General Technical Data
The Mitsubishi 4G92 is a 1.6-liter inline-four gasoline engine belonging to the Orion family, produced by Mitsubishi Motors from the early 1990s through the late 2000s. It was designed as a versatile small-displacement powerplant for compact sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks such as the Lancer, Mirage, and Colt. The 4G92 came in several variations, including the standard SOHC 16-valve configuration and the more advanced DOHC MIVEC version.
These variants provided a wide range of
performance levels, from economical daily driving to sporty,
high-revving operation suitable for performance-oriented models. With
its compact dimensions, aluminum cylinder head, and robust cast-iron
block, the 4G92 offered an excellent balance between durability, fuel
economy, and power output.
The SOHC version emphasized simplicity and economy, while the DOHC and
DOHC MIVEC variants pushed the performance boundaries of the 1.6-liter
class. The MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic
Control) system allowed variable valve timing and lift to optimize
airflow across the rev range.
This made the 4G92 MIVEC comparable in concept
to Honda’s VTEC and Toyota’s VVT-i systems. The engine’s reputation for
reliability, smooth operation, and tuning potential made it a popular
choice among enthusiasts and tuners alike.
The 4G92 engine displaces 1,597 cc (97.5 cubic inches) through a bore of
81.0 mm (3.19 inches) and a stroke of 77.5 mm (3.05 inches). The
compression ratio varies depending on version: approximately 9.5:1 for
the SOHC and up to 11.0:1 for the MIVEC high-performance variant.
The cylinder block is made of cast iron for
durability and rigidity, while the cylinder head is aluminum alloy with
either single or dual overhead camshafts, each operating four valves per
cylinder. This design results in sixteen valves total, ensuring
efficient breathing and combustion. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, and the
engine rotates clockwise when viewed from the crankshaft pulley end.
Power output ranges widely depending on configuration. The standard SOHC
variant produces around 81 to 84 kW (110 to 113 PS, or 108 to 112
horsepower) at approximately 6,000 revolutions per minute, with torque
output near 147 Nm (108 lb-ft) at 4,500 rpm. The DOHC version raises
output to about 85 to 92 kW (115 to 125 horsepower) at 7,000 rpm.
The high-performance DOHC MIVEC variant
produces between 123 and 130 kW (165 to 175 horsepower) at 7,500 rpm,
with torque peaking around 167 Nm (123 lb-ft) at 7,000 rpm. Redline for
MIVEC versions extends to about 8,000 rpm, demonstrating their
high-revving nature.
The crankshaft is made of forged steel with five main bearings, and
connecting rods are forged steel with full-floating piston pins. The
pistons are lightweight aluminum alloy with two compression rings and
one oil control ring. Valve clearance on non-hydraulic variants is
adjusted manually using shims. In MIVEC versions, cam phasing and lift
changes are hydraulically actuated via engine oil pressure controlled by
the ECU.
Fuel System
The 4G92 utilizes electronic fuel injection (EFI) with multi-point injectors delivering fuel to each cylinder’s intake port. Fuel is supplied by an in-tank electric pump through a high-pressure line to the fuel rail. The system pressure is about 300 kPa (43.5 psi), regulated by a vacuum-sensitive pressure regulator.
The ECU determines injection pulse width and timing based on inputs from
the throttle position sensor, air flow meter, oxygen sensor, crank angle
sensor, and coolant temperature sensor. Fuel atomization is optimized
for efficient combustion and reduced emissions. Earlier versions
employed a return fuel line system, while later ones adopted a
returnless configuration to reduce evaporative losses.
Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 95
RON (91 AKI). The fuel filter should be replaced every 40,000 km (25,000
miles), and injectors should be cleaned or tested every 80,000 km
(50,000 miles) to maintain proper spray pattern and efficiency.
Lubrication System
The engine employs a pressurized lubrication system with a trochoid-type
oil pump driven by the crankshaft. Oil is drawn from the sump through a
mesh strainer and distributed through internal galleries to crankshaft
bearings, connecting rods, camshafts, and valve mechanisms. Full-flow
oil filtration is provided by a spin-on type replaceable filter with a
bypass valve. The standard oil pressure is approximately 350 to 450 kPa
(51 to 65 psi) at 3,000 rpm and around 100 kPa (15 psi) at idle.
