The Honda F23Z5 is a 2.3-liter inline-four,
four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine produced as part of the
F-series family during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Installed mainly
in select Honda Accord and regional market derivatives, the F23Z5
emphasizes smooth operation, fuel efficiency, moderate torque output,
and long-term reliability. The engine uses an aluminum cylinder head
paired with a cast-iron block, a proven layout that balances thermal
management with structural strength.
It features a single overhead camshaft with Honda's VTEC or non-VTEC
implementation depending on market calibration. The firing order is
1-3-4-2. The F23Z5 is appreciated for its low maintenance requirements,
durability, simple design, and strong mid-range drivability. It
represents Honda's engineering focus on practical performance, long
component life, clean emissions, and efficient combustion for mid-size
passenger vehicles.
The F23Z5 has a total displacement of 2254 cc (2.254 liters / 137.6
cubic inches). Bore measures 86.0 mm (3.39 inches), and stroke is 97.0
mm (3.82 inches), forming a long-stroke configuration optimized for
torque. Compression ratio varies slightly by market but is around 9.3:1.
Peak power output is 150 Hp (112 kW / 152 PS) at around 5700 rpm.
Maximum torque is about 152 lb-ft (206 Nm) at roughly 4900 rpm.
Idle speed is normally set between 650 and 750 rpm. The block contains
five main bearings for stability. Aluminum pistons employ a three-ring
configuration, and forged connecting rods ensure reliability under
continuous use. The aluminum cylinder head houses the camshaft and
valvetrain components. Valve timing is controlled by a toothed rubber
timing belt.
The engine uses a programmed multi-point fuel injection system with an
in-tank electric fuel pump supplying fuel through a high-pressure line
to the fuel rail and four solenoid injectors. Fuel pressure is regulated
at approximately 300 kPa (43 psi).
The ECU determines injection timing and pulse width based on input from
sensors including the manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle
position sensor, intake air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, and
engine coolant temperature sensor. The throttle body is cable-operated
and incorporates idle air control mechanisms for stable idle and cold
operation. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87
AKI (91 to 92 RON).
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump type driven by a
crankshaft-mounted trochoid pump. Oil passes through a pickup screen and
into a spin-on full-flow filter before reaching the crankshaft bearings,
connecting rods, camshaft journals, valvetrain oil passages, and
internal lubrication galleries.
Total oil capacity including filter is 4.3 to 4.5 liters (4.5 to 4.8 US
quarts). Recommended viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on
ambient temperature. Normal oil pressure at cruising speeds ranges from
roughly 300 to 450 kPa (44 to 65 psi). The PCV system maintains
crankcase ventilation and reduces oil contamination.
The cooling system is a forced-circulation, liquid-cooled system.
Coolant is moved through the engine by a belt-driven centrifugal water
pump. Coolant flows through the engine block, head, radiator, and heater
core. Thermostat begins to open at approximately 82 C (180 F) and
reaches full open near 95 C (203 F).
Total cooling system capacity is generally 6.5 to 7.0 liters (6.9 to 7.4
US quarts). Radiator cap pressure ranges from 88 to 108 kPa. A 50/50
ethylene glycol and distilled water mixture is recommended. Coolant
replacement interval is every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The engine uses a sealed airbox with a dry paper element, intake tubing,
and an aluminum intake manifold tuned for mid-range torque. Air filter
replacement is recommended every 20,000 km (12,400 miles).
Exhaust gases exit through a cast-iron exhaust manifold, flow into a
catalytic converter for emissions reduction, and pass through resonators
and mufflers. Oxygen sensors provide closed-loop control of air-fuel
ratio.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is managed by a distributor-based system or distributorless
coil-pack design depending on production year and region. Spark plugs
include NGK or Denso equivalents with a gap of 1.1 mm (0.043 inches).
Replacement intervals range from 20,000 to 60,000 km depending on plug
type. The alternator produces approximately 80 to 100 amperes. The
starter motor is a reduction-gear type. System voltage is 12 volts.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
The F23Z5 uses a rubber timing belt to coordinate camshaft and
crankshaft rotation. Replacement is recommended at 90,000 to 100,000 km
(56,000 to 62,000 miles). Belt tension is maintained by a spring-loaded
tensioner. Proper synchronization requires accurate alignment of timing
marks.

The F23Z5 was used in certain Honda Accord models and regional variants
during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was selected for smooth torque
