The Toyota 3GR-FSE is a 3.0-liter, 60-degree V6
gasoline engine belonging to the GR family, a series of powerplants introduced
in the early 2000s to replace the venerable JZ and MZ engine lineages. Developed
specifically for rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans in the Japanese Domestic Market,
the 3GR-FSE represented Toyota’s commitment to high thermal efficiency and
refined power delivery. It was among the first Toyota V6 engines to incorporate
D-4 direct injection technology, a system that enabled a higher compression
ratio and improved fuel economy without sacrificing power output.
The 3GR-FSE is characterized by its all-aluminum construction - cylinder block
and cylinder heads - dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with Dual VVT-i (Variable
Valve Timing with intelligence) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, and a
direct injection fuel system. Unlike the D-4S system used in other GR engines,
the 3GR-FSE employs D-4 direct injection exclusively, with fuel injectors
mounted directly in the cylinder heads.
The engine incorporates a variable-length intake manifold (ACIS) and a
maintenance-free timing chain system. Its 11.5:1 compression ratio, made
possible by direct injection, allowed the 3GR-FSE to achieve a combination of
power and efficiency well-suited to Toyota’s premium rear-wheel-drive sedans and
Lexus models of the mid-2000s.
The 3GR-FSE is a four-stroke, water-cooled, naturally aspirated V6 gasoline
engine configured for longitudinal mounting in rear-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. Its 60-degree bank angle provides inherent primary balance and
smooth operation.
Engine Type: 60° V6, 4-cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated
Displacement: 2,994 cc (182.7 cu.in)
Bore and Stroke: 87.5 mm (3.44 in) x 83.0 mm (3.27 in)
Compression Ratio: 11.5:1
Valvetrain: DOHC, 24-valve (4 valves per cylinder) with chain drive
Valve Timing: Dual VVT-i (intake and exhaust)
Fuel System: D-4 direct injection
Intake System: ACIS variable-length intake manifold
Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6
Redline: 6,500 rpm
Maximum Power: 188 kW (255 hp) at 6,200 rpm
Maximum Torque: 314 Nm (232 lb-ft) at 3,600 rpm
The cylinder block is manufactured from aluminum alloy
using a high-pressure die-casting process, a material selection that reduces
overall engine mass and aids in heat dissipation. The block features a 60-degree
V-angle and an open-deck design, where the cylinder bores are supported at the
top only by the water jacket perimeter, enhancing cooling efficiency.
Pressed-in, cast iron cylinder liners are used to provide a durable,
low-friction running surface for the pistons.
The block incorporates a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft
centerline, with a structural aluminum ladder frame - a bedplate - bolted to the
lower crankcase to support the crankshaft main bearings and enhance bottom-end
rigidity. The bedplate design incorporates main bearing caps integrated into the
structure. The block is configured for longitudinal mounting with engine mount
brackets positioned for rear-wheel-drive vehicle architectures.
Block Material: Aluminum alloy
Liner Type: Pressed-in cast iron liners
Bore Diameter: 87.5 mm (3.44 in)
Main Bearing Configuration: Integrated bedplate with four main bearings
The cylinder heads are constructed from aluminum alloy, with separate castings
for each cylinder bank. Each head utilizes a DOHC valvetrain with four valves
per cylinder - two intake and two exhaust - actuated by bucket-type tappets. The
camshafts are driven by a silent-type roller chain from the crankshaft, with an
automatic hydraulic tensioner maintaining optimal chain tension. Hydraulic lash
adjusters are integrated into the valvetrain, automatically maintaining zero
valve clearance throughout the engine’s operational life, eliminating the need
for periodic manual valve adjustments.
A defining feature of the 3GR-FSE is the Dual VVT-i system, which operates on
both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Oil-pressure-actuated phasers are mounted
at the front of each camshaft, allowing continuous adjustment of valve timing
across a range of 40 degrees for the intake camshaft and 45 degrees for the
exhaust camshaft. This system optimizes valve overlap for low-end torque,
high-rpm power, idle stability, and fuel economy. The combustion chambers are of
a pent-roof design with centrally located direct fuel injectors and spark plugs.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and
hydraulic lash adjusters.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 34.0 mm (1.34 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 29.0 mm (1.14 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
Dual VVT-i Range (Intake): 0-40 degrees (crankshaft angle).