Oil capacity with filter replacement is about 4.0 liters (4.2 US quarts,
3.5 Imperial quarts). Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30
meeting API SJ or higher. The crankcase ventilation system includes a
PCV valve mounted on the rocker cover, which routes blow-by gases back
into the intake manifold for re-combustion, reducing emissions. Regular
oil and filter changes should occur every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or six
months under normal service, and more often under severe conditions.
Cooling System
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled, forced-circulation
type. The centrifugal water pump is belt-driven by the crankshaft,
circulating coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, radiator,
and heater core. The thermostat begins to open at approximately 82°C
(180°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). Coolant capacity is about 6.0
liters (6.3 US quarts, 5.3 Imperial quarts). Recommended coolant is a
50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water, protecting to
–35°C (–31°F).
The radiator is aluminum with plastic tanks, and cooling fans are
electrically controlled based on coolant temperature sensor signals. The
system’s pressure cap is rated around 88 kPa (13 psi). Regular coolant
replacement every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years is recommended
to prevent corrosion and maintain optimal cooling efficiency.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The induction system employs an aluminum or composite intake manifold with tuned runners optimized for midrange torque. The throttle body is cable-actuated in early models and electronically controlled in later MIVEC units. The air filter is a dry paper element, replaceable every 20,000 km (12,000 miles).
The MIVEC version features dual intake runners to enhance breathing efficiency at high rpm. Exhaust manifolds vary from cast iron in economy versions to stainless tubular headers in performance-oriented variants. The exhaust system includes a catalytic converter and oxygen sensors to meet emission standards.
Ignition and Electrical System
The ignition system evolved from a single-coil distributor setup in early 4G92 engines to a distributor-less or coil-on-plug system in later and MIVEC variants. Spark plugs are typically NGK BKR6E or equivalent, gapped at 1.1 mm (0.043 inch). Ignition timing and fuel injection are managed by an ECU that integrates data from sensors monitoring throttle position, engine load, crank angle, intake air temperature, and knock detection.
The alternator provides 12 volts DC and is rated between 75 and 90 amperes depending on the model. The starter motor is a reduction-gear type drawing approximately 1.0 to 1.2 kW. Electrical grounding is ensured through dedicated engine-chassis straps.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
The timing system uses a toothed rubber belt to synchronize crankshaft and camshafts. The belt also drives the water pump. Replacement is recommended every 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles). Belt tension is maintained by an automatic or spring-loaded tensioner.
On the MIVEC version, the intake camshaft features a two-mode profile with both low- and high-lift lobes. The ECU commands a solenoid valve to redirect oil pressure to the MIVEC actuator, switching cam profiles around 6,000 rpm for improved top-end performance while maintaining low-end efficiency.
Dimensions and Weight
The 4G92’s compact dimensions make it suitable for both longitudinal and transverse installation. The overall length is approximately 630 mm (24.8 inches), width 600 mm (23.6 inches), and height 680 mm (26.8 inches). The dry weight is about 125 kg (276 lbs) for SOHC versions and approximately 135 kg (298 lbs) for the DOHC MIVEC. These relatively low weights contribute to good vehicle balance and handling characteristics.
Maintenance Data
Engine oil and filter changes are specified every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 km (18,000 miles) or inspected regularly for wear. Air filter replacement occurs every 20,000 km (12,000 miles), while the fuel filter should be renewed every 40,000 km (25,000 miles).
Coolant is replaced every two years or 40,000 km (25,000 miles). Valve
clearance should be checked every 80,000 km (50,000 miles) for
non-hydraulic systems. The timing belt, water pump, and tensioner should
be replaced every 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
Idle speed is approximately 750 ± 50 rpm for SOHC versions and 900 ± 50
rpm for MIVEC units. Normal compression pressure per cylinder is 1,300
kPa (190 psi) with a minimum of 1,000 kPa (145 psi). The maximum
allowable difference between cylinders is 100 kPa (15 psi). Oil pressure
at idle is about 100 kPa (15 psi) and at 3,000 rpm around 400 kPa (58
psi).
