The Mitsubishi 4D65 is a 1.8-liter, inline-four diesel
engine belonging to the Sirius family of powerplants, a series specifically
developed for transverse installation in front-wheel-drive passenger cars.
Introduced in the early 1980s, the 4D65 represented Mitsubishi’s effort to bring
diesel refinement and fuel efficiency to compact and mid-size sedans,
hatchbacks, and multi-purpose vehicles, offering a smoother and more compact
alternative to the larger 4D5-series engines used in commercial applications.
The engine was produced throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, serving
as a diesel option across a broad range of Mitsubishi models.
The 4D65 is characterized by its cast iron cylinder block, a belt-driven single
overhead camshaft (SOHC) valvetrain with two valves per cylinder, and an
indirect injection (IDI) combustion system using swirl chambers. A defining
feature of this engine - uncommon for small-displacement diesel engines of its
era - is the incorporation of twin balance shafts, marketed by Mitsubishi as the
Silent Shaft system.
These shafts significantly reduced the second-order vibrations inherent to
inline-four engines, contributing to a level of refinement that made the diesel
option competitive with petrol counterparts. The engine was offered in both
naturally aspirated and turbocharged (4D65T) configurations, with the
turbocharged variant providing enhanced power and torque for heavier vehicle
applications.
The 4D65 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, naturally aspirated or turbocharged
diesel engine configured for transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. Its compact dimensions and balance shaft system were engineered
to provide diesel efficiency without compromising passenger comfort.

The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength
cast iron, a material selected for its rigidity, wear resistance, and
vibration-damping properties essential for diesel engine durability. The block
features a deep-skirt design, with the cylinder walls extending below the
crankshaft centerline to provide robust support for the main bearing caps and to
minimize vibration transmission to the vehicle chassis. An open-deck
configuration is employed, where the cylinder bores are supported at the top by
the water jacket perimeter, aiding in cooling efficiency.
Pressed-in, replaceable cast iron cylinder liners are used, allowing for engine
rebuilding through liner replacement. A distinctive feature of the 4D65 block is
the integration of the Silent Shaft balance shaft system. Two balance shafts are
housed within the block, rotating at twice engine speed and phased to counteract
the second-order vibrations inherent to inline-four engines. These shafts are
driven by a separate toothed belt from the crankshaft. The block incorporates
five main bearing webs with two-bolt main bearing caps.
Block Material: Cast iron
Liner Type: Replaceable, pressed-in cast iron liners
Bore Diameter: 80.6 mm (3.17 in)
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, two-bolt design
Balance Shafts: Twin Silent Shaft system, belt-driven
The cylinder head is constructed from cast iron,
matching the thermal expansion characteristics of the block to ensure reliable
head gasket sealing across the diesel operating temperature range. The head
utilizes a cross-flow design with the intake manifold on the rear side and the
exhaust manifold on the front side, optimized for transverse engine
installation. The combustion system employs indirect injection (IDI) with
individual swirl chambers - pre-combustion chambers - for each cylinder, formed
by steel inserts pressed into the cylinder head. These chambers provide a highly
turbulent environment for fuel-air mixing before combustion propagates into the
main cylinder, enabling smoother, quieter diesel operation at the cost of
slightly reduced thermal efficiency.
The SOHC valvetrain operates eight valves - two per cylinder - via roller rocker
arms. The camshaft is driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt from the
crankshaft, with an automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintaining belt tension.
Valve clearance is set manually using adjustment screws on the rocker arms, a
system requiring periodic maintenance. The intake and exhaust valves are
arranged in a parallel configuration within the cylinder head.
Head Material: Cast iron
Combustion Chamber Type: Indirect injection with steel swirl chamber inserts
Valve Configuration: SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder with roller rocker arms
Valve Diameter (Intake): 34.0 mm (1.34 in)

Valve Stem Diameter: 8.0 mm (0.31 in)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
Glow Plug Type: Sheathed type, pencil-style heating element
The 4D65 employs a mechanical indirect injection fuel
system. A Bosch VE-type or Zexel equivalent rotary distribution injection pump
is mounted on the side of the cylinder block and driven by the timing belt. The
injection pump performs three functions: generating injection pressure, metering
the precise quantity of fuel, and distributing fuel to each cylinder in the
correct firing order. The pump incorporates a mechanical governor that regulates
fuel delivery based on engine speed and load, as well as a cold-start device
that advances injection timing when the engine is cold.
High-pressure steel injection lines connect the pump to nozzle-type injectors
mounted in the cylinder head. Each injector sprays fuel into the swirl chamber,
where atomization occurs. A manual primer pump is integrated into the fuel
system to facilitate bleeding air after filter changes or fuel system service. A
fuel filter with an integrated water separator is mounted in the fuel supply
line.
Injection Type: Mechanical indirect injection
Injection Pump: Rotary distribution pump (Bosch VE or Zexel equivalent)
Injection Timing: 6-8 degrees before top dead center (dynamic)
Injection Pressure (nozzle opening): 10.8-12.8 MPa (1,566-1,856 psi)
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel with minimum cetane number of 45
Fuel Filter: Replaceable cartridge type with integrated water separator
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from a stamped steel oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
rocker arm assemblies, and balance shaft bearings.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits to prevent over-pressurization during cold starts. The
oil pan incorporates internal baffles to maintain oil pickup during cornering
and acceleration. The system is designed to provide adequate lubrication across
the engine’s operating temperature range.
Oil Type: Diesel-rated SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 (API CC, CD, or higher)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 5.1-5.6 liters (5.4-5.9 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-392 kPa (42.6-56.9 psi)
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design employing a cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan on
passenger car applications. A centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing
belt, circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and heater
core. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal
operating temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm
rapidly by circulating coolant only within the engine until the thermostat
opens.
The system is designed to provide uniform cooling across all four cylinders,
maintaining consistent thermal expansion across the cast iron block and head
interface. A coolant recovery tank is integrated to maintain system pressure and
prevent coolant loss.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors
Coolant Capacity: 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.9 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 76-82 °C (169-180 °F)
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 90 °C (194 °F)
Radiator Cap Pressure: 88-108 kPa (12.8-15.7 psi)
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven
Intake System: Air is drawn through a dry-type paper
element air filter before entering the intake manifold. The turbocharged 4D65T
variant incorporates a single-scroll turbocharger mounted on the exhaust
manifold, with a small air-to-air intercooler on certain applications.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with individual runners. The
turbocharged variant features an integrated turbocharger mounting flange.
Timing Drive: A reinforced rubber timing belt with integral teeth drives the
camshaft and, on the 4D65T, the injection pump. An automatic spring-loaded
tensioner maintains belt tension. A separate toothed belt drives the balance
shafts from the crankshaft. The engine is of interference design; timing belt
failure results in valve-to-piston contact.