Dual VVT-i Range (Exhaust): 0-45 degrees (crankshaft angle).
The 3GR-FSE employs a D-4S direct injection fuel
system, with fuel injectors mounted directly in the cylinder heads. A
high-pressure fuel pump, driven by a cam lobe on the intake camshaft, draws fuel
from the tank and delivers it to a common rail mounted on the engine. The system
operates at pressures up to 13.0 MPa (1,885 psi), enabling precise fuel metering
and improved charge cooling. Six solenoid-actuated fuel injectors, one per
cylinder, are positioned to inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
The direct injection system allows for a stratified charge operation under
certain conditions, improving fuel efficiency, and enables multiple injection
events per combustion cycle to reduce combustion noise and improve cold-start
performance. The high compression ratio of 11.5:1 is made possible by the
cooling effect of the directly injected fuel, which reduces the tendency for
detonation. The engine control unit (ECU) calculates injection parameters based
on input from the mass airflow sensors, throttle position sensor, coolant
temperature sensor, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensors, fuel
rail pressure sensor, and oxygen sensor feedback.
Injection Type: D-4 direct injection
Maximum Injection Pressure: 13.0 MPa (1,885 psi)
High-Pressure Pump: Single-piston, cam-driven
Injector Type: Solenoid-actuated, multi-hole nozzle
Fuel Requirement: 91 octane or higher (premium unleaded recommended)
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from a cast aluminum oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
hydraulic lash adjusters, Dual VVT-i phasers, and timing chain tensioners.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits. The oil pan incorporates a windage tray to reduce oil
aeration at high engine speeds. A water-cooled oil cooler is integrated into the
oil filter housing to stabilize oil temperature under sustained high-load
operation.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 (API SL, SM, or higher)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 6.3 liters (6.7 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at idle): 98 kPa (14.2 psi) minimum
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-392 kPa (42.6-56.9 psi)
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design engineered to manage the thermal load of a high-compression V6 engine. A
high-efficiency cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan
provides cooling capacity. A centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing
chain, circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder heads, and heater
core.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm rapidly. The
system is designed to provide uniform cooling across both cylinder banks,
maintaining consistent thermal expansion across the aluminum block and head
interface.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors
Coolant Capacity: 8.5-9.5 liters (9.0-10.0 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-86 °C (180-187 °F)
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 95 °C (203 °F)
Radiator Cap Pressure: 108-127 kPa (15.7-18.4 psi)
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing chain-driven
Ignition System: Distributorless ignition system with
six individual pencil-type ignition coils, each mounted directly over a spark
plug (coil-on-plug). The ECU controls ignition timing based on crankshaft
position, camshaft position, knock sensor feedback, and engine load. Dual knock
sensors - one per cylinder bank - allow the ECU to retard ignition timing under
detonation conditions on individual banks.
Intake System: Air is drawn through a dry-type paper element air filter and a
hot-wire mass airflow sensor before entering the throttle body. The ACIS
(Acoustic Control Induction System) variable-length intake manifold adjusts the
effective length of the intake runners to optimize volumetric efficiency across
the engine speed range. The system uses a vacuum-actuated butterfly valve to
switch between long runners for low-end torque and short runners for high-rpm
power.
Exhaust System: Stainless steel exhaust manifolds from each cylinder bank merge
into a Y-pipe configuration before entering a catalytic converter. Heated oxygen
sensors are mounted upstream and downstream of the catalytic converters for fuel
trim feedback and catalyst efficiency monitoring.
Timing Drive: A silent-type roller chain serves as the primary timing drive,
connecting the crankshaft sprocket to the intake camshaft sprockets. Secondary
chains connect the intake and exhaust camshafts on each cylinder bank. Automatic
hydraulic tensioners maintain optimal chain tension throughout the engine’s
operational life. The chain system is designed for the engine’s service life
without replacement under normal operating conditions.
