The Volvo B5244S2 is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated
inline 5-cylinder petrol engine from the modular Whiteblock family, produced
between 1999 and 2010. This engine shares its mechanical architecture with the
higher-output B5244S but was electronically detuned by Volvo to deliver reduced
power output, positioning it as an entry-level powertrain for mid-sized luxury
vehicles in markets where taxation, insurance premiums, or fuel economy
considerations favored lower power figures.
Constructed entirely from aluminum alloys, the B5244S2 utilized dual overhead
camshafts with variable valve timing on the intake side, Bosch Motronic ME7
engine management with electronic throttle control, and a belt-driven
valvetrain. Its naturally aspirated configuration and detuned state contributed
to reduced mechanical stress compared to forced-induction Whiteblock variants,
earning a reputation for longevity and reliability across Volvo’s P2 and P1
platform vehicles.

The cylinder block is manufactured from cast aluminum
alloy with cast iron cylinder liners pressed into the parent material to provide
a durable wear surface for the piston rings. The block features a closed-deck
design at the cylinder head interface to enhance rigidity and head gasket
sealing under varying thermal loads. Five main bearings support the forged steel
crankshaft, with the center main bearing incorporating thrust washers to control
crankshaft end float.
The block incorporates a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft
centerline, with a structural aluminum oil pan that bolts to the lower block
face to increase overall powertrain stiffness. Water jackets are cast with
optimized coolant flow paths surrounding each of the five cylinder bores. The
block includes an integral oil filter mounting boss on the rearward face and a
crankshaft position sensor mounting boss at the transmission interface. Balance
shafts are not incorporated in this naturally aspirated configuration,
contributing to reduced rotational mass.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum
alloy with a pent-roof combustion chamber design incorporating four valves per
cylinder. Intake valves measure 33.0 mm (1.30 in) in diameter, while exhaust
valves measure 29.0 mm (1.14 in).
Valve stems are 6.0 mm (0.24 in) in diameter with a nitride-hardened surface
treatment on intake valves and a stellite-faced exhaust valve for
high-temperature durability. The valvetrain utilizes low-friction roller finger
followers with hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating manual valve clearance
adjustments throughout the engine service life. The intake camshaft is equipped
with a continuously variable valve timing phaser, with a total adjustment range
of 40 degrees of crank angle.
The exhaust camshaft operates on a fixed timing without variable valve timing.
Camshaft bearing caps are machined integrally with the cylinder head structure
and are not interchangeable between positions. The cylinder head incorporates
integrated coolant passages directing flow around the combustion chambers and
exhaust ports.
The fuel system utilizes a sequential multi-point fuel
injection configuration managed by a Bosch Motronic ME7 engine management
system. Fuel is delivered by an in-tank electric pump operating at a regulated
pressure of 3.8 bar (55.1 psi). Five top-feed fuel injectors are mounted in the
intake manifold runners, each with a four-hole nozzle configuration to optimize
fuel atomization.
The intake manifold is constructed from composite plastic and incorporates a
variable-length intake runner system actuated by a solenoid-controlled
diaphragm, optimizing airflow across the engine speed range. An electronic
throttle body (drive-by-wire) with a 70 mm (2.76 in) bore diameter eliminates
the mechanical cable linkage, enabling integrated engine torque management,
cruise control, and traction control functions. The fuel system operates as a
returnless design to reduce evaporative emissions, with fuel pressure regulation
integrated into the fuel pump module.
The lubrication system is a wet-sump configuration
utilizing a rotor-type oil pump mounted on the front of the crankshaft, driven
directly by a keyed drive sleeve. The pump draws oil through a fixed mesh pickup
screen located in the aluminum oil pan and delivers it through a full-flow
spin-on oil filter mounted on the rear of the cylinder block. System capacity
with filter replacement is 5.8 liters (6.1 qt). The oil pan incorporates windage
trays and baffles to maintain oil pickup during cornering and braking maneuvers.
Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40 meeting ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4
specifications. Oil pressure at operating temperature at 2000 rpm is maintained
between 2.5-4.5 bar (36.3-65.3 psi), while idle pressure is maintained at a
minimum of 0.8 bar (11.6 psi). A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil
pump housing limits maximum system pressure to 5.0 bar (72.5 psi). Piston
cooling jets are integrated into the cylinder block structure, providing
continuous oil spray to the underside of each piston crown.
The cooling system operates under pressure with a
sealed expansion tank and a radiator cap rated at 1.2 bar (17.4 psi). Coolant
circulation is driven by a centrifugal water pump mounted on the front of the
cylinder block, driven by the timing belt through a dedicated pulley. System
total capacity is 7.2 liters (7.6 qt). A wax-pellet thermostat is housed in a
plastic assembly at the water pump inlet, commencing opening at 87°C (189°F) and
reaching full open at 102°C (216°F).
An electric cooling fan is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) based
on coolant temperature, air conditioning pressure, and vehicle speed. Coolant
specified is ethylene glycol-based, meeting Volvo requirements for extended-life
formulations. The cylinder block incorporates full-length water jackets
surrounding each cylinder, with coolant directed from the block to the cylinder
head through passages aligned with the head gasket.
Ignition System: Direct ignition system with individual
pencil-type ignition coils mounted over each spark plug. The ECM controls
ignition timing based on crankshaft position, camshaft position, knock sensor
feedback, and engine load. Spark plugs are platinum-tipped with a specified gap
of 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 in).
Exhaust System: A stainless steel exhaust manifold routes to a single downpipe
incorporating a close-coupled three-way catalytic converter. The system utilizes
two heated oxygen sensors positioned before and after the catalyst for
closed-loop fuel control and catalyst monitoring.
Intake System: A sound-insulated air cleaner housing with a pleated paper filter
element feeds a dual-path intake duct. The system incorporates an air mass flow
sensor for precise fuel delivery calculation.
Emission Control: Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system with an oil trap
and calibrated orifice, requiring periodic cleaning to prevent clogging.
Evaporative emissions system with a charcoal canister and purge solenoid valve.
Engine Management: The Bosch Motronic ME7 ECM controls fuel injection, ignition
timing, VVT actuation, electronic throttle, idle speed control, and diagnostic
functions. The system utilizes a CAN-bus network for communication with other
vehicle systems.
