General Technical Data
The Honda D15B3 is a 1.5-liter inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine that belongs to Honda's D-series family. Produced during the early 1990s, it powered various Honda Civic models in European and select global markets. The engine emphasizes fuel efficiency, smooth operation, moderate torque, and long-term reliability.
Its cast-iron block ensures structural
rigidity, while the aluminum cylinder head provides effective thermal
control. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, contributing to balanced running
characteristics. Although not a high-performance variant, the D15B3 is
respected for its durability, low operating cost, ease of maintenance,
and consistent performance over extended service life.
Displacement is 1493 cc (1.493 liters / 91.1 cubic inches). Bore is 75.0
mm (2.95 inches) and stroke is 84.5 mm (3.33 inches), creating an
undersquare layout that favors torque in low and mid RPM ranges.
Compression ratio averages about 9.2 to 1. Maximum output is
approximately 90 to 95 horsepower (67 to 71 kW / 91 to 96 PS) at around
5500 rpm.
Peak torque is approximately 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) at about 4000 rpm. Idle speed is typically 700 to 750 rpm. The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings for optimal rotational stability. Lightweight aluminum pistons use a three-ring configuration for sealing and oil control.
Forged connecting rods provide strength under continuous operation. The aluminum head houses a single overhead camshaft actuating sixteen valves via rocker arms. A reinforced timing belt synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft rotation.
Fuel System
The D15B3 uses multi-point fuel injection controlled by an electronic engine control unit. An in-tank electric fuel pump delivers fuel through a fine-element filter to the fuel rail, supplying four solenoid injectors. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 270 to 300 kPa (39 to 44 lbs per square inch).
Sensor feedback from the manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle position sensor, intake air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, and engine coolant temperature sensor determines injection timing and duration. The throttle body is cable-operated and incorporates idle air control components. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 AKI (91 to 92 RON).
Lubrication System
Lubrication is provided by a full-pressure wet-sump system using a crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump. Oil is drawn through a pickup strainer and pushed through a spin-on full-flow filter before circulating to the crankshaft bearings, rod journals, camshaft journals, and rocker mechanisms.
Oil capacity including filter is approximately 3.5 to 3.7 liters (3.7 to 3.9 US quarts). Recommended viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on environmental conditions. Normal operating oil pressure is roughly 300 to 400 kPa (44 to 58 psi). The PCV system assists in crankcase ventilation and reduces oil contamination.
Cooling System
The cooling system is liquid-cooled and uses a belt-driven centrifugal water pump to circulate coolant through the block, head, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat opening temperature is approximately 82 C (180 degrees F) and full open is achieved near 95 C (203 degrees F).
System capacity ranges from 4.8 to 5.3 liters (5.1 to 5.6 US quarts). Radiator cap pressure ranges from 88 to 108 kPa. A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water is recommended. Coolant service interval is every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system includes a sealed airbox, dry paper air filter, intake ducting, and an aluminum intake manifold designed for stable mid-range torque. The air filter is replaced every 20,000 km (12,400 miles).
Exhaust gases flow from a cast-iron exhaust manifold into the catalytic converter and then through resonators and mufflers. Oxygen sensors regulate air-fuel mixture during closed-loop operation.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is managed by a distributor assembly mounted to the cylinder head and driven by the camshaft. The unit houses the ignition coil, pickup components, and mechanical advance elements. Spark plug specifications generally include NGK or Denso types with a gap of 1.1 mm (0.043 inches).
Replacement is recommended every 20,000 to 40,000 km depending on plug material. The alternator output ranges from 70 to 80 amperes. The starter motor is a reduction-gear type. The electrical system operates at 12 volts.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
A toothed rubber timing belt synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft operation. Replacement interval is 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles). Belt tension is controlled by a spring-loaded tensioner. Accurate alignment requires matching timing marks on both pulleys. The engine is generally non-interference, but timely belt replacement is recommended.
Dimensions and Weight
Length is approximately 580 to 600 mm (22.8 to 23.6 inches). Width ranges from 620 to 640 mm (24.4 to 25.2 inches). Height is approximately 660 to 680 mm (26.0 to 26.8 inches). Dry weight ranges from 95 to 110 kg (209 to 243 lbs).
