The Honda B18B engine is a member of Honda’s
famous B-series lineup, known worldwide for its reliability, efficiency,
and engineering refinement. Unlike the high-revving VTEC-equipped B16A,
B18C1, and B18C5 engines, the B18B represents the non-VTEC,
torque-oriented side of the B-series family. This engine was used
extensively in Honda and Acura vehicles during the 1990s and early
2000s, powering models in various global markets including the Honda
Integra, Honda Orthia, Honda Partner, and certain regional variants of
the Honda CR-V.
Designed to deliver strong low- and mid-range torque rather than peak
high-rpm performance, the B18B engine uses a long-stroke bottom-end,
conservative camshaft profiles, and a robust cast-iron block. It
provides excellent drivability in both urban and highway environments,
offering a smooth, predictable powerband. The engine is extremely
durable, often capable of enduring high mileage with minimal internal
wear when properly maintained.
The B18B is renowned not only for its reliability but also for its
tunability. Owing to its strong bottom-end construction, it is a popular
choice for budget turbocharging builds and non-VTEC performance
configurations. For factory applications, however, it prioritizes
smoothness, efficiency, and longevity, which made it a favorite for
daily-driven vehicles requiring dependable performance in all
conditions.
The Honda B18B is a four-stroke, inline-four gasoline engine with dual
overhead camshafts (DOHC) and 16 valves. Displacement is 1,834 cc (111.9
cubic inches), achieved through an 81.0 mm (3.19 in) bore and an 89.0 mm
(3.50 in) stroke. This long-stroke design improves torque
characteristics while maintaining stable high-rpm operation typical of
Honda DOHC engines.
Compression ratio varies slightly between versions but is generally
around 9.2:1. This moderate compression supports combustion stability on
regular unleaded gasoline while maintaining good efficiency.
Factory-rated output:
- Power: 140 horsepower (104 kW) at 6,300 rpm
- Torque: 127 lb-ft (172 Nm) at around 4,800–5,200 rpm
Idle speed: approx. 700–750 rpm
Redline: approx. 6,800 rpm
Fuel cut: approx. 7,000 rpm
Firing order: 1-3-4-2
The engine block is cast iron with integrated cast-in cylinder liners
for long-term wear resistance. A forged-steel crankshaft supported by
five main bearings provides exceptional rotational stability. The
connecting rods are forged steel, and the pistons are lightweight cast
aluminum with friction-reducing skirt coatings to improve longevity and
reduce noise.
The aluminum alloy DOHC cylinder head features a crossflow layout with
four valves per cylinder-two intake and two exhaust.
Valve diameters
are approximately:
- Intake valves: 33 mm (1.30 in)
- Exhaust valves: 28 mm (1.10 in)
The valvetrain uses shim-over-bucket mechanical lifters, which ensure
stability at high rpm and require periodic clearance inspection. The
non-VTEC camshaft profiles prioritize torque, drivability, and fuel
economy while still allowing the engine to breathe adequately at higher
rpm.
The combustion chamber is a pent-roof design that promotes efficient
mixture motion and rapid flame propagation, reducing the likelihood of
detonation and improving emissions performance.
The B18B uses Honda’s PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) multi-point
system. Fuel is supplied by an in-tank electric pump, passes through a
high-efficiency paper-element filter, and enters the fuel rail.
Fuel pressure: approx. 43–47 psi (300–325 kPa), controlled by a
vacuum-referenced regulator. Excess fuel returns to the tank to maintain
stable pressure.
Sensors feeding data to the ECU include:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Primary oxygen sensor
- Atmospheric pressure sensor
- Crank and cam position pickups inside the distributor
The ECU adjusts injector pulse width and ignition timing to maintain
proper combustion under all load conditions. The engine is designed to
run on regular 87 AKI (91 RON) gasoline, though higher octane fuels may
improve high-load operation.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design. A
crank-driven trochoid oil pump draws oil through a pickup screen,
pressurizes it, and routes it through a spin-on oil filter before
distributing it to engine bearings and valvetrain components.
Oil capacity: approx. 4.0 liters (4.2 US quarts)
Recommended viscosity: 5W-30 or 10W-30; 10W-40 may be used in hot
climates
Running oil pressure: 50–70 psi (345–480 kPa)
Idle oil pressure: above 10 psi (69 kPa)
The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system maintains stable
crankcase pressures and reduces oil contamination.
Cooling is provided by a liquid-based system with a belt-driven
centrifugal water pump.
Thermostat:
- Begins opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
Cooling system capacity: approx. 5.5–6.0 liters (5.8–6.3 US quarts)
Radiator cap pressure: approx. 1.1 bar (16 psi)
Coolant flows through the block, head, radiator, and heater core. An
electric radiator fan is controlled by a thermal switch or ECU depending
on model year.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The aluminum intake manifold is tuned for low- and mid-range torque.
Runner lengths optimize airflow velocity at common driving speeds.
Throttle body diameter typically ranges from 58–60 mm.
Air is filtered through a resonated airbox with a dry paper element. The
exhaust manifold is cast iron for durability.
Exhaust flows through:
- Primary oxygen sensor
- Catalytic converter
- Resonator
- Muffler
The exhaust system is designed to balance emissions compliance with
smooth exhaust flow.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is managed electronically with a distributor-based system.
Components include:
- Internal ignition coil
- Igniter module
- Crank and cam position sensors (inside distributor)
The ECU dynamically controls spark advance based on load, rpm, coolant
temperature, and throttle position.
Spark plugs: NGK BKR6E-11 or equivalent
Gap: 1.0–1.1 mm (0.039–0.043 in)
Base timing is adjustable by rotating the distributor with the ECU
placed into timing-set mode by bridging the service connector.
Electrical system voltage: 12 V
Alternator output: approx. 70–80 A
Starter: reduction-gear type
Ground straps between the block, chassis, and battery ensure ECU
stability and proper sensor operation.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The camshafts are driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt. The belt
also drives the water pump. Timing belt service interval: 90,000–100,000
km (55,000–62,000 miles).
Valve actuation uses shim-over-bucket lifters, requiring periodic
clearance checks. Timing marks are cast into the cam sprockets and crank
pulley for service alignment.
- Length: 620 mm (24.4 in)
- Width: 570 mm (22.4 in)
- Height: 660 mm (26.0 in)
