valves: approx. 35 mm (1.38 in)
- Exhaust valves: approx. 30 mm (1.18 in)
The VTEC system activates higher-lift cam lobes near 4,800-5,200 rpm,
significantly improving high-rpm breathing and power delivery. Rocker
arms are roller-type to reduce valvetrain friction. A silent-type chain
drives the camshafts, using an automatic hydraulic tensioner for
long-term reliability.
The J32A2 employs Honda’s sequential multi-point Programmed Fuel
Injection (PGM-FI). Each cylinder is equipped with a high-precision
injector. Fuel pressure is approximately 350-380 kPa (51-55 psi),
maintained by an in-tank regulator.
Sensors used for fuel control include:
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (market-dependent)
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Primary and secondary oxygen sensors
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
- Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)
Fuel type: unleaded gasoline minimum 91 AKI (95 RON). The intake
manifold is high-flow aluminum, tuned for mid-range torque.
Lubrication is provided by a full-pressure wet-sump system with a
crankshaft-driven trochoid pump. Oil is filtered by a full-flow spin-on
element.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: approx. 320-480 kPa (46-70 psi)
- Idle oil pressure: approx. 70-110 kPa (10-16 psi)
Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 depending on climate. Oil
jets cool the piston undersides to maintain stable combustion
temperatures. Oil change interval is generally 8,000-10,000 km
(5,000-6,000 miles).
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation design with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant flows through aluminum
heads, block passages, radiator, and heater core.
Specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 7.0 liters (7.4 US quarts)
- Thermostat opening: approx. 80°C (176°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: approx. 90-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
Electric cooling fans ensure stable temperature under heavy load.
Coolant should be replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
The system includes a pressurized overflow reservoir and bleed points
for removing air pockets.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The J32A2 intake system includes:
- High-flow intake manifold
- Drive-by-wire throttle body (depending on platform)
- Low-restriction air intake housing
- Dry-element air filter
The exhaust system uses:
- Stainless-steel tubular headers (high-flow design)
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Secondary downstream catalytic converter (platform-dependent)
- Oxygen sensors for closed-loop operation
The J32A2’s exhaust manifold design is one of the major contributors to
its improved performance over other J-series variants.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition is managed by individual coil-on-plug modules, eliminating the
need for a distributor. Iridium spark plugs ensure long ignition life
and consistent spark under high-rpm operation.
Specifications:
- Spark plug gap: approx. 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in)
- Alternator output: approx. 110-130 A
- Starter motor: approx. 1.8-2.0 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
The ECU controls ignition timing, VTEC engagement, fuel mapping, idle
speed, and emissions systems.
The J32A2 includes:
- PCV system for crankcase pressure control
- EVAP emissions system
- Knock sensor feedback for timing control
- OBD-II diagnostics
- EGR system for NOx reduction
- Length: 700 mm (27.6 in)
- Width: 650 mm (25.6 in)
- Height: 710 mm (28.0 in)
